DD got 5.5 4.7 and 4A. So she's great at writing, not so much the science bit! It's not high enough to get her into her choices (although maybe Lancaster) so it's going to be a series of rejections and a gap year. At least better to know now and plan accordingly.

rosesinmygarden · 24/11/2023 11:19

@Waferbiscuit at least BMAT will not exist next year. A gap year could be an excellent idea. My dd is planning this if she doesn't get in this year and plans to work on the nhs bank or something similar to get more experience.

LaMereDuChat · 24/11/2023 11:20

So glad they have done away with the BMAT now - it is madness to have to use up application places without even knowing how an exam will go or how you're likely to have scored. It's a masterclass in how to create disappointed students.

Sybill · 24/11/2023 11:58

@Waferbiscuit so many med students we spoke to on open days were reapplicants and all were really positive about their gap year - more experience and maturity, chance to save money for uni and do a bit of travelling. It really changed DD’s perspective on it, and I think getting excited about it as an equally good alternative path is helpful (especially if rejections do start to come in) My DDs plan if she gets no offers is to apply for a phlebotomist role in our local hospital (they advertise for them year-round and offer full training) I bought her a fake arm kit from Amazon for Christmas so she can practice 😂

ipredictariot5 · 24/11/2023 13:01

Two interview invitations for DD from Manchester and Sunderland today if anyone is also waiting - they have started issuing invites now

Notcontent · 24/11/2023 13:13

My dd was very disappointed with her combined score of 11.1 and 4A although feeling better now. It’s such a brutal process!

Ib1234567 · 24/11/2023 13:34

Congratulation @ipredictariot5 , good things come in twos .

Notcontent · 24/11/2023 13:39

Yes, well done to your dd @ipredictariot5
it’s such an emotional rollercoaster

Ib1234567 · 24/11/2023 13:55

yes it is very difficult @Notcontent , which BMAT univ your DD wanted ? .

Notcontent · 24/11/2023 13:59

Thanks @Ib1234567 it’s UCL - her “aspirational” choice.

Fortunately her other unis are UCAT ones.

Savourycrepe · 24/11/2023 14:01

11.1 is a great score and enough for Oxbridge. I’d be surprised if the UCL cut-off were higher.

Ib1234567 · 24/11/2023 14:12

I hope it works out for her, UCL is wonderful .

Notcontent · 24/11/2023 14:16

Still waiting for Barts too, so hopefully that will come through!

it’s a pity UCL doesn’t use the essay for ranking as that was dd’s best part.

Mumofboys2006 · 24/11/2023 14:28

DS very chilled. Still at school and said he’ll check when he gets home.
we only had one BMAT uni down but we so far have only one interview.
Think he’d be happy with any of them. He really loved all although we didn’t visit SGUL

Sybill · 24/11/2023 16:00

Congrats on the double good news @ipredictariot5 - what a lovely way for your DD to start the week!

Thats a really good score @Notcontent and I would hope it’s enough for UCL, fingers crossed. A neighbours daughter is a 4th year med student there and has been really happy - very supportive staff in particular. Well done to your DD

Mumofboys2006 · 24/11/2023 18:19

DS section 2 score was 5.7 which is 0.3 below what BSMS require. All other scores fine.
Does anyone know whether it’s worth phoning admissions?
Just feels like everyone got lower scores this year.
Combined score was 18.7 (which is their scoring system) and 3A

Sybill · 24/11/2023 18:44

That seems really high @Mumofboys2006! I was looking at the stats page on the BMAT website and from eyeballing the the chart, I think only about 10-12% got 6.1 or higher in section 2 so it would be a relatively small pool that they’d be assuming would have applied to them. And you’re right, the distribution of results this year is more skewed to the lower end compared to last year, so should be a lower cut off (if that’s how BSMS do it)?

Notcontent · 24/11/2023 18:56

I wasn’t familiar with the scoring system of BSMS so just had a look - that is very high and skewed towards section 2 above everything else.

Mumofboys2006 · 24/11/2023 19:12

Thanks both. I will wait to get the rejection from them…it is apparently very popular and the graduates we met there all also had offers from UCL Imperial etc.

@Mumofboys2006 BSBS's cut off for part 2 is 3, not 6 - the 6 is doubled, in accordance with their scoring system. It is a bizarrely confusing way to present their needs and I am sure must put off a lot of applicants who think they mean a raw score of 6

@Mumofboys2006 How are you working out 18.7? Because section 2 score of 5.7 and 3A surely gives 19.4 BSMS points even before you include section 1 at all?

@Waferbiscuit That score is way over the average for Lancaster interviews in 2022 ( which was 12.6) so surely quite promising?

@Notcontent Given the UCL average interview invitation last year was 11.9, I imagine that 11.1 could have a decent chance, albeit I think their selection metric was a bit different last year as they used to look at PS (or so I vaguely remember)

UCASstuffiskillingme · 24/11/2023 20:31

Oh, there we go - cut off last year for UCL was 10.1. so fingers crossed...

Mumofboys2006 · 24/11/2023 21:04

Oh wow! That makes sense!
I saw something like that on TSR but wasn’t sure if it just applied to contextuals
