Clearing is always odd. You might well find that those courses disappear early on results day (or even before). It seems that a lot of universities like to keep a couple of places open for whatever reason, even on competitive courses.

PhotoDad · 16/08/2023 17:51

Good luck everyone getting A level results tomorrow! I'll be in school all day. I'm so glad in retrospect that my DD got an unconditional offer last year, I genuinely don't know how I could have helped her with clearing (if needed) while doing my job on Results Day.

Soma · 16/08/2023 21:38

@PhotoDad wearing your teacher's hat, could you answer a question please? Do the Cambridge International Exams (CIE) provisional grades often change between results day and when the certificates are issued in November?

Duchessofmuchness · 16/08/2023 21:44

Good luck to all DC getting results tomorrow and hope those with conditional offers get what they are looking for!

Good luck to all DC tomorrow. Ds1 finds out his FAD mark tomorrow! (As well as DS2 getting his a level results (non artist!)) So a busy day here
Hope everyone gets what they need.

No, the reason that they're labelled as "provisional" is that candidates can ask for a re-mark (or technically a "review of marking"). Otherwise it's vanishingly rare for things to change.

A stars across the board here. She is feeling faint. Showed her results to the cat, who was, naturally, unimpressed.
Everyone on school WhatsApp just saying if their child got in to their firm - not stating actual grades which is what we really want to know!

Localher0 · 17/08/2023 08:46

@mondaytosunday that is brilliant news. Huge well done to your DD especially in the face of the challenges she's had.

DesignDD · 17/08/2023 08:49

Does anyone know where the grade boundaries for AQA are published? DC has got one grade lower than the original provisional mark for her design A level. Just wondering if it is very close to the boundary - and if there is any point asking for a review given its such a subjective subject? Other than that, she's happy!

OneFrenchEgg · 17/08/2023 08:56

Hi all you will remember maybe we had a bit of a relapse in health? So I ducked out to avoid making it depressing. My child has been offered their first choice! Not sure on grades yet but I'm over the moon for them.

Wow! Well done little montosun

Soma · 17/08/2023 09:24

@PhotoDad phew, thanks very much for explaining.

Soma · 17/08/2023 09:27

Well done to everyone whatever the grades, they made it through very trying times.

Okisenough · 17/08/2023 09:37

@mondaytosunday Well done to your daughter. Cats are so hard to impress, lol.

mondaytosunday · 17/08/2023 10:06

Oh well done @OneFrenchEgg!
@PhotoDad this question is for you: she is thinking she might consider an academic degree as well, but is that even possible to apply two such different courses thru UCAS? It's the one PS isn't it? Like apply to three art schools and two academic ones (course like Social Anthropology). She loves animation but with AI (or even without it) not the most secure occupation.
In the States you apply to universities individually, so theoretically you could apply to do math at one, history at another and art at a third and so on, which is my only experience of university applications.

Acinonyx2 · 17/08/2023 10:15

@mondaytosunday it's a worry isn't it - not knowing quite how AI is going to impact by the time they graduate. Dd is due to start degree in concept art which, like animation, is likely to be highly impacted - she does have the grades for an academic degree and part of me is anxious over her choice.

OneFrenchEgg · 17/08/2023 10:32

I'm not going to worry about AI - dc has a concept art place and i think jobs will grow around it rather than disappear

Acinonyx2 · 17/08/2023 10:38

@OneFrenchEgg I am always the worry wart! Where is he going for concept art? Dd is off to Herts.

PhotoDad · 17/08/2023 11:26

Congrats to all!! Just back from the emotional rollercoaster of Results Day at school, I can deal with the mopping-up by email.

@DesignDD AQA grade boundaries are at https://www.aqa.org.uk/exams-administration/results-days/grade-boundaries (reviews of marking aren't cheap but are free if the grade goes up as a result)

@mondaytosunday You do have to write just one Personal Statement. The options are to combine the two subjects ("Sociology inspires my art...") which can work really well, or to contact the admissions tutors and explain the situation. Smaller places (eg art schools) are more often willing to 'bend the rules' by allowing students to submit a second PS by email. Although the format of the PS is currently under review!

mondaytosunday · 17/08/2023 17:03

Thanks @PhotoDad. I don't know of anywhere that would combine them - it's animation. I think she is wondering if a degree is Animation would be as well regarded as a degree in a social science subject, even if the ultimate job has nothing to do with either (in the sense that a good degree can be more important than the actual subject studied). Anyway she's just thinking about it.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 17/08/2023 17:43

Ds got a distinction in his FAD. very pleased for him as he worked v hard.

PhotoDad · 17/08/2023 17:53

Congratulations, @Lottsbiffandsmudge DS!

@mondaytosunday I meant that even if DD is applying to Sociology, and Animation, separately, she could cook up a PS which describes both. "My two passions are...." I know from experience that could work. Art schools will mostly care about the portfolio, anyway!

Okisenough · 17/08/2023 18:06

@Lottsbiffandsmudge congrats to your DS

Okisenough · 17/08/2023 18:10

My dd also wants to do animation and is a bit concerned about AI but my view is that go with what you love and have a passion for first and if it doesn't work out then go for plan B.

PhotoDad · 17/08/2023 18:14

DD is an illustrator and is vocal about AI, but is going to carry on as best she can...!
