After Covid, would you give up flying to combat climate change?

After a horrid year we all want a holiday but would you be prepared to give up flying to combat climate change or is that a pre covid thing now? No axe to grind, just interested in peoples views.

OP posts:
JassyRadlett · 12/12/2020 20:54

No.

All my family live on the other side of the world. All my husband’s family lives here. Post-pandemic being able to see them will be even more precious.

We will try to reduce our impact elsewhere (eg driving, only taking the train for other holidays). But I’m under no illusion that I’m making a very damaging choice.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 12/12/2020 20:54

Yeah, possibly. I'm used to not going places now anyway.

theresagiantonthebeach · 12/12/2020 20:54

I already have

Wornout12108 · 12/12/2020 20:54

No,
Family dispersed across the globe and I love to travel.

SD1978 · 12/12/2020 20:55

No. All family is in UK, I'm in Aus. Divorced and need the trips home.

midgebabe · 12/12/2020 21:00

Haven't given up flying but limit it...once every three years or so ( true before covid )

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/12/2020 21:05

No, I love travelling and seeing the world. But, We'd usually go longhaul maybe once every year maximum, and maybe once to visit family in the UK thats a 10 hour drive.

We haven't done longhaul in the last 18 months with no plans to, and we last went to see family a year ago, again with no current plans to see them anytime soon sadly. When things get back to normal Big holidays are likely to much less frequent!

JonasKahnwald · 12/12/2020 21:06

Absolutely not, I love travelling.

thatscurvydogbeard · 12/12/2020 21:24

I'm seriously considering doing this.

midgebabe · 12/12/2020 21:26

I love travelling. Where I can I will travel slow ( ok. I love trains ) , or smaller distances, there is so much world on the doorstep

rhowton · 12/12/2020 21:27

Absolutely not!

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 12/12/2020 21:31

No - absolutely not. Although we don’t always fly and often travel by a combination of ferry/train when travelling abroad. Haven’t done long haul since 2008.

AgeLikeWine · 12/12/2020 21:33

Absolutely not a chance in hell. As soon as I possibly can when this fucking nightmare is over, I will be on my way to LHR. I can’t believe I have actually missed the place, but I have.

firstimemamma · 12/12/2020 21:33

I already have.

Youngatheart00 · 12/12/2020 21:36

No. I use a green energy supplier, my next car will be a hybrid / electric, I recycle and try and be mindful about my consumption.

But travel means a lot to me, I couldn’t give it up. Have found being ‘grounded’ this year very frustrating. Only tend to take one long haul flight a year though and a couple of short haul. I’d definitely be prepared to look at more train or ferry based trips too.

MummaBear4321 · 12/12/2020 21:36

My entire family live in a different country. So absolutely no way.

AntiHop · 12/12/2020 21:37

We go on one short haul holiday a year (not this year). But we don't have a car.

ThreeFeetTall · 12/12/2020 22:27

I think COVIDs impact on the airline industry might make the choice for me

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 13/12/2020 05:46

It’s so hard for me - I love to travel but I also live abroad. We’re hoping to move back to the U.K. within the year and as part of that will commit to no flights for 3-5yrs and get to know the U.K. again and travel to Europe by train. But we will likely need and want to come back to our adopted country at some point.

Having said that, I was feeling so guilty about the amount we flew, I’m glad Covid has grounded us for a year and I would happily not be getting back on a plane if it weren’t for the the fact I miss my family so much

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 13/12/2020 05:51

No

My Mum (& siblings etc) and friends live in NZ - I live in England. I don't plan on never seeing them again.

As much as I love England I don't plan on not seeing any of the rest of the world again.

10% of people do 90% of the travelling - they're the ones who need to cut back & hopefully business has learned how much they can do via Zoom instead.

Posturesorposes · 13/12/2020 05:58

A rather privileged question to ask OP. As the only child of aging Asian parents living in Asia with the rest of my family whilst I live my small children and spouse in the UK - no - I cannot give up flying as we go and see them as we should - and at various points I will need to go and see to their health, well-being and one day such things as funerals and estates.

OffredOfjune · 13/12/2020 06:01

Not a chance. Not willing to give up the once a year luxury of getting away somewhere. Also, my DF lives on the other side of the world, so i'd never see him again.

Toilenstripes · 13/12/2020 06:02

I think business travel and jet setters are the ones who need to cut back, not those of us who take an annual holiday.

Onedropbeat · 13/12/2020 06:04

I would, DH definitely wouldn’t

So I see myself in air travel as soon as we can unfortunately

SnuggyBuggy · 13/12/2020 06:04

No, I have some bucket list places I'd like to visit. We don't go abroad every year though.
