Will try to add old threads, maybe good for us to give an update of where our DCs are at

The implication seemed to be if people that accept a Sheffield offer then miss their grades they will offer to those with the required grades on the waitlist through clearing rather than dropping entry requirements? I guess they would want to have interviewed any applicants. Birmingham have given DS a AAA contextual offer if it’s his firm choice and he was wavering which was his favourite anyway so I think he’ll just accept the place that actually actively want him.

I think so, though they may offer a few from the waitlist before then if fewer than expected offers are accepted. I saw on TSR one uni said they might make some waitlist offers after the confirmation deadline for applicants in June. So waitlisted places will only end up going to those without any other offers.

I think in clearing you get telephone or online interviews. I imagine it could be scaled down from their normal interview process, and often first come first serve for those with the required stats to snatch up the interview places.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 28/02/2025 17:10

My DD was rejected from Keele this week, no interview offered. She has 1 offer though, but it was still a confidence knock. She is waiting to hear back from her preferred uni still.

You can only apply via clearing if you don't hold an offer - is that correct?

WeCantGoOverIt · 28/02/2025 17:17

Yes though you can withdraw from your offered place and enter clearing. But if you hold a medicine place that would be a very risky thing to do. Clearing spaces are fought over - just getting through on the phone seems to be a lottery if TSR is nothing to go by.

WeCantGoOverIt · 28/02/2025 17:21

Also not many medical schools even enter clearing and nearly everyone who didn’t get a medical offer or just missed their grades will be going after them.

Definitely worth a try if you don’t hold a medicine offer, you meet grades, aren’t bothered where you go, and are happy to take a year out instead of using a non-medical choice (if you hold an offer for that).

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 28/02/2025 17:39

thank you! I am sure she will keep her spot but just wondered. She is lucky to have run the gauntlet and received 1 offer. Choosing where to apply is very tactical! She had thought she would almost definitely get an interview from Keele, but was rejected pre interview BUT one of the others where she did get an interview was a 'reach' school for her.

WeCantGoOverIt · 28/02/2025 18:04

Glad she has an offer. I hope she can shake off the rejection quickly. Fingers crossed for her preferred choice. I do think there is an element of luck in the whole process but it is hard not to take a rejection to heart initially. (Which is why I think it is incredibly unfair that UCAS deadlines means applicants, for any subject, can be rejected on the morning of an exam).

Africa2go · 28/02/2025 18:07

Just to say - there is often movement on the wait lists. We were applying for 2023 entry and after med schools were caught out in 2020/2021 with TAGs, med schools had started being very conservative with the number of initial offers they were making and then filling from waitlists as offers were released / students didn't get their grades. There seemed to be offers coming through from waitlists throughout March & April (my DD got an offer having been on a waitlist at the end of April).

As above, there are one or two unis that traditionally have been in clearing (e.g. SGUL) with the intention of picking up students who do exceptionally well in the exams (Astars etc) but that is very rare.

Thefatbutteredpig · 28/02/2025 18:38

My son got a late offer from Newcastle around ucas deadline. Another kid at school got a late offer from waitlist as well.

UEA seem to offer out in an initial batch and keep everyone else on an unofficial wait list.
Many high ucat scorers apply here as their interview score is 50% ucat, 50% interview.

As students decline UEA, the uni appear to offer out more places right up to ucas deadline.

My daughters friend got a call on results day from a uni that rejected her a few months ago.

Bangor and Leeds were in clearing on results day in 2024.

Hang on in there

2kidsand1dog · 28/02/2025 18:45

Newcastle was in clearing last year too and a friend of my daughter got an offer from Sunderland on results day - good luck everyone!

WeCantGoOverIt · 28/02/2025 19:15

I hadn’t even heard of waitlists until last year. Did they have them historically? Or did they previously just not reject those students until the deadline?

Africa2go · 28/02/2025 23:25

@WeCantGoOverit I think waitlists are a post covid thing - when TAGs meant that the vast majority of students met their offers, medical schools (unis generally) ended up with more students than they anticipated. Then IIRC the government imposed fines for going over the number of set places for medics so unis had to find a way of managing their offer numbers.

islaoo · 01/03/2025 07:33

If you’re on a waitlist at a preferred uni but have an offer elsewhere, would you have to decline offer to stay on waitlist?

Africa2go · 01/03/2025 12:19

I think (happy to be corrected) you can stay on a waitlist whilst holding medicine offers until the UCAS deadline but after that, you would have to reject your offers to stay on a waitlist. I think you can hold a non-medicine offer (e.g. 5th choice) and stay on a medicine waitlist but not 100% sure on that.

This is my understanding too

@mumsneedwine and all others, has any of your DD/DS's heard from Queens Belfast post interview?

No, not yet.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 04/03/2025 10:42

OK on Student room someone posted that there is an offers holders day on 22 March and one in April (not sure if that is accurate though) so my DD was wondering if others had heard

mumsneedwine · 04/03/2025 11:12

We've not heard from Belfast yet. Would expect to b soon though. It's a long wait this year !

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 04/03/2025 13:11

Thanks @mumsneedwine your response gave her a some confidence!

Africa2go · 04/03/2025 13:51

@SoTiredNeedHoliday On the website there is a useful FAQ page for QUB - they say the 3rd day for interviews is 21 March 2025 and the final ranking (which they use to make offers) won't be complete until after that 3rd day - so the majority of offers will come after that - think you have a few more weeks to wait yet. And it's a rejection from the final med school today. DS disappointed but has 1 offer at his 4th choice, a long way from home. Still, he's lucky to have an offer at all. And now to knuckle down and deliver on the grades to meet that all important last hurdle. Best of luck to those still waiting. It's a nail biting roller coaster ride.

Miloarmadillo2 · 05/03/2025 07:24

Commiserations to your DS @ItsYourMoneyRalf . This process is pretty brutal. I’m sure the offered place will turn out to be the right place in the end.

maybemedmum · 05/03/2025 07:55

Sorry to hear that, @ItsYourMoneyRalf. Really good he has an offer though; hopefully he will find things to get enthusiastic about as he finds out more about it. And, as you say, now all decisions are in he can focus on the grades.
Finding the waiting tough here this week (and DD is lucky to have one offer already). I think early/mid March usually brings a lot of decisions, so let's hope we all get good news soon...

Its a horrible process. Getting one offer is a great achievement though. Where did he get the offer for - its likely someone on the thread has a dc or student there and can offer some reassurance x

No offers for my DD @ItsYourMoneyRalf and she’s putting in an extra year resitting 2 A-levels as missed grades. Rejected pre interview for one two others interviewed no news. She’s struggling badly. So your DS is lucky to have an offer and something to work towards
