Not sure if there is already a thread on this? My son is hoping to apply to Cambridge for Computer Science for October 2023 start.

Most Cambridge colleges will probably be happy to let you in if you ask nicely and tell them you're a prospective applicant. But you might not be lucky absolutely everywhere: Trinity porters in particular seem to treat all visitors (even respected Cambridge professors!) with the utmost suspicion. Within any given college, some porters will be much nicer than others.

Potplanta · 11/10/2022 22:40

Our bad experience wasn't with Trinity, but I have to admit that I find the Trinity porters scary. And they're very visible.

perseverence · 12/10/2022 08:02

Gosh that was quick balsamico. I hadn't realised an offer would be that quick.

Yes, juicy has a point - getting an offer in the bag early must be reassuring.

I hope my DD gets one. They get so stressed out about it all sometimes. So much pressure and the teacher's strike in FE hasn't helped. Yes, I know they work hard and deserve decent pay, as everyone does, but it is hard on students as they missed so much with pandemic etc.

Ongoing fist bump to all. It is great to get this far...a lot of work involved.

UnclearNuclear · 12/10/2022 08:30

My oldest had 2 offers within 48 hours when she did it... now middle is applying for medicine plus one at Edinburgh... she's not going to hear a dicky bird before November at earliest for interviews for medicine, and Edinburgh don't offer until after March... what a contrast!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 12/10/2022 08:37

Hi all, my ds is about to apply for compsci at Cambridge. What's the thinking on the optional personal statement within the My Cambridge Application. I know they say it doesn't matter if you fill it in or not, but would that be a wasted opportunity?

beachcitygirl · 12/10/2022 08:47

My daughter swithering between Trinity & Newnam at Cambridge. Anyone got any experience/anecdotal thoughts on either?

usedtobeboss3 · 12/10/2022 08:54

Application in and acknowledgements recieved - phew....
Re the optional statement @FriendlyLaundryMonster DS's school have more or less advised not to bother - which surprised me as I can't see that it would do any harm, and might do some good. He's going to do it tomorrow, as he's off to the States on Saturday and won't really be able to do it while he's away.
MML, by the way, and other choices are Durham, Exeter, Bath, Bristol...

perseverence · 12/10/2022 09:14

Re Newnham college - Cambridge. I was quite sad in a way that my DD decided to apply for Oxford - she did summer schools at both but because of her subject choice - opted to apply to Oxford. Cambridge had been supportive, clear and excellent all the way along.

My feeling is - that Newnham looks fantastic. I have experience of academia myself - and it can still be patriarchal so anything which encourages networks of women - supportive ones would be the way to go.

Course there are things that I don't fully get right now about how applications to various colleges are pooled both at Oxford and Cambridge. I'm not sure I want to dwell on it that much either as a mum - I get stressed out enough about it all!

My DD has applied to one college in particular at Oxford I understand. In terms of stress management I'm just thinking as far as the next step - i..e Thinking Skills Assessment exam - whilst hoping DD receives an offer from somewhere soon - just to take the pressure off - it is the uncertainty of it all - that's a killer I find ...

One thing to bear in mind with college choices - is perhaps the scholarships that are available, who they are available to and what kind of scholarships they are.

My DD. rejected one college as a choice because they had the Margaret Thatcher Scholarship. Having seen what the Tories have done to this country - over the past twelve years and the education and health systems in general - it is inhuman and I wouldn't want her to carry that around her neck for the rest of her life...

That's just me though, with my own biases....we all have them eh?

perseverence · 12/10/2022 09:15

I'm sure someone will be along soon with helpful info re college choices

beachcitygirl · 12/10/2022 09:26

Thank you @perseverence and fwiw how absolutely wonderful & special your dd sounds, to have the courage of convictions and refuse a scholarship in that vile woman's name. 👏🏻

goodbyestranger · 12/10/2022 09:30

At undergrad level I'm not sure rating scholarships is the way to go. It certainly is at post grad, but for undergrads the universal bursary scheme is vastly more generous than any scholarship would be. Being a scholar is no bad thing, but being a scholar doesn't carry with it any particular name. The named prize scholarships don't add a great deal more, so probably no need to name them on a CV if you're troubled by the name. Also, you can always decline.

My DC chose colleges based on location (in their case they wanted old and central), general reputation and provision of accommodation.

Newnham is very particular so a world away from Trinity simply by virtue of being a women's college. The two aren't really comparable.

beachcitygirl · 12/10/2022 09:37

Thank @goodbyestranger yes I realise
They are worlds apart but she has good reasons for both. She's autistic and v organised & has several pros for both & so far only one con for each. 🤪

goodbyestranger · 12/10/2022 10:11

beachcitygirl I'm not sure that perserverance's DD has actually been awarded the scholarship and declined it. Just that she has decided not to apply to Margaret Thatcher's old college since it awards scholarships in her name, based on the results of prelims/ mods. It's a major exception to the general rule of named scholarships at undergrad level in its generosity (www.some.ox.ac.uk/the-margaret-thatcher-scholarship-trust/thatcher-scholarships/) but there are plenty of students who would prefer not be associated with it, despite it covering literally all expenses, retrospectively too. I think if my DD4 had been at Somerville and been in contention (she might well have been, based on her recent results), then I would have counselled her to take the pragmatic approach and take the money :) Graduating free from four years debt - hugely tempting. But then I'm cheap.

perseverence · 12/10/2022 10:14

What an interesting and useful thread. Thanks to everyone for contributing.

Less really a case of 'rating' scholarships but rather maintaining an ethical stance...as beachcitygirl said...as many will be aware there is a lot going on around that and funding generally ...especially with decolonising the curriculum...there is a lot to say about that I know...

I'm not sure about the universal bursary scheme, I don't know much about it. Do you have a link handy goodbyestranger...?

Really just looking to the future and trying to reduce the amount of student debt they will be carrying around with them...(for those of us who will be relying on student finance - any scholarships they might get will hopefully reduce the amounts they need to rely on in loans...)

perseverence · 12/10/2022 10:16

good points goodbyestranger and good info thanks

there is a lot to be said for the 'take the devils money to do the Lord's work' approach too...😀ifykwim

DeadDonkey · 12/10/2022 10:23

DS is submitting his application today for PPE at Oxford.

Also hoping he has one or two quick offers through to take the pressure off (more for me than him, as he's very laid back about it all). At the Lancaster open day they said to expect a response within 15 days, so really hoping that one comes through.

perseverence · 12/10/2022 10:48

Thank you so much GBS will process this info as soon as i can. Currently packing up boxes here - house move next month (only after TSA exam though) so will check back later...

All very exciting isn't it?

it sounds like a tough call.

Good luck to you both. It is very helpful if they let the parents know when to expect a response ish.

With my teen I tend to operate an open door policy as far as possible, i.e. if you wants to tell me something I listen but try not to fire too many questions at her, if you know what I mean...the downside of that is - I spend a lot of time wondering what is going on and where she is with things...!

Hard to disagree with that @@perseverence and I'm nicking that handy phrase, first time I've heard it! 😁

perseverence · 12/10/2022 11:15

Thats fine beachcitygirl - good phrase. It was said by a very religious person (catholic) who spent their whole lives really working to help others badly affected by economic injustices. I'm not going to say 'poverty' because I distinguish between cultural poverty and economic poverty. As we know - you can be materially very wealthy but culturally very poor...I'll get off my soap box now.

I digress..back to content of thread

Here are my dd's five choices was trying to work out when offers might come through?

Oxford - not till after results of TSA?
Edinburgh - not until March according to posters here
York - dont' know when offers come through?
Warwick - don't know when offers come through but it says on website offer issued and then interview after that?
Cardiff - don't know when offers come through

Does anyone disagree with the above? If so - please post around it - I'm trying to work out when to panic or not - stress management! 😀

Hello, just found this thread! My dd has applied to Oxford. Would be a dream to get a place but thankfully after going to several open days she has 4 other choices she is happy with. School submitted all her stuff just over a week ago and she received an offer from Bristol a few days later. We had heard that they are fast!!

Cambridge (st Catharines)
Edinburgh
Durham
Bath
Newcastle

Edinburgh is her favourite at teh moment
