Just back from holiday there, first time on any Balearic Island for all of us.

I just loved it.
I am now looking at holiday lets for the October school week Grin

How did I not know about this magical island??
Confused

I also found a wonderful property available to buy for a mere 5.8 million Euros Grin. V nice it is too. I may start playing the lottery….

We lived in Mallorca for a year and DH is there every six weeks or so! Love it.

giraffesCantReachTheirToes · 19/07/2016 06:05

I loved Menorca because it was a little bit breezy. No idea if that is all the time - I have it in my head it is. It just takes the edge off the heat

I remember flying directly from Glasgow but that was 16 years ago.

itstheYbirdstop · 19/07/2016 06:11

What hotels can you recommend in Puerto Pollensa? I've been toying with this place for some time!

donajimena · 19/07/2016 06:15

I stayed in Portinatx in Ibiza.. twas beautiful.
I had the pleasure of living in Majorca.

cazzyg · 19/07/2016 06:20

Depends what you're looking for.

We stay at the Puerto Azul. The location is great and it's really good for families. The downside is they offer half board only. It used to be apartments that were converted into rooms so you get 2 rooms - a bedroom and a living room with a sofa that converts into beds and a fridge.

If you're looking for something a bit more refined, then the Miramar and Sis Pins are both on the sea front but don't have pools. Both have sun terraces on the beach. The Daina is also on the front and has a pool.

The Illa D'or is also lovely but pricey and a bit further out.

itstheYbirdstop · 19/07/2016 06:37

That's great thanks for that. I need a family option so will look into the Azul.

Chrisinthemorning · 19/07/2016 06:41

Love Mallorca. We stay in Camp de Mar and love eating in Port d'Andratx.
Not going again until next August

SkydivingFerret · 19/07/2016 06:46

I keep looking at majorca, has anyone stayed in Can Pastilla? I like how close it is to Palma (obvs realise it means close to the airport too) and that there are things to do. Probably going alone so prefer a resort holiday

giraffesCantReachTheirToes · 19/07/2016 06:57

Euphemia you could do both? My parents have moved to a seaside type location from Glasgow and also have a time share in a place in Mallorca. - SO you get both worlds.

cazzyg · 19/07/2016 07:07

Other options worth looking at for families - Villconcha and Flora. Flora is self catering but great location not as much going on as the Azul or Villa concha for children.

There's also the Playa mar and Club del Sol too but both are quite far out and more all inclusive type places so I tend not to recommend them.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2016 07:13

I also love Mallorca - we have stayed in Palma and Paguera and had day trips to Port Soller, Cala Llombards, Puerto Polensa, Formentor Lighthouse and Cala Mondrago on the east coast.

We also went to Andrax and Port Andrax which we found to be a bit 'Yacht Club Posh' and expensive. The inspiration for Andrax was the books by Peter Kerr who was a Scottish Farmer who lived there with his family for a few years - A sort of Driving Over Lemons in Mallorca instead of Andalucia.

I love reading travel books and will be making notes of the other suggestions on this thread. I have also read some of the Anna Nicholas books and am undecided whether I liked them or not - I think she is probably just a little bit too middle class for me.

I wasn't that taken with Puerto Pollensa and thought Port Soller was nicer but we did find a gin bar in PP which probably explains the attraction to mumsnetters Grin.

When we stay in Paguera (lovely beaches, most other tourists German, small family/older couples resort not like Magaluf etc) we always have a couple of trips to Cala Fornells which is a tiny resort the next bay along - brilliant for snorkelling.

. I am the least snobby person imaginable but half seriously think they should put separate planes on for people going to naice Mallorca instead of the Magaluf crowd. The 6 am EasyJet flight from LIverpool full of stags and hens was hell.

PacificDogwod · 19/07/2016 07:23

Oh, this turned in to a proper Mallorca/Balearics love fest! Grin

Thank you for all the recommendations

Our experience was that there was always a breeze at the coast and where we were based at the foothills of the mountains. Our day trip to Algaida (which was the furthest East we got) was like an outing in to an oven Grin - 35 degrees, not the tiniest whiff of a breeze and merciless son. I gather that the central plain can be like that.

I could SO retire there
I would learn Spanish and Mallorcan (?sp) and everything.
Oh well, my loins are girded to go to work this morning Sad

Ta for all the recommendations. Really want to get this right. Will probably be the last time we all go on holiday together and the first one with my daughter and her cousins. Last time I organised we went to Cadaques which was proper lovely, if anyone is looking for a mainland Spain option.

lurkingfromhome · 19/07/2016 08:20

Spain is generally brilliant, isn't it? I've had so many good holidays on the mainland and on Mallorca. So so beautiful. It is such a shame that for many people it STILL conjures up vile Magaluf hen nights and puking in the street kind of thing.

Loving Barbara's suggestion for separate flights GrinGrin

junebirthdaygirl · 19/07/2016 08:36

We went to Mallorca because we got a cheap deal. Had no expectations except sunshine. We fell in love with the place. Hired a car and drove everywhere. Found little beaches and lovely spots. You just reminded me of it all. Must plan to go back. I said to dh at the time this could become our place. Have to admit l was a bit embarrassed to say we were going when booked it.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2016 08:43

I agree lurking. it's my personal bugbear that lots of people assume that all people do on holiday in Spain is drink, eat British food and lay in the sun on the beach/in their all inclusive hotel.

We've had several holidays to inlands Andalucia and have barely scratched the surface and spend time exploring Granada, Ronda, Cordoba, Seville, the mountains and white villages, eating tapas and sitting in the little squares watching the world go by plus time lazing in the shade by the pool.

It's such a lovely area and that's just one region of Spain. There's so much to offer - cities, monuments, museums, parks, mountains, coast, watersports. I could go on all day.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2016 08:46

On second thoughts, it might be worth reporting this thread.

The last thing we want is the people who assume all there is to do is get pissed in the sun finding out that many parts of Spain offer fabulous cultural holidays and increasing demand. Wink

But then again, we've never been to Greece or Cyprus, so if Spain became too full, I could always start on there, carefully avoiding Kavos, Faliraki, Malia etc.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 19/07/2016 08:52

Just 3 days back from our 7th trip to Pollensa- We love it. We went sailing, horse riding, kids did Deep Water Solo, climbing, dh hires a bike and does those crazy climbs to the mountains. Beautiful place. And the local pink sunshine wine is lovely

TheFairyCaravan · 19/07/2016 09:05

We love Mallorca. The first time we went it was a late deal and all we could get. We fell in love with it. We've been about a dozen times.

My parents travel a lot but they won't even entertain the idea of Mallorca. They believe it's Magaluf everywhere. It's their loss.

DorynownotFloundering · 19/07/2016 10:00

Chrisinthemorning

Camp de Mar? !!! Went there as a child for about 4 summers in a row as it was the only place my workaholic father could relax. We stayed at the smallest family run hotel off the beach Villa Real I think it was called & one of only 4 in the resort 2 large ones further up the beach & one old one facing the beach but up on the cliff a little more- a colonial style one.
There was a little island cafe reached by a wooden footbridge & we used to go & have huge plates of calamari & chips for lunch !!😄😄
Happy days < childhood rose tinted glasses probs too>

AnyFucker · 19/07/2016 12:36

Where we were in Ibiza this year we did not hear one English accent.

Very Spanish area. Lovely.

itstheYbirdstop · 19/07/2016 14:02

barb you are a snob! But I love it. I'm all for separate planes. I don't want to mingle with riff raff on my holidays (I will go away with my mates and do that) Wink

itstheYbirdstop · 19/07/2016 14:04

anyfucker that is one of the most mumsnet comments I have heard in ages. God forbid you mingle with the British on your summer holidays. So..how do you say it 'chav'.

HarumScarumSanitarium · 19/07/2016 14:05

My inlaws have been to the same place twice a year for 12 years. I used to say to DH that I could not understand why they would not try anywhere new.

Until we went with them one year and have been every year for the last five years and cannot wait to go in August Grin

roomonmybroom · 19/07/2016 14:24

Oh share please AF PM if you have to! pretty please, I will share one with you in return Grin though you probably know it, and bet it is the same place anyway, but can never seem to find anywhere on Ibiza itself that is what I consider quiet and small.
I love Puerto Pollensa and have been quite a few times now, love it so much, but keep it under my hat, don't want to share it too much.
