I imagine that will slow everything up, because potentially a few students holding an offer for place A but wanting really to go to place B, and vice versa. What happens if they only hold one place but still on a waiting list for others? Do they just not get an insurance place? I know that most places are AAA offers anyway, but I imagine some are more flexible than others on that.

Yes, GANFYD described it as a Mexican stand off - medical schools wait for eachother so that trickle down can start. And it is frustrating that people whose first choice is Uni A, who have an offer from Uni B and a waiting list place at Uni A have to firm Uni B if they don't get an offer by their June deadline. And it is unlikely that you can stay on a waiting list if you have firmed another offer, although I think Newcastle broke that convention last year.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 09/02/2023 09:30

Can you reject one at a time? So say if someone was lucky enough to be offered say B C and D but was on a waiting list for A, could they reject D while still waiting to hear from A?

Yes, you can withdraw an application at any time. Lots of people withdraw from D because they have offers from B and C. Also lots withdraw whilst on waiting list. That is why in FOI you might see top 30% getting offers, then half of the next 30%, dotted around. So people who are still in the mix get an offer if in top 60%, but only 45% get offers.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 09/02/2023 10:14

Thank you, all purely academic at the moment because just one offer at the moment would be amazing, and they only need one offer!

You can withdraw individual choices, and it's really helpful to the medical schools (and other applicants) if you do this when you know you're not going to make that offer firm or insurance.

Been lurking here and had so much useful info. Thank you.
It is looking sadly like dd will not get any interview offers. Thought we'd been strategic (all 9s GCSE, and 2 x A star 1 x A predicted) , but with 2610 ucat, band 1, it was always gonna be a struggle (bogstandard comp, no help with ucat prep, not a medic family...we have been on a huge learning curve!)
Just waiting on Leeds, but average BMAT, not holding out much hope.
As numbers UK-wide have been capped, we cannot be alone in this position.
My query is what happens with UCAS extra? and possibilities through clearing?
dd is prepared to take a year and try again.

So tough on them.

kackle · 09/02/2023 15:57

I can confirm Newcastle allowed people to remain on their waitlist last year even when they had a firm offer elsewhere. My son had firmed another uni and when contacted by Newcastle, was able to change his mind. Bit of a tangled process doing it via ucas though.

It has been brutal year. In times gone by, a strategic applicant could have got 4 interviews with 2610. However, as the mum of 2 DSs who were great at UCAT, but failed to get offers first time round, I can fully recommend a gap year!

Lancaster (BMAT) is usually in UCAS Extra. Last year the cut off looks like 11.2 - so could be 4,1,4,1,3A - www.lancaster.ac.uk/lms/medicine/mbchb-medicine-and-surgery/how-to-apply/#how-we-use-the-biomedical-admissions-test-bmat-in-our-selection-process-409970-1 But who knows what will happen this year! Sadly I don't think 2610 will be enough in Extra or Clearing this year for UCAT universities.

curvymummy · 10/02/2023 08:00

Thank you. still holding out for Leeds - wish they would hurry up. Very hard when others are now waiting on Offers!
dds BMAT is 4.1, 5.4, 3A (would have been enough for BSMS - but she only put 1 BMAT as applied before knowing results!), we will keep an eye for Lancaster.

Bristol hold email today. Anyone any experience with Bristol? Is this normal?

Interview was 31/1.

mumsneedwine · 10/02/2023 23:20

@kackle v normal. Just means you are good enough, but they just need to wait until everyone interviewed before they commit.

Is it normal to be put on hold like 11 days after interview? Some people on tsr have had interviews and haven't been put on hold / have been put on hold weeks after.

Just a bit woried about it I guess given that it has happened so v quickly after interview.

mumsneedwine · 11/02/2023 12:53

@kackle you'll go mad if you try and find a reason behind med school decisions. It means nothing.

I've had students be put on hold the day after interview get an offer months later, had some never on hold get offer, and also some rejected. I gave up trying to figure out their processes years ago.
Until you get rejected you're still in the game.

opoponax · 11/02/2023 13:47

@kackle DD is on hold for Bristol too. She's just taking it as positive as they haven't rejected her at this stage. DS was put on hold with them two years ago a few weeks after his interview and got an offer in March. His friend wasn't put on hold after their interview and also got an offer in March. Some are put on hold and then rejected. I don't think it means much at all other than that they were not outstanding enough to get an early offer but that is no big deal.

Bristol holds just seem to mean they haven't decided yet. Last year Ds had an on hold message from Bristol which converted into an offer at the end of April, almost 2 months after his other offers that all came around beginning of March. Bristol really do seem to take it up to the line. Hold your nerve everyone. It's early days yet!

Monkey2001 · 13/02/2023 17:35

UEA offer in for DS! Very pleased! 😁

Can't celebrate with him until Thursday as he is visiting GF in Nottingham and DH is away on business. With DS1 all offers and rejections were marked with Domino's and Ben and Jerry's, but DS2 might just want a heap of meat as he is a protein fiend!

mumsneedwine · 13/02/2023 18:58

@Monkey2001 that's the best news EVER !!! So v v happy for mini monkey. Celebrate without him - I'll have a gin in his honour (it's half term). V v well done.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 13/02/2023 19:12

Fantastic news @Monkey2001 . Is that unconditional being on a gap year?

Thethingswedoforlove · 13/02/2023 19:41

Soooo many congratulations @Monkey2001 . WoW emotional for your ds.

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 13/02/2023 19:44

Congratulations to @Monkey2001 DS! I think you deserve to celebrate in his absence too 🍷 🍕

Africa2go · 13/02/2023 19:48

Whoop whoop @Monkey2001 Maybe have 2 celebrations- one for you tonight and then another one when you're all back together!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 13/02/2023 19:49

@Monkey2001 - I am THRILLED to hear of your DS's offer. You've been such a great support and font of knowledge to applicants this year and last, so this is the Karma that he deserves. I sincerely hope more offers follow.

Haffdonga · 13/02/2023 20:22

Fantastic news for the Monkey household and so well deserved by young Monkey! After going through the long long nerve wracking waits and crazy unpredictability of last year's applications he's clearly got the resilience and determintion it's going to take long term (as do you @Monkey2001 !) Congratulations!!

Monkey2001 · 13/02/2023 20:30

Thanks all! He is very happy, it is his favourite course although he does not love the location. Not his top choice, but would be very happy to go there. @mumsneedwine enjoy that G&T!

@Unexpecteddrivinginstructor he needs an A for Chemistry - already has A*s/A for Maths, Physics and PE, so less daunting than having to get AAA. The only one which would be unconditional is Newcastle.

kk10 · 13/02/2023 20:49
