Hi, thought I would start a thread. My Son is studying Economics. It’s exciting but nerve wrecking. He’s very independent luckily, but going to really miss him. We find out about his accommodation on the 27th

We've also got the 9am slot, but luckily we're about 40 miles away. Might take a while in rush hour though! And I think my daughter's on the 4th floor, so that might be fun.

Octopus45 · 18/09/2025 10:12

@jennygeddeswhat accommodation has she got. My Sin has got Westwood Quarry 5th floor

She's in Woodland Court, which is the east side of campus.

labradorservant · 18/09/2025 15:58

Hello! DS also doing economics. Move in Saturday but conveniently one of our good friends lives in Bath so staying with her tomorrow.
think we’ve packed. DS now gone out to say goodbye to everyone. Strict instructions to be up and alive and useful tomorrow.

Coldilocks · 18/09/2025 22:06

Hello - we have the Saturday 9am slot and we live 4 hours away so it’s an early start. If anyone’s DC finds a boy fast asleep at the nightclub at 1am, it isn’t drink, it’s tiredness.

labradorservant · 18/09/2025 22:29

@ColdilocksI’m sure adrenaline and beers might help him through. Where are you moving to? We are in that slot too. Hope it’s not too chaotic.
Have any of your children discovered their flat mates yet?

Coldilocks · 18/09/2025 22:42

@labradorservant Westwood. He’s been on the Instagram group chat so he has some names, but not the faces yet.

Oh - this is important ….

re ID - a provisional driving licence is not acceptable as a form of ID as we found to our cost with older DD. Fortunately she was only a 2hour drive away so I could rush down with her passport.

And don’t forget to give them their NHS number so that they can register with the campus medical centres

Thanks for the reminder about the med centre. We have a 3 hour drive for 11am - 2pm tomorrow so v civilised.

DS packed his clothes and tech today and that has been stressful as I am trying to work. He is last minute while I am a planner. No idea how it will all fit in my small car either. Fortunately, I had packed the kitchen, bathroom and linens ages ago.

Worse comes to worse I will get the train!

labradorservant · 18/09/2025 22:59

@Coldilockswill full driving license be ok?
He’s done the GP, once he put in the right address and not the home one 🤦🏼‍♀️.
I do worry DS had completely missed his group chat. Ah well we’ll soon find out.

Coldilocks · 18/09/2025 23:47

Full driving licence is fine.

There’s a general Bath chat which your DS might be able to find. It’s all on Instagram.

HappynLife · 19/09/2025 06:07

We’re on packing duties today, I’ve taken the day off work. Leaving earlish tomorrow! Very excited for my DS!

Will your DC be registering with a GP in Bath?

I hope they all have an amazing year.

labradorservant · 19/09/2025 07:07

@HappynLifewe've registers with the uni Gp (if DS did it all correctly). Figured it was easier to help him see the GP as a visitor here than when he was there!
Heading down this afternoon for the early start tomorrow.

Wronginformation · 19/09/2025 07:34

Dd wasn't able to register with the GP till she was actually in Bath, but I think they get in extra staff during term time.

Dd in second year but we dropped her off yesterday, she couldn't wait to get back.

Someone mentioned busses, I think they have added an extra bus line U3, although not quite sure what area it covers.

Drop off at campus was quite efficient, we were directed by lots of people. Pick up of keys etc was organised while we were just waiting in the car. Like when you drive onto a ferry and have to check in, without leaving the car.

Coldilocks · 19/09/2025 08:57

The forecast says it’s going to pour down with rain tomorrow so stay as dry as you can, everyone.

NigellaAwesome · 19/09/2025 18:19

@Coldilocks thanks for the info re ID. DS is going to Wolfson. Arrival slot tomorrow between 1pm and 4pm. We packed on Monday, posted 3 parcels on Tuesday and they arrived at uni this morning. We fly out first thing in the morning. I think DS is excited but a bit nervous.

Dd started at Bath last year - absolutely bucketed down all day on her move in day! Loads of parents waiting in the rain for the cages to transport bags, boxes and cases or rooms. It’s much quicker to make a few trips to the car and back.

ShanghaiDiva · 19/09/2025 18:27

Wishing all the Bath first years a fabulous time! Dd is studying natural sciences and starting year two.

pistachioicecream · 19/09/2025 22:25

What is the ID for? We dropped DD there this morning but have no idea what ID she has with her.

HappynLife · 20/09/2025 10:25

Can I be cheeky and ask you about budgets?
I sat with DS who has a student loan to calculate how much he can spend weekly. Comes to around £115 per week. Is that enough? He doesn’t think so.

i am paying for his phone and his monthly subscription for the sport he likes, I am also going to give him extra for freshers week.

what does everyone think?

We are giving £100 per week, paying for phone and subscriptions, self catered. I’m not sure if it is enough but we are going to start with this and see.

HappynLife · 20/09/2025 10:59

Thank you @NigellaAwesome forgot to say I’ve also paid for the annual bus pass.

fannieadams · 20/09/2025 14:39

I was planning to give £100 a week which includes £50 food and drink credits. I am paying for gym, mobile, Spotify etc. We'll see how far £50 goes.

ShanghaiDiva · 20/09/2025 14:57

I think around the £100 mark is fine. Dd had an annual pass for the sports facilities which is good value as yoga is £10 per session so if you do a couple of activities per week you soon get value for money. Last year she spent about £50 per week on food. She doesn’t drink so nights out were very cheap. There seemed to be quite a lot of socialising in the lounge and kitchen area and there was a washing machine in the kitchen which was free to use. No dryer. Dd did online shops with Tesco so easy to stick to a budget.

Enigma54 · 20/09/2025 16:39

DD is at Bath Spa. Third year this year and she loves it. Full student loan combined a job near her home and her finances are in a good place. She budgets well, rent is paid on time
and we don’t pay for additional stuff like Spotify etc, DD pays that herself.

HappynLife · 21/09/2025 08:55

I hope everyone has a smooth moving in day? The weather behaved which really helped.

DS has reported back that all his flatmates are lovely! I am a very relieved mum today! 😊

Thank you to everyone for sharing your weekly budget, it’s reassured me he has enough.

Good luck to all your DC on freshers week!
