QUB, Liverpool, Birmingham & Leeds -last two bit riskier as regards getting an interview & I know LPL hasn't got great offer to ratio rates but had to consider airport access as we're in NI & just where she felt she would be happy living for the next five years. Suppose it's all a bit of a risk but fingers crossed.
What about your own daughter?

justjuggling · 06/10/2024 21:14

DD has just finalised her application and submitted to school for her reference to be added. Eventually she went for Bristol, Sheffield, Southampton and BSMS. Keeping everything crossed that she gets some interviews.

How are all your DC getting on? Have they decided where to apply?

maybemedmum · 07/10/2024 09:15

It's hard for them balancing the strategic application with places they'd like to live, I think. DD has gone for Leeds, Manchester, Oxford, Newcastle. She'd be thrilled with any of them.

Fingers crossed!

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 07/10/2024 14:55

@maybemedmum - I'm sure you're aware of this already, but a proportion of Manchester students do years 3-5 in Preston, so it's worth getting a feel for that location, too.

maybemedmum · 07/10/2024 18:20

@NoNotHimTheOtherOne Thank you - that's a good point. We've been to Preston once to the football, so she has a very vague idea of what it's like.

Fifth option offer is in today! It's really brought home to us both how much easier this year would be if she wanted to do something else.
She's also had an email from Leeds saying they've flagged her up for Access to Leeds (their contextual/WP offer). All impressively quick, but I think that'll be it for speedy turnarounds!

Optimum19 · 07/10/2024 22:49

@maybemedmum - wow that's definitely quick. When did her form go in?
Best of luck

If she is eligible for access to Leeds has she applied for Newcastle partners? She needs to apply for it via their website rather than Newcastle flagging her application

Standard offer is BBB for partners

maybemedmum · 08/10/2024 09:01

@Optimum19 form went in on Thursday last week!
@Thefatbutteredpig Thank you. I will have a look at it and get DD on it too. BBB seems very generous even for WP schemes so would definitely be of interest!

mumsneedwine · 08/10/2024 09:45

Newcastle partners is awesome if qualify. But do need to complete the 5 day summer school so there is a commitment

Its easy to apply. If you search newcastle partners.

https://www.ncl.ac.uk/partners/how-to-apply/eligibility/

My son is in y3 med under a partners offer of BBB.

As mumsneedwine says, if they accept the offer, there is a 5 day summer school. Most of it was online. He was on campus for two days. Uni paid for travel/accom and food.

He met other medics there, was out on the town and had a friendship group before starting.

Let us know how you got on and if you have any Newcastle questions - please reach out

maybemedmum · 08/10/2024 11:08

Thank you both. I've just had a look at I don't think DD is eligible. (Her contextual factors are negative attainment 8 at school and Polar quintile 2; I think you need to be in Quintile 1 for partners.)

mumsneedwine · 08/10/2024 11:29

@maybemedmum think quintile 2 qualifies too

mumsneedwine · 08/10/2024 11:30

And progress 8 needs to score 41 or less. You'll find this on DFE website.

Or A levels average score of 28 or less.

maybemedmum · 08/10/2024 11:36

Just had another look and it does say quintile 2 qualifies, but our postcode is coming up as not eligible (even though I've just checked and we're still in 2). School is 40 progress 8 so I think she should qualify. I might suggest she drops them a message to ask.

Drop them a mail and see what they say

Perhaps take a screenshot of your polar quintile and school attainment 8 and see what they say

I thought you only needed to qualify on one category for partners rather than two for Leeds so fingers crossed

Let us know how you get on

Midnight001 · 08/10/2024 20:40

Hi, hopefully they all get interviews soon. Could anyone recommend a tutor for interview/MMI practise please? Looks like a minefield so don’t know where to start! Thank you

Sybill · 08/10/2024 21:44

Honestly don’t think you need to spend money on a tutor @Midnight001 - my DD used this book mainly (as well as other free resources she found online). She did a few interview practice sessions at school as part of the MDV lunchtime club, and also practiced at home by recording her answers on her phone and watching them back. She got 3 interviews and offers from all of them.

W0tnow · 09/10/2024 06:34

@Midnight001 we did some tutoring via medic mind and I think they were very good, though there are an awful lot of YouTube resources which I think do the job just as well. Google NHS interview tips, or NHS MMI interview.

Midnight001 · 09/10/2024 09:31

Thanks @Sybill and @W0tnow for your advice. DD has the book so she’s making her way through that. I understand what you say about tutoring but DD has limited help at school so I think getting a tutor might help to make sure she’s covering the questions fully. I will get her to look at YouTube though as that could be really useful and give an idea of what’s expected

We used medic hut and found them exceptionally helpful

Thanks @Thefatbutteredpig we’ll have a look at them too

Does anyone know roughly when Scottish unis interview? Is it into next year?

OP posts:
KielderWater · 09/10/2024 20:57

That is DC’s application away. Fingers crossed for the next stage. No fifth option entered. The decision was if rejected they would take a gap year and consider whether to reapply for medicine or go a different route. That might change before end of January.

Fingers crossed for interviews (and offers)!

DC was told between end of November and March…

ipredictariot5 · 10/10/2024 10:52

My DD has decided to just apply to three med school and to add in two alternative courses for sports science later. I wanted her to go for 4 as despite getting three offers and four interviews last year she is now a resit candidate.
but having been disappointed her rational is she wants to apply to one aspirational sports science at Loughborough and one more certain Leeds.
School
seem to think the 2nd PS can do and
directed straight to the uni
the positive is that as her ucat is so much higher interviews for Sheffield and Bristol should be achievable and if successful offer should be a standard AAA . Her third is Manchester that she loved last year, enjoyed the interview and had it as firm choice
hooe it all works out for her but she seems happy with her strategy and trying to stay resilient
