Anyone heard back from St Andrews?

VorpalSword · 12/02/2022 19:02

DD has 4 offers in but hasn’t heard back from St Andrews yet apart from the ‘we have received your application’ way back.

Any other English applicants (I know it might be different for Scottish students) got an offer or rejection yet?

Did anyone go to the offer holder day today?
DS was booked to go but sleazyjet cancelled his flight 😡
Hope it was useful for those that got there!

SayYouDontMind · 02/04/2022 21:04

Oh that is so annoying Llamas. My DS went today. Managed to squeeze in two lectures and a visit to McIntosh Hall. Was surprised when they told us that about 25000 applications were received for 2000 places.

I think my DS is probably going to confirm but wants to go to Edinburgh's offer day on the 23rd before finalising. Fortunately we were travelling from within Scotland so only a 2hr car journey for us.

LlamasintheFog · 03/04/2022 10:22

Thanks @SayYouDontMind yes it was very annoying but, realistically, he will firm them as St A's is a level up from his other offers. Though it's such a unique place I would like him to have seen it first. Glad your DS found it useful and hope Edinburgh goes well!

Eightytwenty · 03/04/2022 12:43

@LlamasintheFog what a pity. Was a really good open day but am sure your DS will be fine even without seeing it. There was a lot of emphasis on the unique culture that comes with it being small and international. We heard a lot of overseas voices from the student ambassadors and the current students. Everything is close by so no more than 10-15 mins from the science block to the old quad. Lots of the info they shared is on the website so worth directing your Dc to

  • how the year 1/2 modules work (basically pick 3 courses including the 1-2 you’ve signed up for
  • opportunity for year abroad
  • how the accommodation placement works

Shout if you have any questions.

Daughter also got a no from St Andrew’s. It was her 2nd choice as the Cambridge offer is high AA A and she is having confidence issues (her teachers aren’t though),

Now a choice between York and Aberdeen. Both good unis and good for her course but Aberdeen is so far away!

@VorpalSword congratulations on the Cambridge offer - it’s funny that they accept and decline differently (DS was pooled for Cambridge but not picked up but now has an unconditional for St A).

Is that 1 A star and 2 A’s? Doesn’t seem impossibly high compared with some of the st A / Durham offers so hopefully she achieves it.

MarchingFrogs · 04/04/2022 13:17

A A A comes out as A AA if you manage to type A (space) then AA, instead of the first space after the first A*?

Valleyofthedollymix · 04/04/2022 13:22

@LlamasintheFog DS's experience might be helpful. So many people said to him, including school, oh god St Andrews is such a unique place you've got to visit it beforehand because you might hate. He was worrying that it was going to be one street town with a golf course and castle, especially coming from a London borough with 15x the population.

He was pleasantly surprised and relieved. It feels like a proper town, the beaches stunning and enormous and he loved the sort of campus feel of the halls of residences he saw. Given that the one he likes best is almost a 30 minute walk to the centre, it doesn't feel as teeny tiny and claustrophobic as he thought it would.

VorpalSword · 04/04/2022 15:21

Sorry forgot the bold issue. 2 A* (classics and history) and A in the third.

I think it has been harder for English students to get into St Andrew’s this year due to quota and deferrals. Might be wrong but my daughter’s friends have a lot more rejections than you would expect.

Wonderful place and the beaches are glorious.

Thank you @Valleyofthedollymix and @Eightytwenty for your insight, sounds like he hasn't missed anything critical, though obviously it feels a bit weird to "firm" somewhere he's not been.

Now he just has to do the work and get the grades 😬

Eightytwenty · 08/04/2022 07:53

DS was rejected from Durham yesterday so no decision making required and he’s happy to have firmed St Andrews. Now excited to be making plans on what accommodation type to choose. He’s lucky to have an Unconditional (Scottish student) so it’s all starting to feel very real.

ISpyCobraKai · 08/04/2022 13:11

Dd got a conditional over a week ago, but has chosen Glasgow.

SayYouDontMind · 29/04/2022 15:53

So anyone still waiting to hear from St As? My DS has an unconditional offer but he applied to two courses and hasn't heard back about the 2nd. He doesn't want to accept until he knows all his offers. I know he's in a privileged position as there are so many still waiting on ANY offer from them. The Student Room has lots waiting and many who have withdrawn because they've other offers.

There's been a slew of rejections on TSR recently but it's been quiet today. I guess there's a few hours left though. Otherwise we're into May. When DS applied in October I would never have thought we'd still be here now waiting on a decision!

stormsurfer · 29/04/2022 19:57

Still waiting to hear about History. Think UCAS says need to tell us by May 19th?

SayYouDontMind · 11/05/2022 20:16

My DS got a rejection from St As yesterday - but will now accept the Unconditional offer they made him in March (he applied to two courses there) I think they sent out many offers and rejections yesterday but still lots are waiting.

So now it feels real. DS has done 2 AHs in past week or so - just AH History to go next week. Tomorrow he'll press the accept button and apply for accommodation and finance.

Anyone else still waiting to hear?

stormsurfer · 15/05/2022 12:48

DD got rejection from St A last week. As did all the applicants from her school (Scottish school). Is this common across other schools in Scotland?

Eightytwenty · 15/05/2022 16:10

@stormsurfer that is really rubbish. Sorry to hear.

stormsurfer · 15/05/2022 16:45

@Eightytwenty thank you. I was wondering if St A were so over subscribed this year that they could pick only students who will pay the higher rates versus Scottish ones who pay less. Seems strange the whole year group were rejected across many subjects.

Eightytwenty · 15/05/2022 17:49

@stormsurfer i know of a number of v good candidates who were rejected across a range of subjects. My son and a couple of his friends from school we’re lucky but not many people from his former school were offered places.

stormsurfer · 15/05/2022 18:16

@Eightytwenty it's disappointing. DD got 4 out of her 5. But St A was her first choice.
