Do You realistically expect to be going abroad in 2021?

Having missed out on a holiday abroad in 2020 I'm thinking about what will be possible in 2021. I'm scheduled for my vaccination in about April 2021 bit despite this its going to depend a lot on the country you're intending to visit.

So with vaccines, self quarantine and pre holiday testing do people think they will be going abroad this year?

No. I don't think I will book anything until things are vastly improved.

I would even be reluctant to book a UK break for the summer at this point.

BackforGood · 25/01/2021 23:26

I'd be reluctant to plan anything.
We'd got vague plans to celebrate a big birthday with a big trip in Feb 22, but are now presuming we'll leave it another year.
We might be able to go by then, but I don't want to book anything until I know we will definitely be able to go.

In truth, I'm not confident we will be able to go to Wales (from England) even this Summer, though I really hope we can. I crave some seaside.

I'm worried that it won't be cancelled but we'll have to pay for tests/prove vaccinated/isolate for 10 days on return - none of which are viable options. We are booked through BA so might get a voucher for the cost of hotel/flights but we'd never spend that amount on a normal holiday so would struggle to use it. Plus our park tickets etc were all booked direct and while they were extended by a year I don't see then extending again so if we can't go this year they'll be gone and that's the bit we wouldn't be able to pay again. Insurance have low limit for those types of thing so we'd lose almost all of that money.

fuzzyduck1 · 01/02/2021 07:22

I was in Thailand In March 2020 had 3 flights cancelled on us.
Also looking at a departure board full of cancelled flights isn’t much fun.
I think I’ll wait until 2022 before venturing abroad again.

MirandaMarple · 16/02/2021 19:00

No.

The major UK tou operator is currently in more debt than Thomas Cook were.

I don't expect traditional package holidays to return to normal for a very long time.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 26/02/2021 17:01

I've been uncharacteristically reckless and booked for the summer. It's as secure as it can get, though I accept there's a risk to my deposit if the company goes bust (not sure if ATOL covers that).

I can quarantine for two weeks at home upon return if necessary. If I'd have to quarantine in a hotel, the holiday will be refunded. If we go into lockdown, it'll be refunded. If I get COVID, it'll be refunded.

I'm betting on the country allowing vaccinated tourists by the summer. I usually wouldn't do something so uncertain but I'm bloody desperate for a holiday and having something to look forward to is worth the deposit money.

peak2021 · 26/02/2021 18:07

Not until an event in mid-October, and nothing has been booked yet.

peaceanddove · 28/02/2021 10:22

Absolutely. DH and I have booked 10 days in the Italian Lakes at the start of July and we've both already been vaccinated. Even if we have to isolate when we come back we are still determined to go.

We've also paid for DD and her boyfriend to go to Grand Canaria in July for her 18th birthday.

chocolatecronetta · 28/02/2021 13:27

We're hoping to get away at some point but haven't booked anything and won't until things are a lot calmer covid wise as I've been shielding all year, it's been a bore but c'est la vie at the moment.

Also have only had the first jab so far, waiting to hear about the second, I do wonder how many people booking their hols have actually had their first yet.

AlwaysLatte · 28/02/2021 13:35

I hope we can get last minute flights to B.C. but not counting on it. 🥲

AlwaysLatte · 28/02/2021 13:36

Presumably we can just isolate when we get back? I'm hoping that's an option.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 28/02/2021 13:37

Nothing abroad this year, I don’t fancy it either, even though i am vaccinated.
Hopefully uk holidays will go ahead from summer.

Spaceman1 · 28/02/2021 13:43

Holiday booked to Greece for mid August and expect to be able to go.

Avidreader12 · 02/03/2021 08:32

Things might be better in uk in summer but a lot of overseas destinations tourism restaurants activities hotels etc are shut even if you allowed to travel from uk doesn’t mean your destination will allow you in also will people want to bare the extra costs of testing uncertainty etc

Chimeraforce · 02/03/2021 08:35

No. This will be third year not going abroad and we (except DD) miss it.
Frustrated as our passports expire in June 2022 too.
I'm wondering if it'll ever happen and I'm starting to fear flying 🙄✈️ especially with rusty pilots.

AnyFucker · 02/03/2021 08:40

No. We have flight vouchers and a villa deposit on account but don’t expect to use them this year. The best I am hoping for is a last minute reprieve in Oct/Nov but that would be if 1) winter numbers don’t start to rise again 2) COVID tests at home and destination are not required 3) where I want to go will let me in and and 4) quarantine is off the table

I can’t see it somehow

MrsKeats · 02/03/2021 08:45

No.
I think booking this summer is mad.

May17th · 05/03/2021 01:25

I think limited flight will go ahead by Aug/Sept. Some people managed to fly last year. I will have been vaccinated by end of May both doses so I have booked for back end of Aug.

zafferana · 05/03/2021 08:37

I'm now feeling a lot more optimistic about overseas travel this year. Even a couple of weeks ago I was thinking it was really hit and miss, but the announcement that Greece and Spain are both in talks with the UK to resume travel this summer, and the announcement this morning that Cyprus will reopen to fully vaccinated Brits from 1st May are really good signs. I'm also hopeful that our trip to the US in August may be able to go ahead, because both countries' vaccine roll outs are going so well.

smudge44 · 05/03/2021 09:25

I still hope to visit Spain in September for some summer sun, but am going to wait till a few weeks before the departure date before booking anything so can assess what the situation is.

MoiraNotRuby · 05/03/2021 09:28

No. I think there will be a stream of different variants and quarantine rules will have to to responding to that.

Mind you I can't afford a holiday anyway so it makes little difference to me!!

guest2013 · 05/03/2021 09:37

100% will be going. Like other people, we went abroad 4 times during the pandemic thanks to travel corridors. Have booked Italy in July and Greece in August. Will also be going home at least once to see family. Have a couple of weekends booked in this country too. Looking forward to a great summer 🥳

TiddleTaddleTat · 05/03/2021 09:54

Even if we could afford to go abroad this year I don't fancy all the fuss with masks, anxiety about ventilation, variants, risk of being stuck abroad if unwell, etc etc. I would rather save what I can towards a bigger holiday on the other side. Am dreaming about lying on a beach somewhere but was lucky enough to have a great sunny holiday abroad in 2019 and every year before that. We can wait.

OhToBeASeahorse · 05/03/2021 10:56

No but 2bh indont much fancy flying with a 2.5 year old and a 6 month old. Would probably stay UK based this year anyway. Weve booked a week in norfolk in June, if we manage that I'll be happy.

steppemum · 05/03/2021 11:03

well, we can have use of a house in Southern France.
We don't have to pay anything now, we just agree amongst us who is going on which week. We will reserve a couple of weeks in August, and then decide in about July whether to book the ferry.

On that basis, then yes, I think we will go ahead. We will all be vaccinated by then.
