Law at which?

240 replies

stubiff · 03/01/2025 14:57

Any recommendations for Law from (only) these.
They all have the same tariff, that's why they are grouped.
City/campus doesn't matter.

University of Nottingham
University of York
University of Sheffield
University of Exeter
Cardiff University
University of Birmingham
Newcastle University
University of Southampton
University of Liverpool

Thanks, in advance.

It depends what you're looking for really- personally I'd go for York because it's the only law school in the UK to use a Problem Based Learning approach and from what I hear, this is very useful in the working world. Law (LLB) - Undergraduate, University of York (they've a good video explaining it on their website!)

stubiff · 03/01/2025 15:20

@xmasdealhunter
Thanks. I have a separate thread for York PBL!

The Liverpool law clinic gets high praise from law students I know

BrickRedLipstick · 03/01/2025 19:30

Nottingham or Birmingham.

AsTearsGoBy · 03/01/2025 19:57

Nottingham or Birmingham.

caitlinsjoy · 03/01/2025 20:04

Birmingham or Cardiff.

I think the entry requirements might be higher as it’s not on your list but I’ve also known quite a few Leeds law graduates and they’ve all been very bright.

BrickRedLipstick · 03/01/2025 20:51

Nottingham is much better than Cardiff for law.

stubiff · 03/01/2025 22:28

@BrickRedLipstick @AsTearsGoBy @caitlinsjoy
Please could you qualify your choices - ranked highly, ranked highly for law, you know someone who went there, employer who deals with a lot of graduates, something else?
Thanks.

@caitlinsjoy

Out of the list, these are the two with a reputation among employers for being the most solid. Tbf none on the list have a reputation for being much more than solid. If you'd thrown Durham into the mix I would have said Durham and not named a second.

troppibambini6 · 03/01/2025 22:39

Sheffield had just gone above Leeds for law in the university rankings.
Leeds was DDs first choice. She missed it by 1 grade she was gutted at the time.... really really devastated.
Her second choice was Newcastle which was 3 A's. She got A star, A and B but the wouldn't accept that.

She went to Sheffield which was very nearly her second choice anyway.
For her being in a northern city was what she wanted. She's in her second year and although it's full on she's enjoying it. She's coming back to Manchester to do her bar course. She likes Sheffield for being a student but wants to come back as she finds it a bit small for her.

marthaisintheway · 03/01/2025 22:56

My sons are all lawyers and they all said that Nottingham was considered the best for law

stubiff · 04/01/2025 08:28

@AsTearsGoBy
Yes, Durham is AStar.
Sometimes DC can only manage ‘just solid’!

Liverpool is good for placement modules, offering practical application of law.

With many 'solid' unis, lots of law grads tend to stay on the area and practice there rather than move to London which is the trend for the top ranked unis. Perhaps you/ your DC should look at the firms/ chambers in the area of the uni and think about whether you/ they could see themselves settling and enjoying life there?

stubiff · 04/01/2025 10:06

@AsTearsGoBy Relevant point, but guess it would apply to all degrees.
A number may want to return home to do the post-grad stuff, then job, as mentioned by @troppibambini6.
As Law is so competitive I think DC need to be flexible. So many stories of them needing to get a paralegal role before getting a TC.

TizerorFizz · 04/01/2025 10:07

If you are looking for regional law, look at where the jobs are that she might want. If she wants London: Nottingham, Birmingham or Exeter. Even if she doesn’t, these three. However where you feel settled matters too. I agree that often lawyers stay where they went to uni or go home. There’s also employers like the CPS.

As I’ve said before, employers look at more than uni. @stubiff How many threads on law now? If she wants to practice law, what sort of law? Birmingham and Manchester are major law centres but all the cities and towns have jobs. She, at some stage, needs to decide what type of firm. National or local or commercial eg big London/regional names.

I was being very law specific there actually stubiff. It's a clear trend that students from local unis tend to join the regional firms and sets in that area rather than move to London where competition is much fiercer.

@troppibambini6 BPP Manchester has far more gaining pupilage than Manchester Met. Has she applied for pupillage and scholarships?

Can I ask where you are getting your information from?

stubiff · 04/01/2025 10:43

@TizerorFizz
I have mentioned some of these things to you recently but based on your first sentence I think you’ve forgotten.
It’s DS not DD!
Probably not London, but not impossible.
Solicitor not Barrister.

Threads - I’ll create as many as I like if that’s ok. They are all different. You’re the one who feels the need to reply to them all.

Tizer has a habit of turning a specific thread into a very generic one or things that are not relevant to the Q! Thanks

Er- my question is relevant to the thread. ? What an odd thing to say

stubiff · 04/01/2025 11:06

@Pinkissmart
It was replying to something that wasn’t relevant to the op, so by association.
I’ll blame Tizer for de-railing it by asking a PP about the situation they commented on!

Exeter
nottingham
york/birmingham
sheffield/southampton
In that order.

liverpool only if you want to stay in the north west

newcastle/Cardiff not in the running for me. Maybe Cardiff if you are welsh and want to stay there.
