Bristol Accommodation allocation!

GloriosaB · 25/08/2022 08:52

My dc didn't get any of his choices and has been allocated The Rackhay in the city centre. Wasn't thrilled at first, but seems to be coming round to the idea now.

Where have others been allocated and did they get any of their choices?

Anyone know much about these riverside accommodations, particularly The Rackhay, in the city centre?

Thank you!

@GoldenTobes
When she moves in it will be fine. Does she share a bathroom at home? Mine didn’t but did at school so was used to it. As students have lectures at differing start times, bathroom sharing works out ok and you definitely make friends over meals. DDs room in Wills was original 1930s furniture! Hiatt Baker isn’t that old!

GoldenTobes · 30/08/2022 19:05

@TizerorFizz she just shares with brother at home. I think it will encourage a change of habits as in, showers will need to be a lot quicker!!Smile. Also she does have a sink so that is something. I get your point about older rooms in Wills hall!! If you're sharing would you know that beforehand on the accommodation offer? I remember when I was at university some 30 years ago not knowing I was in a shared room until I arrived and discovered someone already there and moved in.

I think she seems happy with being catered now as one less thing to worry about and will need to self cater in yrs2 &3 anyway.

TizerorFizz · 30/08/2022 19:14

@GoldenTobes
I think I said earlier that as DD was insurance (12 years ago!) she initially was allocated nothing. She was asked to go to a “find a house day” organised by the accommodations office but we were all abroad on holiday. So, as that was impossible, she was offered shared in Wills and she grabbed it. That was sharing a linked room - the other girl walked diagonally through DDs room to get to hers. However it was better than a house share and it was a hall! DD was very happy! Your DD will be fine with HB. It’s not an exact science - room allocation. She will meet others and at least she has a sink. DD had a fireplace!

One of my goddaughters got Badock halls.
She is really upset about this because she got placed in the old part of the halls.
She has to share a bathroom and the halls are catered which she didn’t want
Bristol university’s accommodation is atrocious. One of my goddaughter’s friend is looking for accommodation in Bath because she can’t find accommodation in Bristol.
She said that she now wishes she was at Bath university

I was in Badcock many years ago. It was great. The way the rooms are laid out with shared facilities is really sociable and having someone cook your breakfast and evening meal is priceless.

NCTDN · 30/08/2022 19:22

@GoldenTobes I think of hiatt baker as new compared to all the others!!
I'm just hoping the food is ok Wink

NCTDN · 30/08/2022 19:23

Do you think the catered meals will start on the first moving in day?

bigTillyMint · 30/08/2022 19:26

@GloriosaB, my DD was (5years ago now!) in the one next to Rackhay (friend was in there) and the rooms are a good size with small doubles and big wardrobe, decent sized living room/kitchen with plenty of cooking space/fridges, etc and 2 bathrooms. And a fabulous location on the waterfront with loads of bars/clubs, etc close by.

What’s not to like?!

gogohmm · 30/08/2022 19:30

Anyone bringing kids down and struggling to find a hotel - try Portishead, the poachers pub for instance. Nice owners

TizerorFizz · 30/08/2022 20:47

@NCTDN
I recall there was an evening meal when they moved in.

It’s possible to stay bearish to Bristol and pay less. You don’t need to be at the halls at very early.

NCTDN · 03/09/2022 07:42

Are any of you getting insurance on top of what is provided by uni?

TizerorFizz · 03/09/2022 09:09

Check what the insurance actually covers. How expensive is the laptop and phone to replace? Are they covered away from the halls? They take them everywhere! What about clothes? Other items of some value which might be above the limit or taken out, eg a bike.. Is it enough cover or not? I think we made sure phone and laptop were adequately covered. Plus we kept DD on annual holiday insurance.

NCTDN · 05/09/2022 22:01

Just checking if your dc is in university accommodation that you've not had to pay a deposit? Reading other threads I can see some unis have and checking we've not missed anything?

Bonkerz · 05/09/2022 22:09

DS is in wallscourt park. He's waiting for a check in date and time.

TizerorFizz · 06/09/2022 00:16

Wallscourt Is UWE.

Deposit. What does the agreement say?

DottyTrotty · 09/09/2022 20:57

Hi - my DS has been allocated Hiatt Baker self catered. He has just been email the names of 17 out of 23 of the people he is sharing with. They are all male but he did not request single sex. Can anyone shed any light on this? He was keen to be in a mixed flat.

NCTDN · 09/09/2022 21:58

Are they shared bathrooms? If so i guess maybe one block / floor will be girls and another boys?

Doesn't usually work like that unless they have changed it since last year.

DottyTrotty · 15/09/2022 22:49

he spoke to accommodation and he’s not in a profiled flat so it’s just coincidence that the names appear to be male. He’s there now and seems fine. Good luck to those moving over the next few days

scabby1 · 15/09/2022 22:58

I’ve just come across this thread.
Ds got his first choice accommodation- Haitt Baker self catered with en suit. He is thrilled.
I’m having a mini panic because I have just read @1Wanda1 ‘s post about buying bedding for a small double? Are the bed’s in Haitt Baker self-catered small doubles???
i bloody hope not. Ds said single and, as such, all the bedding I have purchased is for a single (mattress topper, fitted sheets, duvet cover etc).

olympicsrock · 15/09/2022 23:03

Catered accomodation is brilliant. That was my favourite halls of resident when I was at university. Really sociable and lovely and easy to come home to a meal. Saved a lot of money too.

DottyTrotty · 15/09/2022 23:33

@scabby1 DS has small double but he’s in self catered. I’ve got a feeling the catered en-suites are single beds. X

StiffUpperHip · 15/09/2022 23:38

Aww, I was in Hiatt-Baker back in 1986. There was no self-catered or en suites back then though. We had a great time! Fond times.

scabby1 · 15/09/2022 23:41

Hi @DottyTrotty Ds is in self catered en-suit. He is in a flat of 10, all rooms with en suit. Fingers crossed these are single beds.
Pleased to hear that your DS is settling in well.
Was moving in straight forward in terms of getting keys, parking etc?
Ds is moving in on Sunday. He’s very excited. He’s spoken to some of the girls he’ll be sharing with and says they seem great (he is with 2 other boys and 7 girls).

DottyTrotty · 15/09/2022 23:48

@scabby1 sorry I didn’t see the self catered bit on your post but I’d heard that if the rooms are en-suite they are more likely to be single beds but don’t quote me on it! I wasn’t able to drop off, he went with my DH (he was very slow at sorting out a time for drop off and Thursday was all that was left!) Hubby said all went smoothly, parking was fine and seemed to get keys easily enough. But it was quiet today and might be a bit busier on Sunday. I’m sure it will be fine though as we all have specific time slots. It’s very exciting and hubby said Hiatt Baker was lovely. What is you DS studying? Mine is Computer Science x

scabby1 · 15/09/2022 23:53

@DottyTrotty thanks for the information -I’m going to ring the accommodation office in the morning.
Ds is studying Economics & Politics.
Are there any girls with your DS?
It’s strange that they haven’t appeared to allocate on a 50/50 basis
