Can't go to an EU country - where else for August?

LittleGreyFluffyCat · 26/04/2022 16:58

I was planning to start researching and book a holiday in the South of France. Eldest DC just told me today that won't work for him, because he's already had his 90 days in Europe (gap year activities).

Brexit rules mean he can't go back into the EU "After Brexit, you can stay in the EU, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland without a visa for up to 90 days in a 180-day period."

I'm feeling stuck now! Anyone got any ideas? Ideal criteria:

  • Not so hot you can't do anything

  • Shortest flight possible (I hate flying)

  • Not super-expensive luxury prices, as budget as possible for non EU

@Bunnyfuller Yrs, I absolutely love this😂

Christ the amount of ignorance amongst the average Brit about what brexit travel restrictions would mean is staggering!
no wonder we have these gangsters in power!
Thank fuck I have duel citizenship!

You do know, they'll just all blame the EU for 'punishing them' though, not the liars who sold them Brexit without even knowing where Dover was themselves.

Justkeeppedaling · 27/04/2022 09:15

Morocco is nice.
Or closer to home, the Isle of Wight

Daisylo0 · 27/04/2022 09:17

Yes definitely . always somebody else’s fault. The few brexiteers I had the misfortune to know all seemed to have a persecution complex as well😀

Still waiting for a tangible positive from Brexit, anyone?

How about having a blue passport?

Admittedly there are restrictions on using the blue passport such as the 90 days in a 180 day period, no longer the freedom to easily work in the EU and having to stay in the long "Non EU" queue at airports etc.

BUT all this is easily outweighed by the benefit of having a blue passport!

Bunnyfuller · 27/04/2022 09:30

My Brexit-voting boss even sheepishly said ‘yes, but the bananas’ last week. My parents who also voted for it now say they wish they hadn’t as ‘didn’t realise’…

why fucking vote if you don’t know?!

We are looking to retire to Cyprus, so much more complicated now. The sooner I can get away from this small-minded, bigoted and ignorant country, the better.

Apricote · 27/04/2022 09:34

Amazed people don't know about the common travel area with Ireland. British people can go live there without a visa or EU citizenship, let alone go for a holiday.

Apricote · 27/04/2022 09:38

p.s if I was in this position I would do eastern Canada though it doesn't fulfil all your requirements - but not much else closer appeals to me (that would be easyish to get visa/ esta etc.)

100% this.

I am an immigrant to the UK though have a British passport now. The passport for my birth country doesn't really grant you travel anywhere without a visa, which is a hugely time consuming and costly process. I was absolutely staggered when Brits voted to voluntarily deny themselves the chance to work, live or travel - visa-free - to 27 countries! To me it spoke of breath-taking ignorance about the absolute privilege of having a British passport.

I’m not amazed by anything any more about this country!. The education system has a lot to answer for!

And who was the Tory brexit supporter MP who was astonished to learn he couldn't just get an Irish passport, as a Brit, without Irish heritage?

BigWoollyJumpers · 27/04/2022 11:30

So, I removed my earlier post re: Croatia as it wasn't clear. Although Croatia is in the EU, and Schengen, they do have their own visa rules, and any stay there actually doesn't count towards your 90 entitlement elsewhere in Europe.

This from the "visit Croatia" website: British travellers could spend 90 days in Croatia and then still spend another 90 days in the Schengen Zone. And, technically, you could then return to Croatia for another 90 days, and then back to the Schengen Zone for another 90 days…

LetitiaLeghorn · 27/04/2022 13:46

I don't believe Croatia is in the Schengen zone yet, which is why it has different visa rules. It's due to join but no date given as yet, and then it too will follow the Schengen area rules so you won't be able to visit for 90 days regardless of which other eu countries you've visited.

Neverreturntoathread · 27/04/2022 13:49

Can’t he just apply for a visa?

Or Croatia is lovely and some upthread said that’s got different rules.

Norway isnt in the EU and is bloody beautiful. Although not keen on the brown cheese.

Norway is wonderful, the people are friendly and the scenery (particularly in fjord country) is stunning. Agree with you on the soapy brown cheese though!

How well do you know Cyprus?

Discovereads · 26/04/2022 17:12

Yes Ireland is in the EU. But could stay in U.K. and go to Northern Ireland.

other European countries not in EU are:
Albania
Montenegro
Lichtenstein
Andorra
Armenia
Monaco
San Marino
Serbia
Vatican
North Macedonia

Obviously geography is not your strong point - you can't get to most of those without going through the EU! Vatican, San Marino, Lichtenstein, Andorra and Moanco definitely require flights into an EU country as they don't have airports!

Canary islands are not in EU and the breeze factor makes it cooler than mainland

Why do you think they aren't in the EU? They're part of Spain Confused

LetitiaLeghorn · 27/04/2022 14:10

If not the Canaries, how about Cape Verde?

Lochroy · 27/04/2022 14:20

hupfpferd · 26/04/2022 20:38

I travelled into Spain on my UK passport and they stamped it.
I left on my EU passport to see whether it would flag up and it didn't.
According to my UK passport I am still in Spain from what people on here are saying.

Do they really stamp your passport in and out each time?

Regardless or not of if you get a physical stamp (and certainly I've been stamped in and out of Spain twice now) what counts is when they scan your passport into their computer.

It will be interesting to see what happens the next time you try and use your UK passport there...

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 27/04/2022 16:31

Imagining the poster with duel citizenship taking pistols whenever they travel.

Do you mean they can or they can’t?

Boosterquery · 27/04/2022 22:56

For those querying whether the authorities ever check whether you have exceeded your 90 day Schengen allowance, yes they do! SIL frequently travels to EU countries for work, so accumulates a lot of passport stamps. She recently had an occasion where the passport officer spent over 10 minutes carefully working through the stamps to make sure she hadn't exceeded her allowance.

Don't know why so many people are surprised that loss of freedom of movement works both ways. 😒
