OK where shall the Peaheads go this summer?

I'm not feeling inspired. I think the February rain and mud has just sucked the life out of me.

Four children, 9,6,3 and 1.5. Not France or Greece (for reasons which I won't go into). Would love to go to the US but not Cape Cod. Either hotel or Villa/rental. Needs to involve wonderful beaches or lakes, swimming pool unless on top of beach, things to do around and about, relatively kid friendly, and a place that is interesting in its own right. Guaranteed hot but not super-boiling. Europe or US/Canada. Buggyable. Assume a healthy budget.

Inspire me please?!

I WANT to go here......

sounds just what you desire pph.

villa italy

PrincessPeaHead · 01/03/2007 17:09

It is stunning. Completely booked in July and August though. And that bit of Italy must be 100F in August - would be fantastic in June/Sept I think!
Wow what a pool...

kslatts · 01/03/2007 17:13

We went to canada a couple of years ago and had a great time, we are not really into beach holidays though, we travelled round and stayed in Toronto, Niagara falls and Ottawa. Although we were not near the beach we spent 3 nights at a lake in quebec which was fantastic.

bossykate · 01/03/2007 17:17

croatia? tuscany? hilton head, s. carolina? slovenia - lakes and mountains a plenty? sicily?

Sanibel Island, Florida Keys, condo hire.

Whoooosh · 01/03/2007 17:26

Hilton Head South Carolina-fabulous place and brilliant beaches.

Tamum · 01/03/2007 17:27

I really like Mount Desert Island in Maine, but haven't been there with children, so I don't know a place to stay. There's whale watching and stuff like that, spectacular scenery, oldie worldy American charm. You'd have to fly to Boston and then on from there on a tiny plane or hire a car though....

zippitippitoes · 01/03/2007 17:28

need more photos of the area

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/03/2007 17:29

here?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/03/2007 17:31

although.....

Skyler · 01/03/2007 17:33

Def recommend Hilton Head Island South Carolina. Amazing beaches you can cycle along, dolphin spotting, v child friendly, lots of tennis and golf loads of private rentals many with pool, nice harbour with amazing huge yachts to look at. Flat so very buggyable too.

zippitippitoes · 01/03/2007 17:35

scrap lake beauport due to algae on the lake

Soapbox · 01/03/2007 17:35

How about Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, with a City break in San Fran at the end, look at some of the cowboy towns like Columbia and Senoma. I think there is a Town (City?) hotel in Columbia from recollection where you can stay, but it has been preserved exactly like it was in the Gold Rush days. You could even arrange a night or two in the Napa Valley for a spot of wine tasting

San Diego might be nice too - although possibly a little hot in the summer.

Seattle is supposed to be nice, although not been there myself.

Calorina is lovely, but awful at that time of the year, very humid and full of biting insects

Soapbox · 01/03/2007 17:36

Sonoma

Soapbox · 01/03/2007 17:38

Sanibel is lovely too - although my children were deeply unimpressed that the sand didn't make good sandcastles

The sand is actually very finely ground down shells, which don't stick together very well!

Although the sand situation is the same, there are some nice hotels in Naples too.

MrsWobble · 01/03/2007 17:38

Venice Lido?

Soapbox · 01/03/2007 17:40

Hmmmm - that would be good Mrs Wobble. We were hugely impressed with the way all the beachy bits were organised, with cabanos that you can rent for the day (but get there early) etc.

It has a kind of faded grandour feel to some of the old hotels too. Venice is supposed to stink in high summer though and crowds could be a problem?

Tamum · 01/03/2007 17:43

Ahh, but look at this ...

Soapbox · 01/03/2007 17:44

Soupbox drags herself back to work

Talking about holidays is so much more interesting - maybe I should become a travel agent instead

Soapbox · 01/03/2007 17:46

Dammit Tamum - you dragged me back again

Stunningly beautiful! Might put it on the list!

PPH, you could look at Tripadvisors best of 2006 - or Conde Naste traveller awards, if you are considering a hotel.

Ceolas · 01/03/2007 17:46

Vancouver.

The flight will be long but it's beautiful and not too hot.
