Great work @Duchessofmuchness!!
DD has finsihed her foundation at Leeds, just putting the finishing touches to final show prep. It all seems much calmer than last (A level) year - good luck to all the parents and DC currently sitting exams!

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 30/05/2023 13:57

Thanks @Duchessofmuchness great list!
My DS finds out his FAD score in mid Aug, date not yet known. I assume on the same day or before A level results or those with cond places for degree will be disadvantaged.
Luckily DS is unconditional! His show finished on Thurs and I moved him back.home Sat and so now he is having a well earned rest. The last push was v hard work!

PhotoDad · 02/06/2023 18:32

How is everyone doing over half-term (if that applies)? I have a DS in the midst of GCSEs, and DD is now happily working-from-home on the most amazing one-month internship. It's a real boost to her confidence, working with a Graphic Designer for a real paying client (another department of her uni).

PerkyBlinder · 02/06/2023 21:36

Thank you @Duchessofmuchness for that v comprehensive round up!

Congratulations to your daughter @mondaytosunday for her Camberwell foundation offer and hope her last few exams go well. And great to hear @SpacehopperFace that the Camberwell visit was a success 😊

My DD has firmed MMU for deferred entry and put Falmouth as her insurance and so that means another UAL place will be available now for them to potentially offer someone else.

She's got one more English A level exam left to take but think she's really moved on already and is focussed on getting more work for the summer so she can save for travelling.

My eldest DD has just got back from her year studying abroad in California so we're all in a bit of a celebratory holiday type mood at the moment which probably isn't helping her focus on that last exam. Am sure all will be fine!

Hope the final exams and foundation shows go well for everyone 💪🏻🙏🏻😄

So glad it's working out for your daughter @PhotoDad.
Barely seen my daughter this half term. Revising most of the day. She has final psychology exam Monday and History Friday and final History the following week. We've been to the hospital for more blood tests, she will start treatment end of June, and is thinking of volunteering at a local charity shop (she doesn't spend money so not driven by that but agrees she needs sone experience working). Not knowing what side effects she may have and with a few open days to go to I don't think she's up for paid work where she'll have to stick to a fuller schedule.
Pretty sure she's rejecting UAL offer.

PhotoDad · 10/06/2023 06:04

Thanks! And good luck with the medical things, @mondaytosunday!

The internship is hard work but she is producing a lot of art, quickly, and has had the instructive experience of having to re-do things to fit client feedback ("Corporate" needed some things changed to fit brand guidelines).

First year results are back; two modules were Upper Seconds and the other two were Firsts. We're all very happy with that! Of course, for art/design degrees the classification is only really important if you want to do a Master's, or to leave the field and look for a graduate job, but aiming for at least a 2.1 is a good plan anyway.

mondaytosunday · 13/06/2023 23:12

And A levels done and dusted! OMG! There has GOT to be a better way...
She finally rejected UAL. Interestingly this is automated- and they have a 'why are you declining the offer' section with one option being 'UAL took too long to offer me a place' (or words to that effect). We had to laugh at that. Anyway she wanted to click a few but could only pick one, so opted for a diplomatic 'accepted an offer at another university'. She was second guessing herself til the last moment though.
Open day at UCA Farnham next week then her A Level Art Show at school the following day. I'm really curious to see her work all together and what the other girls did.

PhotoDad · 14/06/2023 05:23

Well done to your DD, @mondaytosunday! What a relief all round. DS is still in the GCSE process. he's done 22 exams and has 2 to go. (He is not going down the art route, he wants to be an engineer, so starting research from scratch....)

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 14/06/2023 06:24

Yay @mondaytosunday freedom!
DS is home from his hols and now designing his GF's mum's wedding invites! Still waiting for UWE accomodation to come back. Took.me 2 hours to get onto the website on Sat to put in his preferences. He was camping with no signal!
DS2 is half way through his A levels- typical that the weather has turned so hot. He's off to do medicine in Sept. App process also a night mare for that.
DD has 2 GCSEs left. We went to her GCSE art show which was combined with A level show too. Lots of portraiture this year in A level- DS year last year had a lot more architecture and print.
DD has won some sort of prize for art as the head of art took her off for a photo in front of her main piece from her transport project. She's not taking it further either @PhotoDad .. she is an elite footballer and starts with an U21 academy in Aug. That is a whole new area of pain too.

PhotoDad · 14/06/2023 07:17

@Lottsbiffandsmudge Isn't it funny (and reassuring) how differently DC in the same family can turn out? Good luck to all of them! (DS is currently considering whether to pursue his sport at elite level... but it would mean being very very single-minded and he is currently a bit of an all-rounder. That's a story for another thread!)

mondaytosunday · 14/06/2023 07:33

No kidding @PhotoDad - my 19 year old son barely scrapped through GCSEs and went vocational route and now has ambitions to become a firefighter (he's qualified as PT and fitness instructor but doesn't do that). No way would he have tolerated any more academics, nor is he very creative (though I think he has some talent). He is extremely focussed when it comes to his fitness and diet however.
My daughter is not only creative and academic, determined to get the best grades, though is currently thrilled that she never has to sit another exam as intense as A levels ever again.

mondaytosunday · 15/06/2023 12:23

Ok people - is the Foundation course (level 4) considered non-advanced education or advanced? This is related to Child Benefit. I also get Widowed Parent Benefits worth a lot more so would great if it is! But as it's Level 4 it might be considered Advanced??

Soma · 15/06/2023 14:17

@mondaytosunday I just had a quick look and I'm afraid I can't help - the information on the government website is as clear as mud. Do you think the college would know?

Soma · 15/06/2023 14:38

@Lottsbiffandsmudge is it okay to send you a DM?

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 15/06/2023 14:49

Sure!

Soma · 15/06/2023 14:56

@Lottsbiffandsmudge great, will do now,

mondaytosunday · 15/06/2023 16:25

Yea exactly @Soma - I always try and check things before asking on here!
MoneySaving expert said for art it was non-advanced but looking further they assumed it was level 3.

Soma · 15/06/2023 17:15

@mondaytosunday yes, particularly as there are both level 3 & 4 FADs out there.

mondaytosunday · 22/06/2023 09:44

We went to UCA Farnham open day yesterday - impressive! The amount of Oscars and BAFTAs their Alumni have accumulated is quite something. We managed to talk one on one with a just-graduated animation student and another international student who will do a masters at RCA in the Autumn, so the reality under the gloss.
The woman giving the animation talk seemed to suggest they were not particularly selective - that if they thought portfolio wasn't quite there they'd recommend a Foundation year (they do an integrated Foundation, which I assume costs money), which I thought was interesting as I would have thought they'd be quite selective. We spoke to the film department head who gave the main talk and was full of enthusiasm, as were the other faculty there - they all seemed to be enjoying the day (not just there because they 'had' to be).
Farnham is lovely too (and close to London which I'd be happy about for the occasional visit).
AUB in ten days.

mondaytosunday · 26/06/2023 16:29

My daughter is doing a spreadsheet pros and cons for unis. She's now thrown in Teeside - which I only vaguely heard of but a quick Google and it ranks highly for Animation. Another long distance uni (🙄). Anyone know anything about it? I know the crime rate is relatively high and that it's a campus uni but not much else. The course description looks really good.

PhotoDad · 26/06/2023 18:13

I have a friend who works at Teeside Uni (although not in an art/design subject). It's got a decent rep, and cheap accommodation, but I understand that the uni campus is a little island in the midst of a pretty rough area.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 10/07/2023 14:02

After a tense wait (nearly a month after applying!) DS has his accomodatio booked for UWE. he is allowing himself to get a little bit excited now!

luluposs · 11/07/2023 10:51

@Lottsbiffandsmudge a relief! Accommodation is my big worry too! Daughter needs top grades for her firm, for which she has now also, thankfully, got halls sorted. However should she not make the points (a definite possibility) she has nowhere to live for her insurance, in the most expensive and over priced, over sought part of the country! Otherwise she'd be happy with her insurance as far as the college & course as has excellent reputation. But I'm petrified she'll end up with nowhere to live, and the only halls they have access to are ridiculously unaffordable!

PhotoDad · 11/07/2023 10:52

Accommodation is at a real premium at the moment so I hope that everything turns out well!
