Do You realistically expect to be going abroad in 2021?

Having missed out on a holiday abroad in 2020 I'm thinking about what will be possible in 2021. I'm scheduled for my vaccination in about April 2021 bit despite this its going to depend a lot on the country you're intending to visit.

So with vaccines, self quarantine and pre holiday testing do people think they will be going abroad this year?

No

Tbh I am unsure whether our plans to go abroad in 2022 are unrealistic

badpuma · 04/01/2021 15:07

Yes. We cancelled our 2020 holiday but know loads of people who went abroad and had a lovely time. This year will be better as a fair few will be vaccinated and a lot of the things which were trialled last year (masks etc) are now absolutely standard.

I'd check the refund/ payment options carefully so we could cancel late in the day if it isn't going to work, but expect that it will.

passthemustard · 04/01/2021 15:08

I booked a holiday in Spain for the beginning of June 2021 back in the autumn when things were looking up. I really really hope we can go. But I won't be surprised if we can't.

Namechangeme87 · 04/01/2021 15:12

No I prob just won’t see my family for another year . 👍

FrostedCranberries · 04/01/2021 15:12

I think things will be fine Easter-Aug.

Dyrne · 04/01/2021 15:18

We’re not holding out too much hope - we’re setting our sights on a nice UK holiday sometime after Easter but we’ll also keep our eyes out for a potential last minute Europe trip if things look good.

For me it’s more 1) the guilt of potentially having spread things further; and 2) the worry about being caught out if the rules suddenly changed while I was away.

Kazzyhoward · 04/01/2021 15:27

@FrostedCranberries

I think things will be fine Easter-Aug.
Can I have some of whatever you've been drinking?
zafferana · 04/01/2021 15:29

My hope is that within six months (so by the summer), things will look very different than they do now, mainly due to vaccines. So yes, by the summer I am very much hoping that we'll be able to go abroad. It's one year today since we returned from our last trip overseas and I can't wait to go away .... so fingers firmly crossed.

wildraisins · 04/01/2021 15:45

Perhaps at the end of the year. Personally I wouldn't book anything before October.

movingonup20 · 04/01/2021 15:54

I'm optimistic about late summer but I'm not sure I would book before then. Ive got reservations for September

AuntieMarys · 04/01/2021 15:58

No. According to the vaccination calculator, it will be Sept to Nov before dh and I get vaccinated ( over 60, no health issues). And I bet you will need to be vaccinated to travel.

Aposterhasnoname · 04/01/2021 16:02

Yes, went in July last year and had a great time. I’m sure we’ll do the same this year.

Standrewsschool · 04/01/2021 16:02

No, although would love to. Don’t feel confident about travelling abroad.

lazylinguist · 04/01/2021 16:03

Nope. Planning to go abroad in 2022. I hadn't heard of the vaccination calculator - just checked and apparently I won't get it until February 2022!

LegoAndLolDolls · 04/01/2021 16:04

No unfortunately not now. I'm not hopeful my Easter or June uk holiday will go ahead now too.

Looking at the vaccination calculator even my 78 year old wont be vaccinated until the end of May.

So on that timeline the vaccine isnt going to made a dent before summer.

I want to book a UK break in October half term as that's looking more realistic now. Not sure what to do anymore. So far everything is being refunded ok. I feel like I'm booking to cancel but that's very risk and costs if UK. At the worse we dont go. It's not the same risks with being stranded or getting travel insurance abroad.

I'm going to wait for better days and maybe have a blow out trip in 2022

Bluegrass · 04/01/2021 16:05

No idea but I’ll be anxiously watching the clock run down on the voucher I got for cancelled flights during summer last year. At over £2k I really don’t want to lose that money if I can help it.

GlowingOrb · 04/01/2021 16:06

No, I think it’s irresponsible even if you are vaccinated. Until there is evidence vaccines reduce transmission, you are potentially endangering people who aren’t lucky enough to have gotten the vaccine yet.

plg21 · 04/01/2021 16:43

I've rebooked flights to Boston for July. They're airmiles flights so I can cancel up to 24 hours before. And some accommodation, also fully refundable. Even if we have to cancel again, it's a little beacon of hope to look forward to if things do improve by then.

We cancelled our group ski holiday (booked a while ago) for Feb half term in early December as that clearly was a non starter.

crabette · 04/01/2021 16:51

Nicola Sturgeon said today that (dependant on supply!) they're expecting the over 50's and vulnerable to at least have received one dose of vaccine by May. That was better than I'd expected having previously looked at the vaccine calculator, so gives me more optimism for later in the summer.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/01/2021 16:53

I was.

Increasingly not.

It was a landmark birthday present to myself Sad

AlternativePerspective · 04/01/2021 16:57

No.

I think it’s highly unlikely that the vaccination schedule will follow the plan that is currently set out, and that it’s more likely that it will take a year minimum to vaccinate enough people to bring down cases sufficiently enough to enable foreign travel.

Added to which, a lot of the holiday companies will have folded by then, so your options will be less.

Sarahandduck18 · 04/01/2021 16:57

Definitely not this year.

Next unlikely due to finances/economy.

TeenTraumaTrials · 04/01/2021 17:04

My hopes are fading. We are due to go to States for trip of a lifetime in June cancelled from April 19 (originally moved to Oct 19 - cue hysterical laughter at naive optimism.) As we moved it voluntarily we have no chance of ever seeing a refund or claiming on insurance and there is no way we could afford to start from scratch. Will be gutted to write off that much money.

LIZS · 04/01/2021 17:04

Not until vaccinated, so unlikely.

JacobReesMogadishu · 04/01/2021 17:06

I’d be amazed if I get to the Lake District
