More northerners to Cambridge but how do you progress with this? Does this sound alarm bells for those in the south?

As long as we continue to reward both hard work....

although we have a taxation system that does not really do that. Off at a slight tangent but this recently published research by LSE and Warwick is a fascinating read https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/economics/research/centres/cage/manage/publications/bn40.2024.pdf

I’m going to read all these links when I’ve more time. Data protection protects individuals. Not anonymous stats as long as no small numbers are involved. At Oxbridge that would not be the case. It’s not a village primary school.

Yes, I’ve seen the IFS data. I’ve also seen that the areas with fewest grads in grad employment are Lincolnshire and Cumbria.

CGT is a tax on disposal of wealth. So some pay CGT and others never will. I’m paying some as we sold a second house. It’s a tax on profit so fair enough. I made one.

Not anonymous stats as long as no small numbers are involved. At Oxbridge that would not be the case. It’s not a village primary school.

But you have to factor in subject. Oxford home students from comprehensives - maybe 1000 students? Split by 35
odd subjects gives you cohort sizes of 25ish. A 50% survey response rate (grad outcomes survey average) and suddenly you're looking at comparing outcomes of 12 students which could well identify individuals.

TizerorFizz · 02/03/2024 18:57

@titchy You don’t have to. You could just do school background (comp) and give percentages into career sectors. You don’t have to do subject by subject at all. Or take larger faculties. Not all courses are Old Norse! In fact I think faculty by faculty would be good enough. Look at school data. Some grammars have very few middle achievers, but they are still reported as a percentage. We don’t pretend they don’t exist. But looking at the stats, I’ve no idea who they are. It would be the same with Oxbridge data.

but I’m mystified as to why northern students want to go home alL the time

They don't. DD went to Newcastle which is a two hour drive from where we live. I don't think she came home at all during term time. Neither did many of her friends. In fact the only one who did go home a lot was a girl from Surrey.

@PingvsPong

You out forward interesting points.

I certainly wasn't trying to denigrate teaching though I would argue the government has. The fact that you think possibly quite rightly entry into teaching doesn't confer social mobility shows how we need to fundamentally address the social and financial status of teachers.

So Mom and Dad are teachers and have a bright child that goes to Oxford and become a a teacher like their parents in a technical sense isn't a social climb but in terms of society I think it is a really good thing for various reasons.

Maybe we need more examples of Oxbridge grade that make real contributions to sectors that are in the public interest and not necessarily immensely renumerate or high profile.
