Law at which?

240 replies

stubiff · 03/01/2025 14:57

Any recommendations for Law from (only) these.
They all have the same tariff, that's why they are grouped.
City/campus doesn't matter.

University of Nottingham
University of York
University of Sheffield
University of Exeter
Cardiff University
University of Birmingham
Newcastle University
University of Southampton
University of Liverpool

Thanks, in advance.

@stubiff that sounds really good!!
One more thing (and then I will shut up) no dissertation at Sheffield. Something dd was quite pleased about! Not sure if that's the same at any of the other unis your ds was looking at.

stubiff · 07/01/2025 18:49

@troppibambini6 No need to shut up if it’s about the course, Uni or city! Thanks for the info.

@troppibambini6 I think DD, at first, had a bit of a scattergun attack to get mini pulillages. Her choice was to have a go and get something but got more success than she thought she would. A couple (at least) were not areas of law she would do. A tax specialist! However all were unfailingly helpful. So they can help you rule out areas of practise out as well as in. I think she did 11 or 12 in the end and one was for longer than standard. Several were multi disciplinary, one was an immigration specialist and several were family specialists: money and children. They were rated from low ranking to rank 1. So a real mixture. She decided on family so it was worth thinking about others, but not for long.

TizerorFizz · 07/01/2025 20:44

So sorry!! That should have been to @AsTearsGoBy - watching football and typing!

stubiff · 08/01/2025 07:35

Next instalment (it's ok Tizer, will keep it in this thread!).

Any thoughts on (only) these (poss as an insurance choice) -

Lancaster (AAB)
University of East Anglia (AAB)
Leicester (AAB)
Kent (AAB)
Sussex (AAB)
Surrey (ABB)
Swansea (AAB)
Reading (AAB)
Plymouth (ABB)
Keele (ABB)

And a few selected others -

Aston (BBB)
Northumbria (BBB)
Nottingham Trent (BBB)

With some brief reading, Lancaster and Leicester may seem the obvious ones.

OP posts:
stubiff · 08/01/2025 07:37

And related to the above.
If, say, predicted grades are AAA, is it actually sensible to choose an insurance at AAB? Or more likely ABB/BBB?

TizerorFizz · 08/01/2025 08:11

For insurance, my DD just dropped 1 grade in 1 subject.

Although I know a bit more about London law, from those I would say Lancaster, Leicester or Reading. However most of these unis are supplying regional lawyers. For me it would be what experience does DD want. Leicester is very different from Guildford. Northumbria does quite well regionally but if you want the NE, then is Newcastle a possibility? Leicester and Reading are in the London lists. I’m surprised Surrey isn’t mentioned much. It’s certainly a uni on the up. Ditto Lancaster but that always feels remote and so does UEA. I think law is better studied in a vibrant legal area with local contacts in good numbers. Lots of things to think about.

AsTearsGoBy · 08/01/2025 09:08

stubiff my DC have always insured with a uni with the same grades as their firm, hoping that if they dropped a grade that insurance uni might be more flexible than the firm. So often unis do accept 'narrow misses' that to them it made sense to go for unis they actually really liked. If all else had failed they'd have re-applied.

(Probably worth adding that they also only applied to unis which they really liked so all the grades were the same anyhow..... That was on the basis that they only need one to offer).

AsTearsGoBy · 08/01/2025 09:15

Minor deviation alert!! Interesting Tizer. My DC was clear on the area of law so I suppose needed fewer mini pupillages. Your DC did masses but I see the good sense in it.

stubiff · 08/01/2025 11:26

The dropping (or extent of it) will also depend on the predicted grades.
If it's 2/3/4 Astar, then it doesn't really matter, because if they drop (actual) to AStarAA, they still meet the offer (assume no places offer 2 A*?), so DC can pick 5 top places.

Think choosing 5 of the same would be risky (in this situation), the same for picking the firm/ins at the same tariff. Will see further down the line.

Looks like Surrey has risen in the last few years, so prob after that report. But, certainly an option.
NE is an option (and as per the op, Newc is possible), so Northumbria comes into it as a poss backup.
Yes, re Lancaster, even in the north it's a bit remote (in terms of a sizeable-ish legal hub). Having said that, I'd be encouraging DS to look at all (job) options.
There is no reason DC can't go to Lancaster and work anywhere in the North (if they don't want London).

OP posts:
troppibambini6 · 08/01/2025 13:11

Dd was firm Leeds A star A A
Newcastle was insurance AAA

She was predicted 3 A stars. She thought that's was a bit optimistic though!

She got A Star A B. So she got the right points but not the 3 As for Newcastle. Zero flexibility just a flat no.
DD asked if she got the A after a remark would they honour the offer?
They said yes to which Dd pointed out they had effectively asking for A star A A for her to be accepted into the course? More than the original offer? They said yes.

stubiff · 08/01/2025 13:19

@troppibambini6
Will remember that for a negotiating tactic!

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 08/01/2025 13:20

@troppibambini6 There is no advantage in Newcastle over Sheffield though.

I agree about work after Lancaster but there’s no evidence Lancaster gets near Durham and Manchester in the North for jobs as solicitors. Other jobs aren’t researched as far as I know.

stubiff · 08/01/2025 13:24

@TizerorFizz
Maybe not, but Durham (in particular) is not in the equation (and Manc/Leeds, same Astar,A,A, prob not either) if predicted grades don't allow.
Not everyone has the option of applying to everywhere!

OP posts:
troppibambini6 · 08/01/2025 13:28

@TizerorFizz the advantage was she wanted to go there. She loved the city.

TizerorFizz · 08/01/2025 14:01

I think the better RG unis don’t need to be flexible for law though. I would say most are competitive courses.

@stubiff Surely if predictions allow he could look to the higher tariff ones? LNAT ones are the most competitive but if an A star is in the prediction, why not look at one of those? I agree not everyone can look at the high tariff ones but those with the right predictions can.

@troppibambini6 Your DD is Sheffield though? Nothing wrong with Sheffield! DH was there.

stubiff · 08/01/2025 14:09

@TizerorFizz
If predicted grades allow (which at most will be one A*) then yes, Leeds or Manc can be looked at.
What I'm saying is that I don't think predicted grades will allow that, partic Durham due to loads with 2+ A* - not worth it.
So Durham/Manc/Leeds over Lanc is a moot point as the former is fairly unlikely, whereas the latter and rough equivs is very much on the cards.

OP posts:
troppibambini6 · 08/01/2025 14:18

Yep you're right @TizerorFizz there's nothing wrong with it. But she doesn't like living there and as I said previously can't wait to come back to Manchester.

TizerorFizz · 08/01/2025 14:27

DH didn’t stay either but loads do!

caitlinsjoy · 09/01/2025 10:06

stubiff · 03/01/2025 22:28

@BrickRedLipstick @AsTearsGoBy @caitlinsjoy
Please could you qualify your choices - ranked highly, ranked highly for law, you know someone who went there, employer who deals with a lot of graduates, something else?
Thanks.

My response was based on the universities on your list from which I know graduates working in the legal profession (I am a lawyer). Without being too specific about my location I live in the South West/South Wales area and so my answer may reflect my geographic location (i.e. graduates from those universities are likely to seek jobs nearby).

Cakeandusername · 10/01/2025 08:36

From your second list I’d definitely say Lancaster and Leicester. Both went BBB in clearing for 2024. I’m a solicitor 25 years pqe with a dc yr 1 studying law.
Not sure what year your dc is? We put in a lot of time visiting universities yr 12. Some good on paper were immediately no from my dc. I’ve got a law degree and enjoyed seeing all the open and offer days, for the same course they all have a different feel and your dc will decide where is a good fit for them.
Have you visited Queens Belfast? RG and AAA and none lnat? I was impressed with their set up and impression given was they would take GB on lower if missed grade.

stubiff · 10/01/2025 09:44

@Cakeandusername
Thanks for that. Good to know about the clearing (although not guaranteed to be the same each year).
DS is in Y12 so we haven't visited any yet, we're trying to get a long list together.
Re QuB, we haven't talked about Ireland. But, same tariff as the op list, so I think there will be enough options there.
DS is needing to decide on whether to do an EPQ, so that can factor in to offers from some places.

I’m a partner at a top firm and I’m involved in recruitment. I don’t care what university a candidate has been to. The main focus is grades (to get to interview stage) followed by how a candidate presents at assessment centre/ interview.

Needing mum to do research on universities does not bode well for the independent thinking we look for at interview.

I'm the General Counsel of a business you'd have heard of, and trained in the City. I recruit at all levels (for both a paralegal role and a Head of Legal in the past year) and agree with this completely.

FromTheFirstOldFashionedWeWereCursed · 10/01/2025 09:57

FWIW, I went to Newcastle Law School and had a ball, albeit that it was an awfully long time ago.
