Do You realistically expect to be going abroad in 2021?

Having missed out on a holiday abroad in 2020 I'm thinking about what will be possible in 2021. I'm scheduled for my vaccination in about April 2021 bit despite this its going to depend a lot on the country you're intending to visit.

So with vaccines, self quarantine and pre holiday testing do people think they will be going abroad this year?

No. As much as I am missing my holidays, I just accept that I can't make plans with any certainty at the moment.

movingonup20 · 10/01/2021 11:30

I'm booked for September but it's fully refundable. Travelling by motorcycle do the ultimate in social distancing!

yawnsvillex · 10/01/2021 11:33

No. Although 3 holidays deferred from 2020. I've accepted I'll take the financial hit resentful thou

Daisy829 · 10/01/2021 11:35

We were vaguely discussing if we should book France for the end of august but I don’t think we will. We’ve got a uk break for the start of June which will hopefully be okay. Will wait and see what happens for any other hols. I’m sure 2022 will be fine though.

SnowyPetals · 10/01/2021 11:36

We won't be booking anything just yet but our hope is to have a small UK break in the summer, and to be able to take a snow holiday at Christmas, and make that our "main" holiday instead of the summer.

wizzbangfizz · 10/01/2021 12:51

We managed to go abroad last august and may well go again this august.

sansou · 10/01/2021 16:32

No. UK week booked in July and even that one isn't terribly far from home. The vaccination program is basically work in progress and only time will tell how effective it is or isn't and this will take months as a minimum. Summer 2021 will be worst than summer 2020 unless the vaccines prove to be miracle silver bullets to all the variants of COVID 19
around the world. As much as I would love life to return to normal asap, I suspect 2022 is more realistic.

GlobeUs · 11/01/2021 08:46

Not for a holiday, no.

I may travel for a new job later in the year, but I am waiting to see on that one until the last minute, and it would be to Israel if their vaccine programme was still running as well as it is now (and if I had had both vaccines and we were allowed to travel between the UK and Israel).

I certainly wouldn't want to travel to an international tourist hub until the vaccine programmes internationally have really, really taken off or it becomes compulsory for people who are travelling to have been vaccinated.

Redwinestillfine · 11/01/2021 08:47

No. We've booked a staycation

smudge44 · 11/01/2021 22:42

I moved our June 2020 holiday in Mallorca to May 2021 in the optimism that a year later the pandemic would be under control.

Now my wife and I are increasingly nervous about our May holiday. We have a toddler and I worry about getting stuck out there or one of us getting sick. It's a rock and a hard place. If we cancel we lose £600. Regret not just asking for a refund at the time!

purpleproses · 11/01/2021 22:46

Our holiday was cancelled and rearranged for this year, I am expecting it to be cancelled this year. I suppose it will offset our travel last year when we went long haul to see family.

purpleproses · 11/01/2021 22:48

@MotheringShites

Well we managed to go abroad four times in 2020 so I expect it will be possible at some point in 2021.
How on earth did you manage that ?!Shock
Hairbrush123 · 13/01/2021 23:08

Well I went on holiday four times last year so I’m certain I’ll go somewhere this year. I’ve booked Mexico for October and rebooked Chile for December. I’m hoping I can go for a UK break for my birthday in April and maybe a long weekend in Europe somewhere in July and September. We shall see!

Hairbrush123 · 13/01/2021 23:10

purpleproses, I personally managed to go away twice before the pandemic in 2020. Once in February and once in March, during the pandemic I went away in July and September thanks to air corridors.

teenagetantrums · 13/01/2021 23:19

I'm hoping September. We had holiday abroad early match last year before lockdown and UK one in September. I can't see why travel won't be possible by September. We have postponed our wedding from June to September so hoping to get away afterwards. I think June will still be a nightmare.

EasterIssland · 13/01/2021 23:21

Hoping to Spain in may to visit my family and then September some nature country in Europe

Keepyourdistance000 · 14/01/2021 09:12

We hope to have a long haul holiday October/November this year, not booked anything and only cautiously optimistic at the moment. Will see how the vaccine roll outs go and of course the overall situation.

Otherwise it's more likely Scotland or Ireland if abroad isn't an option.

Zannado · 20/01/2021 00:32

We aren’t booking anything for 2021 personally because it won’t feel like a holiday to us if you have to wear masks and keep your distance etc but I’m really hoping to go away in spring 2022 for my 40th and not have to wear masks and social distance etc

mantlepiece · 20/01/2021 03:23

No, not expecting to be able to travel in 2021.

Borders closed almost everywhere and no sign of opening any time soon.

I think even travelling within the UK will be difficult so am researching options for day trips fairly local once the weather picks up.

I get that some people like to have something to look forward to, but I’m the type of person that would find booking something with so low odds of happening extremely stressful and would rather wait until things were more certain.

Alaimo · 22/01/2021 15:19

I'm not booking anything. I don't have kids though, so it's easier to just decide on something at late notice and/or go outside the school holidays.

Roselilly36 · 22/01/2021 15:24

Really unlikely.

PatsyKen · 25/01/2021 13:50

So I have booked a package to Spain with TUI for July which says you get a refund of you can’t travel because of government guidelines or if you’d need to quarantine in the other country. However, with the news this morning that you’d need to pay for a quarantine hotel in the UK after, I’m wondering if they will still refund. I think not! I was planning to change the dates to next year anyway but would rather have a refund.

lubeybooby · 25/01/2021 13:54

Nope

smudge44 · 25/01/2021 22:57

@TeenTraumaTrials

My hopes are fading. We are due to go to States for trip of a lifetime in June cancelled from April 19 (originally moved to Oct 19 - cue hysterical laughter at naive optimism.) As we moved it voluntarily we have no chance of ever seeing a refund or claiming on insurance and there is no way we could afford to start from scratch. Will be gutted to write off that much money.
@TeenTraumaTrials If your tour operator cancels the trip you should get the same options of a rebooking, voucher or refund. Unless you cancel the trip, you should not lose your money.
Bluntness100 · 25/01/2021 22:59

Honestly no. We are rolling out the vaccine the fastest other than Israel, so other countries will have quarantine and we will have it coming back. So you can only habe a holiday if you’re willing to spend two weeks quarantining either side of it,
