So where Glasgow Uni is 100% for entry standards in the CUG for Politics, not a single student on the course dropped a grade and all fully met the entry requirement or exceeded it. So how are the “easy” decisions made when so many appear qualified. Even Oxford doesn’t get 100%.

Out of interest my son has 2 friends both of whom work in politics at Westminster straight after graduating - both went to LSE - and were told the graduates from there were very highly rated - but I've not seen it mentioned here-

LSE will be DD's first choice, if she receives an offer. Places are massively competitive, when we went to the open day they said there were 15 applications for every place. But it is a lovely university.

Hello, @UniQuestions7

I am sorry you are fraught!

For better or worse, the attention paid to the PS is variable, because getting it written is not a level playing field. Often but not always Schools or units of admission that look with particular care at the PS will say so. Do any of your DC’s choices say that, or are you just understandably anxious because the deadline is approaching?

A certain young person I adore was a notorious procrastinator on this, claiming that they needed the pressure of a deadline to get the creative juices flowing. It was heartstopping but the result was a merit scholarship to a world class university. So there may have been something to the claim. Nevertheless you have my great sympathy

Crikeyalmighty · 07/01/2024 17:54

@poetryandwine the other good thing about LSE according to my sons friends was that both of them did both paid and voluntary roles throughout their degree that were totally related to the degree as well as attending masses of free talks and they had absolutely top notch visiting lecturers and talks from people still in politics from all angles. I guess the fact it's on the doorstep helps with that aspect. I do realise it's very competitive- but so are lots of these other top end Unis too - I would say from what my son says - both were always very politically motivated late teens - and already were locally involved. Neither just 'fancied it' if you know what I mean. Thought I would mention it in case people were dismissing it as'wont get in' -

Crikeyalmighty · 07/01/2024 17:57

@Poblano best of luck to her- as I've said in my subsequent post- with my sons friends it was just as much about their 'obsession' and personality as much as their A levels ( but obviously the A levels have to be top of the tree too)

Poblano · 07/01/2024 18:04

DD definitely ticks the "enthusiastic" box, she's done lots of work experience including shadowing both an MP and a Senedd minister. She's predicted 4 x A, but I imagine everyone else applying there is predicted that or higher.

Still, someone has to be that 1 in every 15 applicants...

I think there’s a very simple answer as to why LSE hasn’t been mentioned here - the OP’s Q was which unis have your DC received offers or heard back from.

So if people have applied and not heard back, they won’t have mentioned it.

In my DD’s case, she didn’t apply as we live nearby and she wanted to go outside of London.

WriterOfWrongs · 07/01/2024 18:19

I say apply, I mean didn’t even consider it. Her BF goes to LSE (different subject) and enjoys it but there’s a lot that doesn’t appeal to DD about it. Although she discounted all London universities no matter how good because she’s lived here her whole life and wants to go further afield.

No specific worry re the PS; just that the last one was excellent but of course Law-based so it needs tweaking quite a bit.
DC says they will finish it tomorrow 🤞
DC does now have firm grades above all the entry requirements for each uni they are applying to so 🤞🤞🤞

Crikeyalmighty · 07/01/2024 20:20

@WriterOfWrongs ah you are correct- I missed that (was cooking dinner at same time)

On re-reading the whole thread I see LSE had been mentioned on here several times, the first time on the 20th Dec. You just missed it somehow… I thought I’d remembered someone saying LSE takes a while.

WriterOfWrongs · 08/01/2024 19:36

@Calmmumnot DD got an offer from Nottingham this evening! She’s very happy, it’s the one she wanted most out of the five. Still got two yays or nays to come.

zigzag716746zigzag · 08/01/2024 20:49

@WriterOfWrongs great news! 🙂

WriterOfWrongs · 08/01/2024 21:25

Thanks Zig. DD became very poorly during year 12 and had to take a year out to get better. So I’m very proud that’s she’s now healthy and worked so hard to be in a position to submit to where she wants for ‘24.

I may well be at a Nott’s offer day in the future with the OP and @Tenpastseven , exciting Grin

Tenpastseven · 08/01/2024 21:32

Congrats @WriterOfWrongs WriterofWrongs! What did your DD like about Nottingham? We haven't visited at all yet and it was a last minute add - booked onto offer holder day on 21 Feb....

DS's 1st choice is Bristol but I think it's a long shot. Has anyone else other than @Darrellstclares received an offer?

Calmmumnot · 09/01/2024 02:12

Fantastic news! So happy for her. X @WriterOfWrongs

That's great!
UCAS to be submitted in the next couple of days here. We had a horrible time last year with uni applications for many reasons and really hoping this year will be different.

TizerorFizz · 09/01/2024 11:16

@UniQuestions7 Was it your DD who wanted to study law?

LuciusMalfoysBestSneer · 09/01/2024 14:32

Yes! You've got a good memory.
Now applying for IR/ politics and IR.

@UniQuestions7 Im sure she realises she can convert to law if she is still interested after 3 years. DD did 4 years MFL and still wanted to be a lawyer. Additional strings to your bow never hurts. Was it Bristol she liked? I just remembered the IB issue!

Yes, indeed. Is your DD a lawyer now? Im glad it all worked out for her.

Butterfly44 · 10/01/2024 05:08

Politics/IR here too. Nottingham currently favourite and has made offer. One of her A levels she's predicted B but in all honesty thinks she will get a C and expect if so she'll be rejected. She's stressing whether to firm or put lower grade choices instead.

TizerorFizz · 10/01/2024 14:34

@UniQuestions7 Yes. DD did MFL degree then converted to law. Is now a barrister. It takes a bit longer but your first degree, as long as it’s academic, is no barrier. Just go to the best university you can and get a decent cv together.
