Any other medic mums nervously waiting for F1 allocation?

PiggyPokkyFool · 27/02/2025 09:03

DD1 was told they should be through at 7.30am and is on wards for 10 so is nervously waiting and hoping it will not be much longer.
Pretty crazy they could be sent anywhere based on a lottery.
Anyone else waiting and fancy keeping me company?

@mumsneedwine
No I wasn’t that much in debt. But I did have debt. With no student loan repayment system!
My dd is currently an F2, and looking for F3, she has the debt….. but certainly doesn’t feel as desperate about the whole situation as you seem to. Shes excited, applying absolutely everywhere, putting everything on her cv that she possibly can ( as I mentioned above). She has no social life, it’s all about her career, she lives it, and loves it.
My other dd, is qualified in an allied healthcare degree, and also has the debt. Still finding her way in her field, will take a few more years and more debt. It’s not just the medics that have it hard. But she also loves what she does.
My third said, “ no way” and is doing a financial degree. That market is also volatile with no guarantees. She will also have student debt.
And my fourth child, is refusing to go to uni to get the debt!
Who’s right? Who knows? I’d love to change the system but I can’t.

@Auchencar no sneering from me. I'd love to know how anyone could survive on £17k in London. I'm just impressed !

Still not sure why a fully qualified doctor didn't work as a fully qualified doctor during the pandemic though. Most medical students were working as HCAS.

It was five/ four years ago for a start mumsneedwine but I think the answer is: with great difficulty. Although to an extent the pandemic will have helped.

And with respect, your posts most certainly come across as sneering.

The start date preceded the start of the pandemic by a couple of months and the contract was in place. No regrets. Everyone was stretched at every level. There's even an argument - I suppose - that HCAs rather than doctors were of particular value during the pandemic.

But obviously I won't be putting you in touch with this young person to let you ask them themselves, and I don't intend to speak for them. Well, perhaps just to say that they're incredibly principled and I'm not sure that complaining about unfairness or things being tough is something they do.

Interesting collection of DC you have there littlemissprosseco!

My DC all have the maximum student debt, which is a pain, but they all treat it as additional tax rather than as a lump sum. None could do the jobs that they do without being a graduate so it's just another fact of life, however irksome.

littlemissprosseco · 11/03/2025 18:04

@Auchencar, indeed! They are all interesting and keep me on my toes.
My youngest who doesn’t want uni debt, and is currently working every hour he can on his year out, has decided he wants to be a commercial pilot! So unless he gets onto a sponsored scheme his debt will be bigger than his sisters!!

littlemissprosseco · 11/03/2025 18:07

This year, for British Airways, I understand it’s its 64,000 applying for under 400 places!
There are also a lot of unemployed pilots around apparently! But who am I to quash his dreams…..
All our youngsters have it tough

Most of those haven't spent 5-6 years studying and £100k in debt to get there thank goodness! I'm very happy to have only one med student in the family

littlemissprosseco · 11/03/2025 18:28

@HostessTrolley I get that, but if he doesn’t get onto a sponsored scheme the only option is to pay….. and all in £150,000. And two years study/ training

One of mine wanted to fly with the RAF but his eyesight was a problem - not sure if they've started to allow lasered eyes in now.

So many unemployed pilots - I'm amazed.

Best of luck to him. 64,000:400 puts F2s in the shade!

mumsneedwine · 11/03/2025 20:19

But those 64,000 applicants are not already trained pilots ? They are prospective pilots. How is this a comparison for anything related to qualified doctors ? Critical thinking seems to be lacking here.

mumsneedwine · 11/03/2025 20:22

@Auchencar I think your dislike of me means you read things that aren't there.

mumsneedwine I think you may be straying into grandiosity here. To me you're just a random person on MN who has a very different outlook to me. I would find it very odd indeed to either 'like' or 'dislike' anyone on MN. If I found that happening I would take a step back for sure.

It's about numbers.

Not a difficult concept/

mumsneedwine · 11/03/2025 21:10

See you really are a strange doctor. You don't like me which is fine. But your posts just become personal.

Numbers ? I can give you lots of numbers. 20,000 unemployed doctors forecast for August, £108,000 the average debt of WP doctors at F2.

Not sure how applying for a pilot training scheme has anything to do with being employed as a doctor ? Firstly, lots of companies train pilots, so other options are available. Doctors can only work for 1.
Pilots debt is repaid by their company after 5-8 years. Doctors isn't.
Pilots are paid a lot of money from day 1, doctors aren't.

littlemissprosseco · 11/03/2025 21:26

@mumsneedwine
you are seriously misinformed regarding starting pilot salaries!! It’s less than the current F1 pay. And if sponsored there is considerable clawback.

Auchencar · 11/03/2025 21:28

mumsneedwine please do stop trying to fabricate something out of nothing. I simply refuse to engage. I really can't get emotional one way or the other about you. You're just someone who posts prolifically on MN. We aren't in a relationship.

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2025 14:28

@littlemissprosseco BA pilots start on this

Starting salary of £65,420 plus allowances circa £14,500 (based on 800 flying hours per year) with annual incremental pay uplifts on a 7 point pay scale.*

Looks pretty nice to me. And they repay the cost of training over 5 years, they also don't work a 48 hour week.

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2025 14:28

@Auchencar 😂

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2025 14:31

Sorry, made me laugh you telling me I post prolifically. You are on here all day answering people. No idea how you fit work in around it all !

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2025 14:32

I'm interested now

Ryan air pay

The estimated total pay range for a Pilot at Ryanair is £45K–£65K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay. The average Pilot base salary at Ryanair is £53K per year.

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2025 14:32

Easy jet

The estimated total pay range for a Pilot at easyJet is £44K–£83K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay. The average Pilot base salary at easyJet is £60K per year.

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2025 14:34

Virgin

Not sure how any of these earn less than an F1 (£32,000).

littlemissprosseco · 12/03/2025 15:02

@mumsneedwine It’s not difficult to find.
You’ve posted experienced pilots, captains, it takes years to get there.
Of course pilots earn well, it’s a good career. But starting out is hard too. Just as it is for medics. That was my point
