Bristol Accommodation allocation!

GloriosaB · 25/08/2022 08:52

My dc didn't get any of his choices and has been allocated The Rackhay in the city centre. Wasn't thrilled at first, but seems to be coming round to the idea now.

Where have others been allocated and did they get any of their choices?

Anyone know much about these riverside accommodations, particularly The Rackhay, in the city centre?

Thank you!

DS1 was at Bristol for a postgrad degree and didn't live in halls (lived our in Stapleton, but as this was 2020/21, quite a lot was online anyway😕), but the area around Queen Square seems rather nice. DD and i had a mooch atound when she attended an open day. Walkable to the university (if you like hills) and to Temple Meads station.

BTW, I wonder what the word above Bojo said originally...Shock

Bristol Accommodation allocation!

One of my goddaughters got Badock halls.
She is really upset about this because she got placed in the old part of the halls.
She has to share a bathroom and the halls are catered which she didn’t want
Bristol university’s accommodation is atrocious. One of my goddaughter’s friend is looking for accommodation in Bath because she can’t find accommodation in Bristol.
She said that she now wishes she was at Bath university

Maggiethecat · 25/08/2022 13:43

@GloriosaB - Dd got her second choice - Culver House and I wonder if it's because she was on a gap year and if they process these students first seeing as they don't have to wait for results?

We looked at riverside halls when we visited and although some of the older ones didn't look very nice from outside I'm told that they are nicer inside. On the positive, seems that they're in the centre for places to socialise.

@Lampzade - sorry that your Gd is not happy with her placement. Hopefully, as suggested by others with dc who have gone been there, they'll settle in and make friends and the accommodation won't matter so much. It's only for 1 year.

Is Gd's friend first year? Did she not have a guaranteed place?

TizerorFizz · 25/08/2022 18:09

@Lampzade Badock is perfectly ok!!! My DD, years ago, had a shared room, shared bathroom snd catered. Just like school and it’s really no hardship. She will be fine. ask to move after Christmas if she’s not happy!

If Bristol is not first choice it’s long been an issue over halls. First choice tend to get somewhere. DD was insurance and took what was offered. Accommodations office try and help. Too many are going to Bristol!’

NCTDN · 25/08/2022 21:53

DD got her first choice of Wills as have many others she's met on a what's app group chat. However there's others on the same chat who didn't want catered or SB and got there!
She wouldn't risk putting Bristol as insurance in case she never got accommodation.

NCTDN · 25/08/2022 22:26

Is the Rackhay owned by the uni?

GloriosaB · 25/08/2022 23:30

I'm not sure. I think it's one of the Unite halls.

Bristol was ds' first choice, so we were hopeful he'd get one of his choices.
We know of a girl who has got catered and she wanted self catered 🙄

My son was allocated this exact accommodation. On the plus side although they look shabby at first the rooms are large and good for socialising.

As there are communal bathrooms/showers and pantry they are cleaned daily by professional cleaners who were lovely to the students.

The catered option meant from day 1 they ate together in groups again a good way to make friends.

My son has had the time of his life in y1 at Bristol and loved being in Badock.

TizerorFizz · 25/08/2022 23:48

@GloriosaB
Catered is not usually 100% catered. Some meals are excluded. It’s a good way to make friends. It’s only for a year and cooking on your own is not always fun.

Sharing a bathroom is not as bad as you think. DS was in a flat of 10 (different uni) last year and it had 2 large bathrooms and 2 separate toilets. All kept clean - was fine.

This year DD has got her first choice accom at Bristol - Hiatt Baker self catering. I think the rooms look nice and am sure she'll have a brilliant time. Though not sure where I'll find small double fitted sheets!

purplepandas · 26/08/2022 07:26

Turtle Doves have an extra 10 percent off above the 30 percent sale. XTRA10.

I think someone posted about getting gloves for £10 on the previous thread but can't see how. Any ideas at all please? I would love to buy some more for presents this year.

purplepandas · 26/08/2022 07:27

Agh, so sorry, wrong thread. I do know Bristol but not halls sadly.

@1Wanda1 , Dunelm are the best for small double sheets I find (both of my children have that size at home), more choice online but I can usually find some in store. They also stock a small double mattress protector.
Amazon also sell that size, but I find the quality very poor

GloriosaB · 26/08/2022 08:33

Yes, I was going to say I have found small
Double sheets in Dunelm. Also got a small double mattress topper from Very.

@familyissues12345 thank you!

Maggiethecat · 26/08/2022 09:18

Is a small double the same as a 3/4 bed?

@familyissues12345 - thanks

TizerorFizz · 26/08/2022 13:04

DD just took spare double fitted sheets from home and tucked them in.

Maggiethecat · 30/08/2022 13:56

Looking at Airbnb for few days while moving Dd into halls near Park St in 2 weeks (hotels are eye wateringly pricey).

There is an okish place in Redlands and a very nice place in Knowle (similar cost). Think Redlands would be easier to navigate but wonder if Knowle would be too difficult to be worth considering - would anyone have an idea?

catndogslife · 30/08/2022 17:07

@Maggiethecat Redland would be closer, but unless there is off street parking at the Air BNB, there are parking restrictions in Redland (it's part of an RPZ) so you will probably need to pay to park (unless parking permit provided).
Knowle is doable and no parking permits are needed.
If you send me a pm, I may be able to help more.

Maggiethecat · 30/08/2022 18:01

@catndogslife - thanks, will do.

GoldenTobes · 30/08/2022 18:08

My daughter didn't get any of her choices either. She would have liked en-suite and self catered. She is in hiatt baker half-board side, which seem to be quite old rooms too. And a lot sharing a bathroom. Not happy at first but is now feeling ok about it.

GoldenTobes · 30/08/2022 18:11

To add, Bristol was her first choice too
