Here's a link to the short courses coming up at Kingston www.kingston.ac.uk/courses/find-a-course/short-courses/faculty-listings/1-kingston-school-of-art/

My DD did the foundation prep 2 years ago and loved it/ found it super useful. But I think it was @mondaytosunday DD who had a crap experience on the same course...... (sorry if I've got the wrong person!)

There's animation which may interest some.

ArtGarfield · 11/07/2023 18:26

The course looks great. £800 is out of our budget. But I do understand that universities have money making strands so the fees could be a lot worse.

Pourmeanotherwine · 11/07/2023 19:16

DD accomodation offer from Falmouth came yesterday, and she's happy. She would have been happy with any of them except the shared rooms, and she's avoided those. We've booked a cottage for a long weekend when we drop her off.Just need to buy the kitchen stuff and room accessories now.

PhotoDad · 11/07/2023 19:23

Yay! My DD's advice would be just take the absolute essentials and buy other stuff when you know what is provided or brought by others! But then again she is in a city centre.

mondaytosunday · 14/07/2023 21:27

It was me @Localher0. But it was a change last year (she did it Icyiber half term) when it was run by students. She found it juvenile and a waste of time. Silly exercises that she was t sure what the point was (one thing was putting sticky notes around the room labelling them - she said that's what you might get primary kids to do). So I think it was a different thing entirely to what your child did. And if they do keep that format then save your money!
@Pourmeanotherwine we've just come back from a campus tour of Falmouth! She liked the modern campus but I was surprised how far away it was from Falmouth, and Penryn looked pretty but dead. But it was the distance that got her - Falmouth is lovely and there seemed to be a lot on the campus itself, but six hour drive (or train) from home was about three hours too far. She will still apply, but is on the fence.

PhotoDad · 18/07/2023 07:35

@mondaytosunday That's pretty much the limit my DD imposed, 4 hours max travel and Not London, which helped narrow the longlist considerably given that we're in the North-East!

PhotoDad · 23/07/2023 13:52

I know that this is short notice (deadline August 10th) but some of your DC might be interested? Comp for concept artists/illustrators in any medium, run by a reputable games company.

Thanks - I've passed it along :)

PhotoDad · 24/07/2023 17:29

By the way, we were in London a little while ago, and passed three different UAL sites on our travels (Chelsea, LCC, and Camberwell)! I had very little idea where the latter two were. DD is not a big-city sort of person... if London had been in the running, things would have been far more complex.

ArtGarfield · 24/07/2023 22:04

I imagine you went to Tate Britain and saw Chelsea? Had you been to Westminster to see LCC? I don’t know what is in Camberwell, Elephant is about as far south of the river as I go!

Are you NE or NW @PhotoDad ? Coming in on the train to Kings X your near CSM
and it’s a short hop from Euston too. There’s an illustration museum next door but I’ve never been as it’s very expensive to get in.

PhotoDad · 24/07/2023 22:32

Yes, at Tate Britain for the Rossetti exhibition (strange family...). Then our friends had booked an amazing Ethiopian restaurant, and the bus went past LCC and Camberwell. We're NE, so familiar with CSM by King's Cross!

ArtGarfield · 25/07/2023 12:39

I’d completely forgotten I want to see that. I’m putting it on the list to do this summer. Was it amazing?

I thought that it got a little overwhelming when you reached entire rooms of thinly-veiled portraits of his current love interest... but I learned a lot and thought it was generally well-curated. Interesting to see work by other family members, and paintings/drawings by Lizzie Siddal.

ArtGarfield · 25/07/2023 22:11

Thank you, I will take DD as she has shown an interest.

PhotoDad · 25/07/2023 22:15

@ArtGarfield It took me a stupidly long time to realise that standing on the marked circles on the floor triggered the readings of Christina R's poetry. I was wondering why it kept starting randomly 🤔 Do report back!

Spent just as long in the Clore Wing, I love Turner and DD could see some of the attraction. DS (15, not an artist) uncomplainingly did lots of sudoku on his phone..!

Localher0 · 01/08/2023 07:48

I'm back after a wee while. It's great to follow all the updates. I hope the ex FAD students are enjoying a break after their busy year.... @PhotoDad is your DD still interning or having a break at last? I've lost track but is she the only one actually on their degree course on this thread....? Huge good luck to all those waiting for A levels or Highers - it's such a stressful time .....
All change here again 😳 we went away for a weekend and came home to discover that DD has switched back to a textile design degree, still at NTU though (phew). I'd had a spidey sense this might happen and her rationale was that she was so unhappy with the outcome for her FMP and reflected it’s because she wasn’t passionate about 3D but is about textiles. I think she expected us to be cross but how can you be?? Much better to be starting something she loves and excels at than doing something she doesn't really want and then switching part way through. So - watch this space for textile updates 😬

mondaytosunday · 01/08/2023 09:40

That's great she's been smart enough to realise what she is really interested in @Localher0!
No A level talk last few weeks though I'm sure my daughter is very aware it's just over two weeks now!
MS treatment not started yet - really wanted her on it well before starting her FAD but it will now be just two weeks before.
They've outlined the course at Morley and they mention a four week stay in Seville or Berlin which would be amazing. All paid for! Not sure if they all get a chance (only 30-35 student in the year). Also a pre-course assignment to show her summer experiences in book form. She's going to do three flip books (to link with her interest in animation). But, you know, very easy to procrastinate...
Hope all others are enjoying the break - could do with a bit more sun!

ArtGarfield · 01/08/2023 12:23

I’d love to hear more about the Morley FAD-all details appreciated. Do the cohort know who they ware studying with?Four weeks abroad and paid for sounds out of this world. The UAL course is getting less appealing.

PhotoDad · 01/08/2023 13:58

Good decision by your DD, @Localher0! Yes, AFAIK I'm the only person here with a current student, so I'm a bit of a gatecrasher. There doesn't seem to be a support thread for her cohort of artists/designers (there is one for the general cohort, and it's lovely). She finished her internship and even got a bonus; she's now spending a few weeks doing Nothing (which translates to doing her own art projects including some stop-motion and digital animations, and writing/illustrating her own stories. I'm sure that many of you are familiar with that).

DW and DS are currently away for the World Championships of his sport so it's very quiet here, and I am doing as little as possible for the next week. (I'm a teacher.)

mondaytosunday · 06/08/2023 12:16

Ok so like your opinions on this.
Out of curiousity I was checking out Clearing and found out that almost ALL the universities my daughter is considering applying to have their animation courses in it! Only one that doesn't is University of Hertfordshire (UAL doesn't either).
So AUB, Falmouth, BU, ARU, UWE, KU, UCA, Ravensbourne, Teeside - the lot.
I know that a portfolio would still be required but I'm surprised that these so called competitive course are in clearing - or am I not understanding why they would be?
UCA did say they try and give most applicants a place or recommend a foundation course (which they no longer offer). But does this devalue the courses? I thought these courses had far more applicants than places.

PhotoDad · 06/08/2023 12:44

I have never understood that about Clearing, @mondaytosunday! I work as a teacher and I've gone through many results days. Often very good courses (outside of art/design) appear in Clearing and then are filled almost instantly on 17th August and vanish by lunchtime. I suspect that many universities hold literally a couple of places just in case someone stellar applies (having had second thoughts about first choice uni, maybe?)

Soma · 06/08/2023 13:18

@mondaytosunday I also suspect that are more late applicants for art because the portfolio requirements are so complicated and high. I noticed fine art was available in clearing at some very popular places including Kingston, Chelsea and Brighton, at Brighton it was the printing / painting pathways. Also think UCA offer an integrated foundation year (Year 0) on a lot of their courses now instead of a stand alone FAD.

WhippyLongStocking · 06/08/2023 16:02

@mondaytosunday apologies if you already know this and have already checked but it is worth checking if the clearing places are open to U.K. students as some are only for international students paying higher fees.

luluposs · 07/08/2023 00:59

Re clearing I was also surprised to see almost all of my daughter's unis on the list, and dozens and dozens of fashion design courses which are meant to be hard to get onto, such as all the degree courses at LCF incl womenswear and FD&D (notoriously over subscribed). I too was wondering if this was aimed at snagging the higher fee paying international students, but couldn't see anything on there saying so?!

I will say though that we took heart from the fact that my daughter's firm choice, for which she needs AAB on the 17th (aaaalll the digits crossed!) was the only course I could find that wasn't on clearing. Which made us feel better about her relatively high offer, for an arts course. (Kingston Fashion BA...all their other degrees appear on clearing..,not hers!)

mondaytosunday · 08/08/2023 12:10

Don't see anything about international students, but I didn't do a deep dive into any individually.
Daughter STILL not started her summer project yet! Tick tock!
