Do You realistically expect to be going abroad in 2021?

Having missed out on a holiday abroad in 2020 I'm thinking about what will be possible in 2021. I'm scheduled for my vaccination in about April 2021 bit despite this its going to depend a lot on the country you're intending to visit.

So with vaccines, self quarantine and pre holiday testing do people think they will be going abroad this year?

Well we managed to go abroad four times in 2020 so I expect it will be possible at some point in 2021.

We’ve just cancelled our honeymoon in Scotland in October. We’re in England. This year is going to be a total write off again.

Khtchkn · 04/01/2021 22:47

Hi @TeenTraumaTrials why won’t you get a refund? If the holiday is cancelled surely they will refund you? We booked a package holiday for May this year but if it’s not going ahead and they cancel then it says we be t a choice of getting a refund/change to another date (although I’d want a refund as don’t want to pay any extra if we book for 2022).

Galonabudget29 · 05/01/2021 00:16

We were meant to go to spain in December to see family for christmas, obviously we couldnt go as London went into tier 4 and spain shut its boarders but Ryanair only let us change our flights for free till March, so now im worried that we will have to rearrange and pay even more!

Neolara · 05/01/2021 00:20

No. We've just booked a UK break for August.

nancy75 · 05/01/2021 00:26

I’ve booked Italy for the last 2 weeks in October, but can get a refund up to 2 weeks before departure on everything - we’ll just have to wait & see

Silkiechickscat · 05/01/2021 00:43

No - would expect it to be UK again for us. Not even sure with 2022 as not sure what will happen with kids as they won't be eligible for vaccine. I might get one in 2022 if I'm lucky

VienneseWhirligig · 05/01/2021 00:47

I have a holiday booked in the UK in May, and long haul in June. The long haul one is a rearranged holiday from last year but I am fairly sure it will not go ahead. I hope the May one will as its to the place where my late DH is scattered and where I would normally go at least 3 times a year, having not been since scattering him in 2019 it feels like I've abandoned him even though it was his request to be there.

Zodlebud · 05/01/2021 19:41

We have our rescheduled trip to Asia booked for July 2021 (we supposed to be going June 2020). Covered by insurance and the company was so good giving a full refund straight away last year - big shout out to TRAILFINDERS - that we have gone ahead and taken advantage of some huge discounts. The trip is costing £3.5k less than the 2020 one for the exact same thing on the same equivalent dates.

We do call it our imaginary holiday though. I absolutely wouldn’t have booked it if it wasn’t just shifting it from last year and I knew there was zero chance of financial loss.

If vaccine production can be boosted so that private travel clinics can give them alongside normal travel jabs by May time then I feel fairly confident we can go. If not then we can forget it. Our only exposure is the interest on the money we would have got if we held onto it.

I hope to get away. I managed to get away last September and felt perfectly safe . I run a travel business and we were swamped. As soon as end June hit people were booking everything they could get hands on. Even local hotels, caravan parks you name just to go somewhere.
This year policies are better around rebooking or cancellation and covid insurance so think people feel more confidant regarding refunds etc.
Prices are so cheap at moment but once travel corridors open the airlines will up their prices and holidays will go up.
Also have so many booking a big trip for 2022. They have said got no holiday in 20 they are too worried about 21 so going all out for 22. Have had 4 week 5 star Caribbean, Vegas and cruises. Just booked one for 9k for couple 2 kids but they have 19 months to pay it off.

Funf · 07/01/2021 09:35

No
Just glad to be still alive.
Having a good look at whats on my door step incase we are allowed out, we just have to make the most of what we have.

SJaneS49 · 07/01/2021 12:11

I hope so and we have a cancellable holiday booked in August - but who knows really?

AgeLikeWine · 07/01/2021 12:13

Yes. We usually take our two main holidays in June & September. Even if June starts to look unlikely, September should be fine.

steppemum · 07/01/2021 12:16

I wouldn't book or pay for anything.

But dh is Dutch, so once it is safe we will go to Holland and visit his family. But only when rates are low here, as we don't want to take it with us.

We also get use of a holiday home in France. If it is safe we will go there, as doesn't need booking, just arranging when it is free with family.

We should be vaccinated by summer as over 50. But kids obviously not.

cantmovewont · 07/01/2021 12:19

I have a multi entry visa to India as a dependant - i'll be going at Easter for sure, negative covid test and flights providing.

Caspianberg · 07/01/2021 13:52

I’m hoping to travel. We are British, and I was last in Uk Nov 2019, so hoping to see family and introduce new baby ( he will be 1 year+ by then)

cjpark · 08/01/2021 20:24

I'm hoping to go abroad in August. DH and I are both NHS frontline works and have been vaccinated. We haven't had more than 3 days in a row off since Christmas 2019.
I've booked a refundable hotel overseas and will book flights end of this month.

silentpool · 08/01/2021 20:33

You couldn't pay me to travel right now. I'm sitting out till 2022.

tanstaafl · 08/01/2021 20:33

hoping to travel Spain late September or October but won’t book anything until last minute.

Hope the vaccination program , plus warm weather Europe wide, plus some planning by various governments will allow travel before the winter comes along.

I can see winter 21/22 being (semi) locked down to ‘see off’ C19.

MidnightHangingTree · 08/01/2021 20:34

Yes - we went to a Greek island in July 2020 for 2 weeks and are planning to go again in July 2021.

Tier10 · 09/01/2021 18:34

Yes.
I think they’ll be windows of opportunity when we’ll be able to go abroad. Last September we managed a week away, we booked it the day before we went. Normally I have a few holidays booked up but this year I’ll do late notice holidays.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 09/01/2021 18:37

No. But if the opportunity arises I will grab it and go on holiday. I’d rather work through than have another staycation in the pouring rain.

FelineUK · 09/01/2021 22:34

Hoping massively but can't see it happening until we're both vaccinated which could by by end of October. We normally do multi-country road trips which require a lot of planning and I'm anxious about booking any last minute holidays so we might do a UK break this year, depending on how things go, and then plan to go abroad next year. It's depressing but I don't have much choice - DH is very cautious, and rightly so, but it's groundhog day every day and cabin fever is rising!

balzamico · 09/01/2021 23:29

We very optimistically booked the canaries for Easter - that looks unlikely, we also have a break in October nah oh we're more hopeful for and we're pondering today whether we'd get abroad in the summer. Dh think so, and is desperate to go somewhere hot, he'll be vaccinated by then - I'm much more dubious and also less desperate to get away

Khtchkn · 10/01/2021 11:26

We’re going Greece in May. Aren’t they offering from next week covid tests as proof you’re negative 72hrs before you depart/Arrive in the uk? BBC news says it gives results within 20-30min which are cheaper and easier to obtain than the "gold standard" PCR tests, which need to be developed in a lab.
