Not sure if there is already a thread on this? My son is hoping to apply to Cambridge for Computer Science for October 2023 start.

Had some clarification from careers today. So can only change a choice within 14 days and if you haven't had an offer. You can add others in up to deadline.
@DeadDonkey DD offer is AAA from Manchester for PPE, she's struggling to decide other choices.....

DS has submitted all of his choice, he ruled out London and some of the other southern universities because of accommodation costs and the risk of not being offered any places.

in the end he went for Oxford, Manchester, York, Lancaster and Aberdeen. He knows Oxford is a long shot and would be happy with any of the others. If offered, Aberdeen would be his back-up as their standard offer is BBB - it also looks like a lovely university and city. I really liked Lancaster when we looked around and also Liverpool, but DS not as keen.

Oxford here as well as a long shot! 11% acceptance rate! Also Durham and Manchester. We too discounted London due to cost. DD thinking of Liverpool, not overly keen on Lancaster or York which I think are great.

DeadDonkey · 18/10/2022 13:22

@Lostinabba DS not keen on Durham - I think he was put off by the open day which was a bit of a mess. I loved the city and really tried to get him to change his mind.

Apparently he 'thinks it [the TMUA] went alright'. So that's good, then...

sighs

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 18/10/2022 14:51

Ds is happy to have the TMUA out of the way. Apparently those sitting it at his school thought that paper 1 was quite hard (they all thought that) and paper 2 was ok, but can have the tendency to look straightforward but then trip you up. So, we'll see. When do they find out the results?
No offers for DS yet, but I don't think we should be expecting any yet...

Aurea · 18/10/2022 15:19

Paper 1 very tricky (trickiest yet), paper 2 straightforward. He was expecting to find paper 1 hard as he's not covered all the maths in class (Scottish curriculum), whereas paper 2 is more logic based.

Aurea · 18/10/2022 15:20

Also interestingly, there were only four students taking the TMUA from the whole of the north east section of Scotland (right up to the islands).

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 18/10/2022 16:43

Aurea, presumably that's only four students who don't go to schools that facilitate it? But, there could be many others from schools where they can sit it within the school? My ds is Scottish too, but following the English curriculum.

Aurea · 18/10/2022 16:48

I understand it's just private schools in Scotland that offer the TMUA in house. Certainly that's what I was told when I contacted Cambridge Admissions. Maybe Edinburgh/Glasgow is different from more outlying areas. My son sat the test via the British Council.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 18/10/2022 17:04

Aurea, very best of luck to him!

Results are Nov 29th or thereabouts IIRC. Although I'm guessing they'll crowdsource the answers and start speculating about boundaries before then...

multivac · 18/10/2022 17:19

Another vote for paper one 'hard', paper two 'really quite ok' actually here!

usedtobeboss3 · 18/10/2022 17:44

First offer in - Exeter AAB! Relieved to have one in the bag...

juicy0 · 18/10/2022 17:47

Great news @usedtobeboss3 Exeter seem to be quick off the mark!

bettbburg · 18/10/2022 17:59

I'm losing track of who has applied where, maybe we could have a list

Oxford/Manchester/Liverpool/Bristol/St Andrews

Aurea · 18/10/2022 18:11

And good luck to yours FLM! 😊

Congrats everyone on all the offers!

Not expecting anything for ages here (Scottish applicant):

Cambridge, St Andrews, Edinburgh, Glasgow and undecided.

perseverence · 18/10/2022 18:25

Good luck to all with that Cambridge exam.
Yes, I'm losing track here too.
My dd doing another set of mock exams tomoz and Thursday.
TSA for Oxford beginning of November.

Hang in there people
time to slot my meditation in again. Re stress levels.

beachcitygirl · 18/10/2022 18:27

Exactly the same here @Aurea what college Cambridge did your dc go for?

HoneyMobster · 18/10/2022 18:31

DS is going for Oxford PPE plus Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter and Nottingham.

Offer received from Nottingham (AAA). Plus we'll advanced in US admissions process for an Ivy League (Liberal Arts) - which may well be over before any Oxford interview.

fUNNYfACE36 · 18/10/2022 18:40

Is anyone else's dc sitting NSAA tomorrow?
Good luck to them all!

usedtobeboss3 · 18/10/2022 18:42

MML (or equivalent) Cambridge, Durham, Exeter, Bath, Bristol
Offer from Exeter AAB

Aurea · 18/10/2022 18:43

Beach city. I'll PM you as I don't want to be too outing.

zezzez · 13/10/2022 13:37

Oh god, no. Just been through it twice. One DC just last year.

I did speak to an admissions tutor after the welcome talk when we dropped DC off the other week and this is basically what she said. She said it doesn't matter where they come from or what type of school it is, their grades are contextualised against that specific school cohort. Lots of people there saying they were worried about imposter syndrome because they are "only" from a state school. As it turns out, the vast majority are. The lady was saying there are other contextualising flags that come into the mix too based on postcode, family situations, whether a student has been in care, etc (something about POLAR and ACORN quintiles). The school is just one aspect, basically.

Well yes.
The 'imposters' are the 'Eton Boys'.

We need to get rid of these 'imposters'.

They are destroying this country, and also other countries too .

perseverence · 18/10/2022 19:57

All political. Whether people on her admit it or not.

princesdando · 18/10/2022 20:51

DS applied for PPE Oxford, Durham, Manchester, UCL and LSE. Offer received from Manchester
