Medicine - 2024 Entry

Just thought I'd start a thread for anyone else who feels like me... Dd has just announced that she'd really like to apply for medicine. It seems pretty much impossible to get into and I'm dreading the process as the odds are stacked against her - private schooled, grades a bit iffy as she's chosen a language as an A-Level and it's hard, though she loves it. Anyone want to join the pity party 😬?

Yes we are in England so could be that. Although they were very positive when she called them a few weeks ago.
she applied to SGUL too but not heard anything.
It’s nerve wracking isn’t it. Their pain is our pain

Randomactofkindness · 13/11/2023 21:54

@Bananaandmarmite it is so hard and yes we feel it too - my daughter loved Dundee and it would have been her first choice but she ended up only applying to uni’s in England as they offer so few places to RUK - hope you hear soon 🤞🏻

Africa2go · 13/11/2023 22:32

@Bananaandmarmite I think the first rejection is the worst - I said last year that its the first time many of these amazing students are deemed not quite good enough / don't make the cut, and as you say, makes them question their other choices. If it's any consolation my DD was subsequently offered a place by the uni who rejected her - medicine really is a waiting game. Big hugs to your DD.

speedyhedgehog · 14/11/2023 14:45

@bananaandmarmite so sorry to hear the news. Its so hard for them (and us). You really can only attend one though so all the best with her other choices. Scottish unis are so tough for medicine for RUK because of the small numbers. Fingers crossed for her other three.

Another invite for Exeter today in December..This one is online. It’s all feeling very real. 😥

@opoponax I think you’re right re high UCAT / early IV being double edged sword.

Needmoresleep · 14/11/2023 16:17

You might be right. DD, with a low UCAT, had three interviews in March. The last scheduled interview session for each medical school. By then a lot of people had dropped out, presumably because they already had offers. Being late did not seem to affect her chances and she got two offers from the three interviews.

Also congratulations. And commiserations on Dundee. If it is any consolation F1/F2 places in Scotland are not very competitive.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 14/11/2023 16:24

I don't know about this year but last year Exeter's dates seemed random rather than in UCAT order.

Sybill · 14/11/2023 16:28

Congrats again @W0tnow, great news to have 2 interviews already!

Fingers crossed for rest of your DD’s choices @Bananaandmarmite - really hope she hears some good news soon.

Another interview for Exeter here, for January! Really pleased for DD - her UCAT wasn’t sky high but she applied according to her strengths and at least one has paid off. Happy that she has time to prep for it too!!

LaMereDuChat · 14/11/2023 18:15

Congratulations to all the dcs with interviews & sympathies about Dundee. As dd is middle of the pack (2720) we're not expecting to hear anything for a while :)

DS2 has received an interview from KCL for the end of November. It is going to be online.

Bananaandmarmite · 14/11/2023 18:46

Do the contextual interview offers come out at the same time as standard ? Dd is a young carer for her sister which had massive implications during lockdown/GCSE’s so has extenuating circumstances.

losingtheplot999 · 14/11/2023 19:04

Just wanted to say good luck to all the DC who have received interviews. Fingers crossed we only need one offer.

Groundhogday2021 · 14/11/2023 19:05

Dd received an interview invite from Exeter as well today. It’s for end of January thankfully. 😨
Sorry to hear about Dundee and fingers crossed for other invites @Bananaandmarmite.

Groundhogday2021 · 14/11/2023 19:08

Well done to you dc for KCL @losingtheplot999
I’ve heard that UWE invites are out as well today for end of November! 😳

W0tnow · 14/11/2023 19:37

Another IV came in. UEA in early December. So 3 interviews in as many weeks. I’d have preferred them a little more spaced out but 🤷‍♀️. Her other choice was QMUL.

W0tnow · 14/11/2023 19:39

I think so? My daughter isn’t contextual but she had to complete a contextual form for St George’s. All interviewees did.

Randomactofkindness · 14/11/2023 19:54

@W0tnow wow 3 interviews is amazing - did you hear from UEA today? My daughter applied there. Do you mind me asking what her UCAT was?

W0tnow · 14/11/2023 20:02

Yes, this afternoon @Randomactofkindness
Her UCAT was 2950/B1
Good luck to your daughter xx

Randomactofkindness · 14/11/2023 20:06

@W0tnow thank you - my daughter got 2900 B1 so much less - hopefully she will here either way soon x

speedyhedgehog · 14/11/2023 20:59

Wow nice to see all the interviews coming in. Congrats to all the dc!

OwlMother · 14/11/2023 21:34

Ds has interviews for Glasgow and Dundee, both quite soon which caught us by surprise.

Sybill · 15/11/2023 20:37

Brilliant to hear about all the interviews coming through - is it a bit earlier than usual? I’d assumed most would be letting us know end Nov/start Dec so very happy not to have to wait another couple of weeks!

DD just got her 2nd interview invitation through, this one from QUB for Dec - very happy

opoponax · 15/11/2023 20:59

Caveat that the med schools all do things a little bit differently but, from what I've read on the med application threads, the contextual/non contextual invites come out at the same time. Same with actual offers.

Bananaandmarmite · 15/11/2023 21:06

Second rejection today! 🫣. Kent and Medway.
So that’s 2 rejections and an offer for her 5th choice (Sussex - neuro science).
she’s not best pleased right now.

what’s the best way to go… year out? Or take the 5th choice and then transfer to medicine
