Hi, thought I would start a thread. My Son is studying Economics. It’s exciting but nerve wrecking. He’s very independent luckily, but going to really miss him. We find out about his accommodation on the 27th

It is early days for anyone who is struggling to settle in and there are many societies to join to find your tribe.

I am so surprised DS has mostly cooked instead of eating out and has even used the laundry. His flatmates are really nice - all 30ish of them. Most are from private schools in London. He went to the local comp!

He has played tennis, badminton, football and gone to the gym every day. I think sports are a great leveler if it's your thing.

How great that your DS is keeping you up to date! We’re getting snippets here and there only. In a way I’m pleased because it probably means DS is settling well and keeping busy, on the other hand, he’s always been on the quiet side so would love more feedback!

We’re going to FaceTime this weekend and can’t wait to talk to him!

Private school kids get a bad reputation and this is why DS avoided Durham and Edinburgh where all the kids in his year whom he found irritating have all gone. Most of them are nice!

DS is saying that the on site co op has a limited supply of fresh vegetables. Has anyone organised a supermarket delivery yet? Do you think the vans can go right to the Halls or would they have to stay in the car park. The bus into Bath and back is £5 so a delivery charge would be cheaper if they book the right slot.

Dd has a regular delivery from Tesco (she is year two, but on campus again due to a health condition) and I believe they come to the building and it’s definitely easier than dragging everything from the city centre. Re buses- Dd said last year you had free bus travel for the month of your birthday so worth checking that is still the case.

Wronginformation · 27/09/2025 13:19

Yes, from what I've heard Tesco will drive up to halls but takeway deliveries can be more unreliable. Dd couldn't find the person in time so didn't get her ordered stuff.

Just for those that are interested, DD used to walk downhill to Lidl, very scenic walk. But yeah, took the bus uphill.

My dd is doing the same course. She has already moaned about Thursdays having a 8am start and 6/7pm finish 😁.

Yes, it’s quite the workload! Dd gets very frustrated when I reminisce about my nine hours per week timetable studying English back in the 1980s!

labradorservant · 28/09/2025 23:10

I sent my son a Tesco delivery yesterday for his birthday. I just put his number down and they called him. I put his accommodation postcode down but apparently they all know where to park! They can’t go in so just be ready and prepared to take it to the room. If it’s £5 a trip I might suggest his flat sorts out delivery saver.

Happy Birthday to @labradorservant DS. Did he have a good day?

Well, teaching has begun. Let’s see how they rise to the challenge of getting back into academia after 3 months off.

Yes thanks. He went to the ball and was very hungover on Sunday , his birthday. Actually had a chat on Sunday. Tells me his flat are all lovely, it’s still tidyish and he’s done some washing. He’s joined the gym and has been. Flat are even considering get a Tesco subscription. He has Tuesdays off lectures I think and hope he went to what he was meant to yesterday.
So sounds like all going well.

Your son can apply for a birthday bus pass where you get free bus rides for a month. Google it. He can use his accommodation contract as proof of address.

I think mine has Covid 😢. He says everyone in his flat is unwell but he seems to have it the worst. I think he sounded really down when I spoke to him earlier. When I think of it this will be his first time being unwell and not in the comfort of home.

Freshers flu/ covid .., it’s miserable being ill away from home. Hope your ds feels better soon.

Coldilocks · 01/10/2025 12:17

Oh dear. I hope your son feels better soon @NigellaAwesome x

HappynLife · 02/10/2025 21:35

DS has reported that he has a horrible cold (he insists it’s not Covid!). Apparently his lectures are full of students coughing away.

Freshers flu is indeed a thing! Luckily he does appear to be cooking healthy meals.

I have no idea about how he’s finding the course or the city! Hoping to meet with him in person in a few weeks and he’ll share more. it’s tough not knowing more about his daily routine or looking after him when he’s unwell!

Octopus45 · 03/10/2025 09:56

@HappynLifeknow what you mean about not knowing what’s going on. I have had three very short chats with my Son since he went. He’s always been really independent, but I would love to know more. He’s coming home for the weekend next Friday. I totally understand that seeing his girlfriend will quite rightly be his top priority, but still really looking forward to seeing him, don’t know if that makes me really needy

Dd year 2. I messaged her earlier asking whether there was anything from home that she really needed me to bring, as I could come over a weekend if necessary.

Meaning :I really want to visit and have to find an excuse to do so.
Unfortunately she said, "no thanks , all good, have everything I need " 😂

🤣🤣🤣sounds familiar!!
I’m pleased we raised and independent young person but would be nice to have a little more input!

labradorservant · 03/10/2025 15:40

My DS has been pretty quiet, until I started messaging on the family what’s app about holiday plans next summer! That did the trick. Oh and he needs a different drying rack. 😂

Wronginformation · 03/10/2025 19:44

Talking about visiting, end of Nov till mid December is the Bath Christmas market

What sort of drying rack does he want? Heated? Or a different sized one? Yes, I’m taking notes!

labradorservant · 03/10/2025 23:19

@ColdilocksI offered him one if those, much more sensible in my opinion but I assume he’s following the trend. If it means he does his washing I’m all in. He’s just sent a picture. It’s very wet and windy there tonight. I think he was on the bus to a night club..

Wronginformation · 04/10/2025 08:35

Leaving drying racks in the corridor risks them being removed..
Dd left (dirty) shoes in front of her door. She had to go out in indoor slippers to get her shoes back (twice!...).

Wronginformation · 04/10/2025 08:37

Just to clarify they are the "inspectors", not other students who remove stuff from corridors, fire hazard etc

ShanghaiDiva · 04/10/2025 09:50

My dd was in the quads last year and students had their drying racks in the lounge. Might be an option if it’s during the day when most students are out.
