As a follow-on about assessments, just curious about views on this setup....

DD's uni started giving everyone from 1st year up, the '5th year exam'. So, 3 times a year all medical students do the same computer-based multiple choice exam of 100 questions in 2 hours.

Now, the rationale is for students to show progression over the 5 years, and since the average mark for 1st years is in the low 30's, that should be the case.

Im a bit 'meh' about it tbh - according to my DD, who has always been very motivated to achieve, what is happening is a lot of her peers are teaching themselves modules from years 3-5 to get good scores!! What is going on? Is this normal practice elsewhere?

@Millylovespuddles it sounds like you are describing the AMK test. My daughter has done this every year since she started and the pass mark for each year group is different. Very low in year 1 and no marks deducted for a wrong answer and so encourages them to have a go at unknown questions.

In later years they get negative marks for wrong answers. My daughter is in 3rd year and is glad to have the experience of sitting the exam multiple times before it's critical but they do need to pass each year to continue on.

She is finding she's improving a lot but she doesn't study ahead to later years work in the hope of getting a higher grade. Who has time for that? She's snowed under with placements and the required academic work for that.

Pepermintea · 26/02/2023 21:15

@Millylovespuddles this sounds like what my DD has at Cardiff. She always refers to them as "progress tests". They are a "difficult" type of multiple choice called single best answer. From what I know she doesn't look ahead , but does some kind of revision for them. They seem to get higher scores because of having more clinical experience in later years and definitely don't expect to get the same marks as people in higher years. I know that in theory at least she practices for this one evening a week with medic friends.

Monkey2001 · 26/02/2023 21:37

Exeter and Manchester do the progress tests like that. A friend with a DD who recently qualified at Exeter said that their marks tend to peak in Y4 as they forgot details in Y5.

Saw DS1 yesterday. He was amused to see an interview candidate arrive at the St Andrews medical school, driven by a chauffeur so fancy that he was wearing white gloves. We were wondering how a student from a super privileged background would manage with some of the things medical students have to do!

Peachy2005 · 27/02/2023 18:26

Monkey2001 · 27/02/2023 18:58

Congratulations@Peachy2005 ! Still waiting here, but waiting is so much more bearable when you have one offer.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 27/02/2023 19:08

Congrats @Peachy2005 nothing here yet. Agony.

Yes it’s her first offer, such a relief to have one!

Fingers crossed for everyone else waiting (it was issued at 18.01 via UCAS).

Huge congratulations. I love Sheffield 😊

justjuggling · 27/02/2023 19:35

Great news @opoponax and @Peachy2005 - lovely to hear of successes

No offers here yet. My nerves are in shreds!

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 27/02/2023 19:37

Someone on TSR said they spoke to Sheffield admissions today and was told offers would come out over this week and next. I am not sure we can do this every evening.... poor lad is trying to do his mocks.

Thethingswedoforlove · 27/02/2023 19:38

So pleased for your dd too @opoponax congrats. No offers for my dd yet - but her unis haven’t (that I know of) issued any yet. It’s so nervewracking but genuinely so happy for those on this thread with offers.

opoponax · 27/02/2023 20:30

Thank you for all the congrats. @Lottsbiffandsmudge I saw that on TSR today. The waiting is hard and unsettling. I hope your DS gets good news soon and that his mocks go well.

Wonder if it is a coincidence that @mumsneedwine is such a Sheffield fan that so many from this thread have successfully applied there?!

justjuggling · 27/02/2023 21:24

Lovely news @RockyHorrorShow 👍
