Hi, thought I would start a thread. My Son is studying Economics. It’s exciting but nerve wrecking. He’s very independent luckily, but going to really miss him. We find out about his accommodation on the 27th

Dd not coming home till Friday. Has a school friend visiting and wants to make a start studying for her exams in January.
And she wants me to wait putting Xmas decorations up till she is at home..

ShanghaiDiva · 07/01/2026 21:01

Dd is heading back on Monday. She has four exams, I think, and then coming home for half of the inter semester break.

Snowstorm18 · 09/01/2026 08:48

My son is going back tomorrow but he’s not really looking forward to it.

Wronginformation · 09/01/2026 12:37

Sorry to hear that Snowstorm, because of the looming exams, or not liking Bath/course/uni?

ShanghaiDiva · 09/01/2026 12:47

@Snowstorm18 Bath is pretty good with pastoral care and tutor support if he is not enjoying course/worried about exams.

Snowstorm18 · 09/01/2026 13:36

Should he speak to his Director of Study first? He was not happy with the uni to start with and now he’s not happy with the course (some of the modules). As he’s not happy, he find it hard to get motivated to revise for the exams. I’m just worried sick…

Have spoken to Dd and she recommended your ds starting with the academic advisor and they may recommend speaking to the director of studies.
other options - book a student support meeting or speak to an academic rep - who attend student staff liaison meetings and bring up issues that the cohort may have. Speaking to an academic rep may not be ideal if your ds is looking for a faster solution.

@Snowstorm18 Bath has some pastoral care but isn’t as good as one might hope - I know of a student who experienced a major meltdown and they didn’t respond until it was too late even though they were asked for help by the student earlier. Please follow your instincts and make sure your DC speaks to their tutor/director of studies/student support. Be ‘that parent’. They are technically adults but are not always that good at advocating for themselves.

Thank you!

ShanghaiDiva · 18/01/2026 20:09

@Snowstorm18 - how is your ds feeling now?

He has decided to withdraw from his course - he is home now. He needs to decide what he wants to do.

Nearlyhealthy · 22/01/2026 12:59

Sorry to hear that @Snowstorm18, but a fresh start may be what he needs. Sending all good thoughts.

Sorry to hear that the course was not for him. Best wishes for a fresh start.

Good luck Snowstorm.
Feel a bit sad, as dd is really enjoying Bath. But different people like different things. And it's often difficult to know what a course is like till you have tried it out.
I used to send dc1 to a nursery. He hated it and when I tried a different one he loved it. No idea why. But hopefully your son will find something that suits him.
