Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

@GladysGeorgina It is definitely worth checking the list of WP schools for Bristol. My friend's DC is in a good state comprehensive and was very surprised to see it on the Bristol WP list. I believe that although standard med offers are A A A, with resits they sometimes ask for higher than standard.

Unfortunately my daughter was rejected from all of her medicine universities. There is a very slim chance that she could be put on a waiting list for Liverpool (she was interviewed) but won’t know that until 9th June, the UCAS deadline date.
My question is that she has an offer to study Natural Sciences at Bath, if she puts that as her UCAS choice does it put her out of the running for the potential Liverpool wait list or a possible place (I know it’s very unlikely) of a medicine place in clearing? Thank you so much for any advice offered.

@jenthehen if she wants to do medicine she should reject the Nat Sci offer and plan a gap year with a eye on Clearing, but assuming that Clearing would just be a bonus opportunity. A good gap year can give the little push to to then over the line next year. If she is considering grad medicine, it is more expensive, takes longer and is much more competitive than A100. Doing A100 as a grad is not an option for everyone as you can't get a loan for the fees.

What Monkey2001 said, but I would add to that. You would need to contact Liverpool to be sure, but most of the universities are running their waitlists on the basis that they will only offer to someone who doesn't have another offer of any kind. I believe there are poaching issues that they are concerned about (and that might apply even for a non medical offer). I think it is HYMS who has specifically asked for consent from those on the waitlist to approach them even if they have another offer, but I haven't heard of any others doing this.

I believe that to go into clearing you need to reject your other offers, but you could do that at the time. However given that all medical schools require interview, even when they go into clearing, I don't know how one would time it.

The advice universally is, if you are serious about medicine, take a gap year and give it another shot. You will be a year older, more mature, hopefully have more work experience etc (you can use the gap year to get this and many get a job and earn some money while doing it - working as an HCA is a common choice, you apparently really get to see what is going on in a hospital), more able to concentrate on UCAT/BMAT/Interview prep without the distraction of A Levels.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 18/05/2022 06:31

Only 2 more days until the offers are finished- Fingers crossed for those still waiting.

kackle · 18/05/2022 07:36

Not hopeful of a Newcastle offer at this stage.

if a rejection is on its way, would rather they just get on with it now so my dc can focus on A levels.

jenthehen · 18/05/2022 11:27

Thanks @Monkey2001 and @Bimkom her current plan is to resit the UCAT to try and improve on her score from this year and then see what results day brings.

Monkey2001 · 18/05/2022 11:33

@kackle I know they really want Newcastle, but your DC is actually in a good place. Other DC will be nursing hope until results day, so will have the uncertainty hanging over them throughout the exam period. I hope that if they don't get good news by close of play tomorrow they will be able to focus positively on Edinburgh - lots of people would love to be in your DC's position. Maybe stepping back for perspective might help?

One thing which might help is that the standard contextual offer at Newcastle is ABB. If your DC is eligible and misses the Edinburgh offer but gets ABB they could still try Newcastle on results day once they know how many people have missed their grades.

thanks. I know i am sounding ungrateful and we are in a better position than many.

the Newcastle partners offer of BBB would take the pressure off a bit is i guess where I am coming from but acknowledge many others will be stuck waiting till results day Its a horrible system

Bimkom · 18/05/2022 12:27

@jenthehen

I posted this upthread, but it might be worth showing to your DD:

www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7209108

It is a group of inspiring stories from gap year students who got in this year after rejection last year. Might give her a sense that it really is possible.

kackle · 18/05/2022 17:59

Rejection ftom Newcastle today

firmed Edinburgh, insured UEA.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 18/05/2022 19:33

Sorry to hear that @kackle I know she wanted Newcastle . Edinburgh is lovely though.
We are just getting ourselves ready for another stressful year once the exams are over and the whole process starts again. So not looking forward to it but congratulations to all those who have offers and good luck with exams!

opoponax · 18/05/2022 21:07

I'm really sorry to hear about Newcastle @kackle but Edinburgh will be great. @Monkey2001 I'm thinking of your DS and so hope he gets some good news in the next couple of days. Looking forward to some handholding on the 2023 thread @coffeeandbiscuittime.

Monkey2001 · 18/05/2022 21:53

Sorry to hear that Kackle, hope she smashes those grades!

Rejection from Newcastle here too, but I think they are still being cautious. They said they will review the situation 10th June, then monthly. Still crossing everything!

@Monkey2001 I'm really sorry to hear that. Hopefully Newcastle will end up making more offers. Crossing everything for your DS too.

Haffdonga · 18/05/2022 22:09

So sorry to hear that @kackle and @Monkey2001 I think we've all been on tenterhooks for you. Hope your dc are dealing with it ok. As you say it's really not over yet so try to just focus on those grades.

Millylovespuddles · 18/05/2022 22:45

@Monkey2001 like so many others, I was hoping for good news from Newcastle for your DS. Even though our family didn't go through this horrendous process this year, I am still so angry that our youngsters have to deal with such pressure at this crucial time of their school year. Why oh why can't these clever (?) people in admissions be made to uniformly streamline the system and complete their offers before Easter at the latest.
There has to be a fairer way 😡

KingscoteStaff · 18/05/2022 22:47

Now that’s really rubbish @Monkey2001 - so sorry. Put it in a box and focus on what’s next, I guess, but easier said than done.
