Continuing the thread from Telly Addicts, just in time for episode 4

Musicmum, that's brilliant. I like the Elizabeth Woodville crown ring Grin

I loved this so much. Wednesday nights will never be the same!

The man with the eye patch was Francis Bryan, aka the Vicar of Hell. He was related to the Seymours and the Boleyns. Very interesting character.

In the book it was someone different though, will have to go and check who.

flippinada · 01/03/2015 11:26

Just to save confusion, Francis Bryan is the man in the eyepatch standing next to TC when AB was executed - he also in the episode 3 (I think).

Ohmygrood · 01/03/2015 12:19

It seems that upper class women were 'educated' in Tudor times, although at home with a tutor rather than at University I suppose.
Of course TC was not 'well born' so his educating his daughters would perhaps have had more passion behind it.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 01/03/2015 13:18

Re being 'well born'

Was there more social mobility-based on merit, competence and chutzpah- in those days, given that Wolsey and TC came from humble roots?-I mean, they're pretty major players

Or were they both v unusual? -I know More was more or less born to it, frinstance

funnyossity · 01/03/2015 13:22

The social mobility is very interesting.

DopeyDawg · 01/03/2015 13:38

*BOF: "Mantel plucked that out of her arse along with the kittens."

Ouch Shock Grin

I have spent too long looking at some of the very beautiful jewellery on the Royal Palaces site

You put the link in double square brackets.

If you want the description rather than the URL to appear in the post (as people usually do) then instead of just the URL in the bracket, it's URL space description.

It shows you next to the smiley list. It's easy, honestly.

Coup probably not paying for prayers to be said for her as that's exactly what the Protestants disliked about Catholicism! (If she really was a Protestant sympathiser). But perhaps giving alms to the poor as an act of charity?

SilenceInTheLibrary · 01/03/2015 18:48

Most likely "alms to the poor" coupedefoudre. She was queen, and as such such gave to the poor.

I love Ann Boleyn's story. Well, you know... not love... She was the first queen to be executed I believe. She can't have expected it.

If he looked like that in the portrait, what on earth did he look like in real life? Not like Mark "soulful eyes" Rylance, I'm guessing.

I thought MR's performance was captivating but have to say initially expected someone more physically commanding.

I was thinking a cross between Ciaran Hinds and the late James Gandolfini at his menacing best.

flippinada · 01/03/2015 19:25

I thought MR was all wrong for it too, but his performance was so mesmerisingly brilliant I didn't mind.

sassytheFIRST · 01/03/2015 19:39

I'm really sad that no one liked my joke. I know it was a bad one but wasn't expecting it to be totally ignored... Grin

I think my favourite moment in the last ep was Ann sitting in front of the arrest party watching her royal table being stripped away to the bare bones. So loaded.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/03/2015 19:50

On the contrary, we immediately despatched a messenger to the king suggesting you as his new fool Grin

flippinada · 01/03/2015 19:58

Can I just take a moment to post this rather excellent sketch of TC by Thomas Holbein? I posted it on the other thread early on but thought it worth posting again, in case anyone missed it:

I also thought folks might like to see these paintings of H8 aged 18 (when he came to the throne) and aged 40 (shortly before he got married to AB) for the sake of comparison:

An aside for Sayers' fans: I think it's very cool that AB and GB were tried by the same special court as Gerald, Duke of Denver in Clouds of Witness!

The more I saw of the Duke ofNorfolk the more I realised Bernard Hill should have been Cromwell. Has the bulk and can do menace - I agree with James Gandolfino also. But sadly no longer with us .

Clawdy · 01/03/2015 20:59

Bernard Hill is about twenty years too old to play TC.

flippinada · 01/03/2015 21:11

I think Bernard Hill was just right as the Duke of Norfolk.

Tbh tho I don't think there was a bad performance in the whole thing.

Becles · 01/03/2015 21:16

Just watched the last episode. Excellent all round, Claire Van Kampen's music (Mrs Rylance) was such a scene setter and stealer. Glad that she put some new stuff in amongst the recycled material.

Who's full of snugger because she was given tickets to see Mark in Claire's production at the Globe? Grin Someone's on more Winkthan just a promise BlushGrinGrin

Becles · 01/03/2015 21:17

snugger smuggery
