Thought I would start a new thread as its likely to fill up quick now.

So here we are after many months of applications, assessments and interviews. The wait is finally over for those with DC who have applied to Oxford. Those with Cambridge applicants have another 2 weeks to wait until the 25th Jan (bummer!!)

You have all been a lovely bunch to share this journey with and I wish your dc nothing but the BEST OF LUCK for tomorrow (and the 25th). Flowers

Agree, it has been a long hard journey to today and it will take time to process before the cloud of that starts to lift (and it will). I wasn't meaning to sound as if they should forget all about it in one day and move on. Sorry if post came across like that

You sounded 100% spot on and I totally agree with you. I’m just not good with words.
I was fully ready to focus on my sons other offers this morning.

Shimy · 11/01/2022 17:03

Congratulations again Whatsin. Never mind, I've posted many a post that sounded nothing like what I was trying to say in my head. I'm sure people just think I'm weird.

Puffalicious · 11/01/2022 17:13

Hi again all,

DS didn't get an interview- you may remember my wailing Grin- but I was so invested in all your DC I wanted to nip back tonight. Wonderful congratulations for all of you with good news,it must feel super after all these months. To those of you feeling disappointed/ angry/ emotional, I get you, I really do: hug them tonight and keep them close, they'll do wonderful things I'm sure.

DS has 3 unconditionals, including Edinburgh and Glasgow, and awaiting St Andrew's, so it's definitely just the start of a wonderful journey for all the DC. Be sad and then look to the bright future.

Piggywaspushed any news?

Shimy · 11/01/2022 17:20

@Puffalicious 3 Unconditionals including Edingburgh and Glasgow is AMAZING! does he have his results in hand?

Puffalicious · 11/01/2022 17:27
@Puffalicious 3 Unconditionals including Edingburgh and Glasgow is AMAZING! does he have his results in hand?
Yes Shimy as we're in Scotland and he completed his Highers in S5 where it's the norm. You then can choose to go to Uni then or do S6 (Advanced Highers) before going. He got great results (5 X A band 1 - above 90%) but felt too young (just turned 17 in sep) so is doing Advanced Highers and additional Highers this year. It's a v different system, and the main reason we have a 4 year university course. I myself went to uni at 16 after S5 Confused- it was a bit mental!

He knew Oxford Maths was a long shot, I was more disappointed I think, so that's why I wanted to come on and give all the parents a very unmumsnetty hug Flowers

Congratulations to all with offers and commiserations to those without.

My DD has an AAA offer for History at St Catherine's. @Neurodiversitydoctor perhaps our dc will meet 🙂 I am so proud I could burst. I work at her school so I found out soon after she did. Lots of staff came to find me to congratulate me. It's been a bloody lovely day.

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/01/2022 17:57

@mynameisnotmichaelcaine aww that’s lovely, well done to your dd 😀

Shimy · 11/01/2022 18:05

@Puffalicious That makes perfect sense. He has done so well especially bearing in mind his age too. The Oxbridge application itself is so intense it's no wonder a rejection just bites that bit more than any others. Hopefully, they will recover and start to look forward excitedly to their other great offers and just put it down to experience.

@mynameisnotmichaelcaine Congratulations! continue to enjoy your lovely day.

Storminamu · 11/01/2022 18:11

@Puffalicious - Does your DS have a preferred option? My DC is tempted by Glasgow (we're waiting for the likely rejection by Cambridge). St Andrew's has an amazing reputation (currently above Oxbridge in one of the league tables) but the town is too small, apparently.

Letsgoforaskip · 11/01/2022 18:17

My DS has got an offer!!!!!!
Congratulations to all our young people for getting so far in such a challenging process.
My DD was disappointed at this stage a couple of years ago and is now happy and thriving elsewhere. I clearly remember how gutted I felt for her and I believe she was just as capable.
My favourite aspect of this thread is hearing about the people behind their numbers. Your kids all sound awesome!

Similarly, Storminamu he feels St A's is gorgeous but just too small. DNephew started this year and likes it very much but DNiece is in Dundee and really doesn't like St As because of its size. Different strokes.

He's still weighing up Edinburgh and Glasgow, but Glasgow is the front runner as it's bigger and according to DS is more cosmopolitan, has better clubs and music scene Grin which is his thing! He's still playing with a year out too.

SirVixofVixHall · 11/01/2022 18:41
@SirVixofVixHall Re how it works if you get interviews at more than one college ... DS applied for College A and had interview. He then got asked to interview at College B and College C. This morning he got an email from College B with an offer and UCAS had the offer information with the College B code. Funnily enough he thought the College B was the hardest interview.
Dd applied to college A, for her course there are always two interviews at different colleges so she had another interview at college B which she felt went better.
College A have sent an offer. Do they get “first dibs” as they are the college applied to ? I am just curious.

CaliforniaDrumming · 11/01/2022 19:16

Hi everyone, I was on this thread under a different name. I left when DS was rejected by Cambridge ( and then LSE) for Economics, but wanted to pop back in to congratulate everyone with offers and my sympathies to those who did not get offers.

Some people on here were very kind to me when grappling with DS' disappointment. Just wanted to add that he got an offer from UCL yesterday. ( In addition to offers from Warwick and Notts) And he is thrilled to bits. I hope those who got rejections find equally good alternatives and I am sure they will!

SeasonFinale · 11/01/2022 19:19

@SirVixofVixHall yes they get first dibs

Familyfallout · 11/01/2022 19:55

DD has an offer for Oxford (Hertford College) engineering 2A* and an A. I posted ages ago about how to help my DD early on in the application process and got some great advice at the time (although this is all her own doing and I can't claim the credit). She also has offers for Swansea and Sheffield. I don't want her to leave home but she can't wait to get away. Main worry re uni is fitting in at Oxford, you hear so much how many public school kids go and she is not from this background, on the plus side the accommodation looks cheaper than the other unis. Anyone else know much about Hertford?

Congrats to all the others with offers, comiserations to those without - I have to think an awful lot of luck must be involved as there really can't be much to choose between at these high performance levels.

Storminamu · 11/01/2022 20:03

I think Hertford is one of the more low key colleges.

Storminamu · 11/01/2022 20:06

My DC1 is at Cambridge, and if your household income is low, there's a lot of financial help. DC1 gets a very useful bursary - I think this is from the university but topped up by the college. The college also paid £500 towards a new computer.

Whatstheweatherlike · 11/01/2022 20:08

Just catching up on all the latest updates here. Congratulations to all those with offers and commiserations to those who didn't get the news they were hoping for today.

I know I'm not a regular poster on here, however I have been following all your stories and was really rooting for everyone today. Thank you so much to all those who have spent time posting advice and words of encouragement here. It genuinely has been the place that has kept me sane as we've worked through this gruelling process.

goodbyestranger · 11/01/2022 20:11

Familyfallout really nothing to worry about at all. Hertford is a lovely college (none of mine did undergrad there but one did postgrad). It's a non issue.

goodbyestranger · 11/01/2022 20:13

Yes as SeasonFinale says the college of choice gets the first option on an applicant, having compared notes about interviews with the second college. Only if the college of choice prefers other applicants does the second college get an option to offer.

petitebleu · 11/01/2022 20:17

Congratulations to all of you with offers. For those who didn't get the news they wanted, I hope you get other offers that suit you even better.

One of my friends has a dc at Hertford. They are from a very normal comprehensive school. They are really enjoying their time there. I don't know many details but I do know they were quite worried about how they would fit in and it's been absolutely fine.
JulesJules · 11/01/2022 20:43

This year, 70% of offers have been made to state educated students www.oxfordstudent.com/2022/01/11/2022-undergraduate-admissions-sees-record-numbers-from-state-schools/?s=09

ealingwestmum · 11/01/2022 20:45

CaliforniaDrumming; good to hear your update; congratulations to your DS on his UCL and other offers.

And to all the DC offer holders - very well done to them all. Those that were not on the positive receiving end today, I hope as and when ready, they are able to move forward with equally exciting options.

Stockpot · 11/01/2022 22:00

My congratulations and commiserations. I hope all the DC end up somewhere they will thrive and feel they belong.
