OK where shall the Peaheads go this summer?

I'm not feeling inspired. I think the February rain and mud has just sucked the life out of me.

Four children, 9,6,3 and 1.5. Not France or Greece (for reasons which I won't go into). Would love to go to the US but not Cape Cod. Either hotel or Villa/rental. Needs to involve wonderful beaches or lakes, swimming pool unless on top of beach, things to do around and about, relatively kid friendly, and a place that is interesting in its own right. Guaranteed hot but not super-boiling. Europe or US/Canada. Buggyable. Assume a healthy budget.

Inspire me please?!

I love Bermuda too:-slightly more formal and weather can be a little up and down in the Summer but it is a wonderful island.

  • I miss Norway - does it show at all???

Scummy, I'm not sure that it's all that expensive - I've had cheapo holidays there, doing walking/outdoors type things and staying in mountain huts, but I have family and friends there so of course that makes it a bit easier. Norwegians visiting the UK always used to complain how expensive it was in UK!

I now live in NZ so am not going to be popping over for a visit anytime soon... mind you, in many ways NZ is just Norway with more Vegemite.

Whoooosh · 01/03/2007 21:12

Wellie-isn't NZ Norway but with decent weather?

Aloha · 01/03/2007 21:16

Soapbox, I did your US holiday once - right down the Yosemite, San Fran, cowboy towns and the Sonoma and Napa valleys - plus a weekend in New York thrown in. Most fab holiday I ever, ever had,but wasted on children I think.
If I had enough money...hmmm...probably US, but you are bored with that
Or Greece...but you are bored with that too!

Marina · 01/03/2007 21:16

I would love to do the Hurtigruten. Go on pph
Or go to a two centre holiday in Corsica - St Florent or Calvi for beaches and boating and then the Gorges de la Restonica for fabulous mountain scenery

welliemum · 01/03/2007 21:17

Dunno about decent - summer fell on a Tuesday this year

JanH · 01/03/2007 21:17

Scandiwegia is semi-dead in August - kids back to school and everything touristy closes down.

Aloha · 01/03/2007 21:17

Actually if I were you, I'd stay at home!

Marina · 01/03/2007 21:17

Welliemum I know someone from Trondheim and every time I look at him I think he was completely bonkers to choose to live in...Bermondsey

welliemum · 01/03/2007 21:21

Bermondsey. Trondheim. Trondheim. Bermondsey.

Why?????????

littlemissbossy · 01/03/2007 21:22

PPH how healthy is that budget?

littlemissbossy · 01/03/2007 21:23

LOL at Bermondsey post - do the villas have pools there too

Aloha · 01/03/2007 21:39

Oh that Nantucket house is my dream house!

Soapbox · 01/03/2007 21:49

Gorgeous Nantucket house - but at £3000 a night it will have to stay on my dream list a while me thinks

Just checked guide book - South Carolina is 100 degrees F and 50% humidity (average) during high summer - yuckity yuck

PrincessPeaHead · 01/03/2007 22:29

oh thanks for that soapy - no, that doesn't appeal. cape cod never gets that humid I don't think.
That nantucket house is very beautiful (possibly a bit too beautiful for my brood!), I remember reading about a 10 page spread on it in House and Garden a couple of years ago! Budget doesn't extend to $3000 and 2 empty bedrooms a night, I'm afraid
Scandiwhatsit - nope thanks. Spent too long working there to want to holiday there. And I hate herrings
Aloha, I'm NOT bored of Greece! But going there anyway.
Comeoveneer, where are you staying on Cape Cod? Because it is really quite a big long place and there isn't much point me telling you all about fantastic beaches in Truro if you are going to be in Hyannis....

Not getting v ery far with this am I.
Corsica did someone say?

Having done Virginia Aug, Sept, Oct, I wouldn't touch SC with a bargepole in August.

PrincessPeaHead · 01/03/2007 22:52

oh sue then how about chesapeake end of july/be of august?

sigh, don't answer, I'm sure you are going to say 100% humidity! I was in DC in August once and it was soggy

SueW · 01/03/2007 22:53

What about a Californian beach house? The beach is lovely in July/Aug whereas inland is hideous. It hovered around 75F/25C when we were there. Bang on perfect IMO. Never felt humid.

Canada is lovely but I wouldn't know which bits to recommend. I have fond memories of all over but I stay with family/friends so resorts are a total mystery to me.

crystalpony · 01/03/2007 22:55

How come you don't want to go to Cape Cod? I absolutely love it there. We stayed in Sandwich but drove all over, couple nights in Boston, night in New York, Newport and on Nantucket.

It's a truly beautiful place isn't it?

SueW · 01/03/2007 22:55

Didn't pph say her DH wanted a change from cape cod?

brimfull · 01/03/2007 22:56

I second Bermuda, lived there for a few yrs when we first got married, very relaxing place and so beautiful!

crystalpony · 01/03/2007 22:56

Oh sorry, did't see that.

Aloha · 01/03/2007 22:56

What about Norfolk? Does global warming make it any more attractive?

PrincessPeaHead · 01/03/2007 23:00

I just don't think I can stand the flight to california with 4 children. Including an 18month old which has to be the WORST age for flying IMO!

No No Norfolk. Have had one holiday there. On the beach in jeans and a sweater. What is the POINT?

SueW · 01/03/2007 23:02

Thinking about California.... possibly anywhere coastal won't be too bad? We did spend some time at Chesapeake/Virginia Beach but it wasn't until early Oct so no idea what the weather would be like when you want to go. It was pleasantly warm and sunny when we were there but a fierce breeze iyswim.
