So where should I take the children away for the weekend that isn't Brighton and isn't a hassle?

I know, I'm very lazy. But dh about to bugger off for a few weeks. I'm madly busy at work. Will be throwing children at the mercy of friends, MIL, anyone who looks like they vaguely know what to do with them and thought it might be quite nice to take them away for a night in a hotel on the weekend.

We're SW London (v near to start of M3) and wherever it is, we'll drive there but I don't want to be driving for hours.

Can anyone think of anywhere

And if the weather's nice you can go to the beach at West Wittering

Blu · 14/09/2007 11:58

Arundel is an excellent castle.
Climping...is that the little beach i am thinking of?

foxinsocks · 14/09/2007 12:00

I like Arundel. I seem to remember a school trip somewhere near there with Roman mosaics and a little Roman village. Is it Fishbourne or somewhere like that?

it is indeed fishbourne.

MarinaLaPasionaria · 14/09/2007 12:05

West Wittering is delightful
Oooh, and the Weald and Downland

foxinsocks · 14/09/2007 12:07

aah thanks, have found it online. That and Bath - my two fave school trips. Such a shame they don't do Latin/ancient Greek at school any more really. Was totally fascinated by all that stuff when I was little!

MarinaLaPasionaria · 14/09/2007 12:08

Foxy, find the Latin in Primary thread and see what I am currently up to

bossykate · 14/09/2007 12:08

well you could do a weekend in bath!

MarinaLaPasionaria · 14/09/2007 12:09

YY, isn't there a Children's Literature Festival in Bath this month?

Cammelia · 14/09/2007 13:27

The weather forecast on R4 just said its going to rain almost everywhere except the southeast this weekend

bossykate · 14/09/2007 13:29

cam, my dear, would you be kind enough to tell me where you stayed when you went to pompeii? tia

Cammelia · 14/09/2007 13:54

this hotel

I can highly reccommend it

bossykate · 14/09/2007 13:57

thank you looks gorgeous! do you think it would be doable w/o a car?

chocolatemummy · 14/09/2007 14:00

There is a lovely caravan park on Isle of Wight called Thorness Bay, its a Park Resorts park
They do very reasonable last minute weekends if there is any availability.
It has its own little rustic beach and the Gold statics are like little bungalows with varandas etc, there is a club house with medioca (is that how you spell it?) entertainment and good old Sparky club and shows for the kids which is great actually, my dd loves it all, a nice little pool and the park is full of trees and very spacious and peaceful, so er yes, I recommend that to anyone

Cammelia · 14/09/2007 14:20

We did not hire a car bk. No way would I reccommend driving around the Amalfi coast or through Naples

We got picked up by the hotel at Naples Airport and I sat with my hands over my eyes while the very good looking young Italian driver sped through the 5 or so lanes of traffic

We went by train to Pompeii from Sorrento: the hotel is 5 minutes at the most walk from the train station. The train cost about 2 Euros return trip and there is a station literally at the entrance of Pompeii.

The hotel has a lift that goes down to the waterfront to get on a boat for Capri

bossykate · 14/09/2007 14:24

cammelia, thanks for that. i feel a holiday coming on

WideWebWitch · 15/09/2007 21:32

lol at this thread. Who was threadworm then? And surely Henry Moore wasn't blind?!
FIS, are you from that neck of the woods then if you know Codford etc? I went to school in Salisbury (same one as Cod, diff year)

Have you decided where to go?
