Thanks everyone for your replies about Lincoln - we’re not a medic family so don’t really know anything about what happens post uni (though gleaning some info from here) so that’s all really useful information. My understanding is if you need to skip a year for health reasons etc fhen you’d need to complete your degree via Nottingham. Her offer is from Nottingham university not Lincoln.

I totally agree with everything you’ve said and think it would be hugely risky to not take up a place in hand (assuming A levels go to plan). I also think Lincoln looks a good fit for DD, small and possibly more nurturing than the bigger unis, and a safe smaller city too. She’s not a big party person, but in her words just wants to find some good like minded friends to have a social life with. I think her worry is being in halls with people out partying all the time but hopefully they try to put the medics / healthcare students with fuller timetables together..

Halls at all universities tend to be fairly flexible moving people if things aren't working out. After about the first three weeks people start dropping out for various reasons and places become available so people can shuffle around.

My DD is a first year medic at Sheffield - happy to answer any questions ☺️

Thank you @2kidsand1dog ! I hope she's enjoying it! What is she finding are the pros and cons?

Agree with all said. Smaller newer med schools give far better training and experience - Manchester and Liverpool students get nowhere near the quality experience they once had. Plus for newer med schools the local medics and hospitals are very invested and put work into the students
med students usually stick together and a lot
of social events. It really doesn’t matter where you are. My DC who had the worse student experience went to Manchester which is supposed to be one of the best. He was miserable and lonely despite this.

Can ask if your DC who had a bad experience at Manchester was doing medicine, or another subject? I myself studied at Manchester (maths and philosophy!) and coming from a small school and more rural area, I found the transition to such a large town and uni really hard and whilst I came out with a degree, I really wish I had gone somewhere different.I thought it might be different for the students at the med school though.

I suspect my DD may struggle similarly (despite being at a much larger school and living in a pretty populous area) and so am keen that she finds somewhere she will thrive (whilst appreciating it is often the med school that chooses you rather than the other way round!). I love BSMS and would love for her to go there, seems like the right balance of things to do, but not too big and busy, but we are still a way off yet as she's only sitting GCSEs this year.

The halls are great - mix of different courses in her flat of 10.
She loves the course - they have early patient contact - lectures online but she mainly goes in to the med school as they do check attendance.
She was very poorly in the 3rd week of semester 1 (sepsis) and was in hospital then back at home to recuperate - this really did set her back socially and emotionally but the uni were great with her - giving support and extensions.
Lots of societies to join - she’s in the cheer team which is a massive commitment along with medicine.
Happy to answer any specific questions!

Didn’t do medicine there - languages.
None of his uni friends have stayed there and are also quite negative about their experiences there. But I’m not a Manchester fan myself so may have some cognitive bias !

Can you advise on accommodation please - any recommendations ?

Can you advise on accommodation please - any recommendations ?

My DD is in Derwent in Endcliffe - it’s a great location - opposite the shop and just down from The Edge - she’s on the other side and top floor so not too noisy.
With Sheffield you get to pick your actual room - if you’re going to offer holder day then you can look around the accommodation in Endcliffe and Ranmoor. From there you can pick the building you would like and then it different flats are released over the coming weeks - they can reserve a room and then see who else is in the flat - most put their IG handles so they could make contact before they moved in in September.
Hope that helps

cosygingerkitten · 09/03/2025 21:56

@2kidsand1dog thank you lots for the information. I'm so sorry to hear about your DD's severe illness last year. That must have been si frightening and difficult for her and you. I'm glad it sounds like the uni was supportive.

Plymouth offer just in!

medprocesspain · 10/03/2025 14:39

DS just got an offer for Plymouth 😀

Keepkondoing · 10/03/2025 15:29

Still waiting on Sheffield here, thankfully he’s got one offer so wasn’t too stressed this weekend after the flurry of offers from Sheffield on Friday.
Well done on the Plymouth offers!

Well done on the Plymouth offers!

Last year it took over a week to get all the offers out from Sheffield - very frustrating as this was my DD’s top choice! Good luck and hope he hears good news soon 🤞🏻

justjuggling · 10/03/2025 19:06

Yay for the Plymouth offers. Great news, congratulations! 🥳

Justlikingit · 10/03/2025 22:15

My DD is wsitlisted for Plymouth. She is one point off the cutoff. Hoping that means she is high on the waiting list. I don’t really know much about Plymouth.
She is pragmatic and staying positive, she said it’s not a rejection, but ‘kicking’ herself about what she could’ve done differently to get that one extra point.

If she’s one point off it’s likely she’ll move up as others don’t firm.We don’t know much about Plymouth except it is epically far away from us in Kent! Looks like a lovely place to be and a fun med soc though.

Definitely not a rejection, well done.

Thank you @islaoo just hoping for an offer to boost her confidence more, although she is taking it all very well.
I know what you mean about it being epically far away, we are on the Southeast of the country too

mumsneedwine · 11/03/2025 07:57

There are some v good trains to Plymouth. Direct from Reading & Birmingham (& Edinburgh!). It's a lovely place to learn and a great teaching hospital. 1 point away is v v likely to turn into an offer so 🤞

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 11/03/2025 08:40

So good to hear all the offers coming through. I hope all our DC's have some good news!

Thefatbutteredpig · 11/03/2025 17:51

Well done to those with Plymouth offers. Its a lovely little town and the rail links are good.

Hang on in there for those on the waitlist. Theres bound to be other students declining their offer or not meeting the terms of their offer on results day.

MaybeaMedic · 11/03/2025 21:12

First offer through here - Sheffield. Such a relief, she has worked so hard.

maybemedmum · 12/03/2025 08:01

Congratulations on the latest Plymouth and Sheffield offers!

MaybeaMedic · 12/03/2025 18:08

Thanks so much everyone, it’s like a weight has lifted off her shoulders. No news on offer holder days yet - will that come later?
