Anyone heard back from St Andrews?

VorpalSword · 12/02/2022 19:02

DD has 4 offers in but hasn’t heard back from St Andrews yet apart from the ‘we have received your application’ way back.

Any other English applicants (I know it might be different for Scottish students) got an offer or rejection yet?

OP posts:
pinkmoomin · 01/03/2022 13:04

DD received an offer for English Lit. yesterday. She was in total disbelief as really wasn't expecting it.

Good luck to those still waiting to hear.

LlamasintheFog · 01/03/2022 13:15

Does anyone know how long the time lag is between offers on UCAS and receiving an email from St A? DS got an offer shown on UCAS yesterday but no email yet. With his other offers there was no more than an hour gap so we're wondering if he should ring to check? If I'm brutally honest we're both surprised he got on offer so slightly in "believe it when we see it mode"! Blush

Chewbecca · 01/03/2022 13:39

llamas what subject please?!

Redcrayons · 01/03/2022 13:44

Not yet or Edinburgh. Why can’t they all do it at the same time like schools Angry?

pinkmoomin · 01/03/2022 13:47

LlamasintheFog My DD hasn’t received the email either Confused

LlamasintheFog · 01/03/2022 14:03

@Chewbecca economics

LlamasintheFog · 01/03/2022 14:09

@pinkmoomin it is stressful. DS is adamant he's not going to ring them though 😬

Chewbecca · 01/03/2022 15:08

Congratulations to the new offer holders!

LlamasintheFog · 01/03/2022 17:51

The email has just landed. Much relief here!
So I guess the message is don't panic if it takes a couple of days to come through.

StarsAndSugarlumps · 06/03/2022 20:50

I’m stalking because mine would be a 2024 entrant, but has already set his heart on St Andrews for History or Politics. So I am trying to find out what I can.

Can I ask a couple of questions?

I see entry requirements are AAAAB at Higher, including A in History. I assume they all need to be in 5th year, given offers are coming out in March?

I was confused at the acceptance rate …something like 8%. Does that mean that only 8% of students who meet the AAAAB requirement get accepted?

Is being a Scottish student a disadvantage because of the cap?

Alittlewornout · 06/03/2022 21:07

@LlamasintheFog I can't answer re acceptance rate but be aware St Andrews does not offer politics. Applying for joint honours can be a gamble as both subject schools need to want the student and the personal statement can be tricky yo tailor. Scottish degrees are great for keeping your options open as the student chooses 3 subjects in 1st and second year. We know of a fair few students who graduated with a different degree to the original applied for.
My son studied history at St As and was a Scottish student, he finished last year. If I can be of any help just ask, I also have a dd there currently.

DS is still waiting to hear for Maths. He’s still waiting to hear from Imperial and Edinburgh too. He has an offer for Warwick so far and an offer holder day soon

hollypocks · 07/03/2022 13:04

@StarsAndSugarlumps just to say that I read History and International Relations (not pure politics but similar modules in some areas). It’s an excellent course, DS at St As now but studying languages, it’s a fantastic place

DS has applied for joint honours in His/IR. Suspect he won’t get an offer despite very high greases, due to personal statement being more geared to Cambridge, plus additional ‘disadvantages’ of being a Scottish student (capped numbers ) and currently at private school (despite 11 years at state).

Chewbecca · 07/03/2022 22:19

Lots of St A rejects on TSR today.

Igglepigglesblankie · 08/03/2022 07:46

@chewbecca I saw that - and some with really high predicted grades too. It really does seem like a lottery. Wish they would put us out of our misery soon as DS is keen to firm his choices. Not getting St Andrews will make the choice quite easy for him which would be a plus.

Chewbecca · 08/03/2022 07:54

I’m not holding my breath! Did you see this post too?!

Phoned St Andrews Admissions today to ask about offers and they said the majority of offers would come out towards the end of April

Chewbecca · 08/03/2022 07:57

Yes, the rejected candidate certainly had higher predicted grades than DS (4 x A*!). Perhaps the PS was or school ref not what they’re looking for? We will probably never know!

Darbs76 · 08/03/2022 08:45

I think most applying to St A will have high predicted grades. DS has 3 A*’s predicted and is worried he won’t get a place. His statement was geared to Oxford (rejection) so he’s not hopeful but it’s his 1st choice by far if he gets an offer. Really hope he does as he was really dejected after Oxford rejection. But he does have Warwick and he liked it there and much more convenient

Igglepigglesblankie · 08/03/2022 11:43

It’s very annoying to be sending offers out late in April - it’s a long way to travel for us (a flight and overnight stay) and DS wouldn’t want to do that so close to exams. Also they have an offer holder day on the 2nd April so why send out offers after that - very bizarre. I would have loved for DS to go as it was where i went but he seems pretty happy to firm Durham and insure Warwick. So disheartening for some of these kids getting rejected with perfect predictions - they really do seem to be copping the worst repercussions of the pandemic.

shockthemonkey · 08/03/2022 14:13

French students here - one has heard already, for Art History and Philo, another waiting for Financial Economics.

EwwSprouts · 08/03/2022 21:29

DS was rejected today. RUK. Predicted 3A*. They made it clear on the applicants Zoom that overseas students were the priority after home students so he knew it was just a punt, but he was drawn to the town.

Aurea · 09/03/2022 12:38

Sprouts

I am very sorry about the rejection. I'm sure your DC will thrive wherever they end up.

I'm not sure it's quite correct though about Scottish students having priority. As Scottish tuition fees are fully funded by the Scottish government they are very limited in number. You will find many students with stellar grades with rejections from top unis due to the limited places.

The Scottish government only pay £1820 per student p.a. in tuition fees so the Scottish universities are keen to take internationals and other RUK students as they pay more to make up the funding gap.

Anecdotally, St As has been really working hard towards contextualising results and raising the number of successful state school applications and this may be the reason for many unexpected rejections. I attended an open day in person just before covid with my Scottish DC in which this was discussed.

St Andrews is difficult to get in to
6 years ago my DD was the only one of her cohort at Scottish school to get an offer
All had 6 as in their Highers

Chewbecca · 09/03/2022 13:54

DS rejection arrived today too.
Never mind, he has 4 others so plenty of options.
Good luck to those still waiting.
