University Offers for 2022 Start

I've heard universities are being more cautious this year, with some stating that they are not going to make most offers until the January deadline, when they can see a clearer picture - because of the over-subscription that happened for last year's students.

I thought it might be interesting to see which universities are making offers for which subjects.

We've only heard from York so far, for Computer Science. York University do seem to be making early offers.

Anyone else heard from any universities? Think it would be good to know what is happening out there :)

Yep, DS's friend predicted 3A* and has 1 in hand from doing maths a year early. GCSEs a string of 9s. Personable, broad extra curricular, shown subject depth with MOOCs etc. His top two choices have rejected him. Waiting for one of the traditionally late but now also considering a gap year.

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/02/2022 18:35

Oh that's good to know @Braveheart35.

We haven't actually visited Durham yet as there were no face to face open days and it is a bit of a trek from where we live.

Am hoping to go there in half term at the end of the month just for a look around (and for DS to properly grasp how far away it is!), but am a bit worried that he won't have had an offer yet and that if he goes and falls in love with the place even more a potential rejection would be even harder...

mich101 · 01/02/2022 18:37

Son finally got offer from Durham yesterday!! Home/standard looking to do General engineering. So hopefully anyone else waiting knows the standard offers are starting to be sent

Niceday203 · 01/02/2022 18:44

mich101, congratulations to your son. That is great news.
Email received here from Durham yesterday saying... we are processing lots of applications - you will hear from us any time from now to the UCAS deadline !!!! I don't even know when that is. UCL still silent. For those still waiting, this is just awful.....

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 18:51

@mich101 is your DS year 13 and from English not an overseas student or a student with a contextual offer? Thanks for the heads up.

@JemimaMuddledUp - we visited Durham in the summer. We couldn’t go in very many buildings (two and it was mainly an outside walking tour with a very enthusiastic and articulate student ambassador, no subject talks etc) but DS fell in love with the architecture and place.

@EwwSprouts and @HasaDigaEebowai so much competition over places. I am starting to wonder whether DS should just take York and Lancaster (as firm and insurance) with the hope of some accommodation. He received an A for his EPQ and is also predicted A x 3 and an A in his A levels he has done wider reading and is mentoring younger students at his GS but isn’t head boy (he didn’t fancy applying) and hasn’t to my knowledge done any MOOC’s.

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 18:52

@Niceday203 we received the same email today.

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/02/2022 19:01

@mich101 well done to your DS!

@Niceday203 if they mean the UCAS application deadline, that was last week. If they mean their deadline to respond I don't think that is until May. Which is a very long time to wait.

Fruitygal · 01/02/2022 19:24

@Niceday203 and @NinaProudman2022 we received the same email too today!? very frustrating ....

The offer day for Durham is in mid March and bookable from mid feb other than that its ANOTHER ONLINE OPTION in April (Apologies for the capitals but if she didn't like the course so much I'd tell her to withdraw)

Given they have done only 2 online open days where we saw the same single lecturer, a PhD student and a single 1st year. So while reasonably informative it didn't help get any feel for the department or the staff dynamics. There is only one video I can find around the course she is interested in on youtube and its more than 8 years old?

The whole thing is a pain - my DS1 and DS2 were not applying to these type of unis so we did UCAS form in and offers or rejections in 3-4 weeks from start to finish (bar one that rejected initially and then interviewed 2 months later and offered)

mich101 · 01/02/2022 19:25

@NinaProudman2022 yes.. he is English/home student. He does not qualify for contextual.. this is a totally standard offer. He is the first of his friends to hear from Durham

NCTDN · 01/02/2022 19:27

My dd got that email from Durham too, saying she would hear in the next few MONTHS!
NCTDN · 01/02/2022 19:29

@Fruitygal how do you know the Durham offer days? Is that for a particular subject?

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 19:32

@mich101 thats great and congratulations to your DS.

@Fruitygal if the offer day is in March maybe Durham will have made decisions about all or most of their offers and rejections a couple of weeks before that date to allow people to attend it if they want to and are able to.

Fruitygal · 01/02/2022 19:34

@NCTDN its on their website and they mentioned it somewhere else too - booking opens mid feb and the open day/s (unclear how many) but mid March with an online one in mid April

SJ1975 · 01/02/2022 19:42

My DS received the same Durham email today and was very frustrated by it. I know that Durham are known for late offers but to suggest some applicants may need to wait until May seems unreasonable, particularly as offer holder days are supposed to be in March. Does this mean that applicants who receive late offers won't get to visit in person before making a decision? We visited Durham as a family over the summer but this is not the same as actually touring the facilities and speaking to staff and students. We did the virtual open day but my DS has already said that he wouldn't feel happy choosing Durham based on this alone. There is also the issue of potentially missing out on first choices of accommodation at other universities, some of which open up for bookings quite early for firm applicants. From a practical point of view, as a parent, I would like to know if we are going to an open day as we would need to sort out overnight accommodation in the area. I agree with the suggestion that it would be far better if all decisions were released on a set day - he and I would certainly spend much less time checking emails and trawling threads like this for glimmers of hope!

You think so, re getting all offers out politely before offer holder days, but actually they don’t, bizarrely

mich101 · 01/02/2022 19:47

I definitely remember seeing on their website about an offer holder day mid March. Maybe (and hopefully for those waiting) the offers will mainly all go out this month. Son got the log in details today to rank accommodation. Will share news if he hears about any offer holder days

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 19:49

Thanks Mich x

Fruitygal · 01/02/2022 19:51

@mich101 tell him to rank as soon as possible because friend told me Durham start allocating immediately.

If you look at last year on TSR people were still waiting in mid March

mich101 · 01/02/2022 19:54

Thank you @Fruitygal I think he wants south as he wants SC and en-suite… which doesn’t appear to be overly popular! 🤣 but I will get him to hopefully do it swiftly!!

Fruitygal · 01/02/2022 19:57

@SJ1975 we feel the same way - visited in Summer and got to see inside two colleges and also accidentally bumped into a 2nd year student from DDs course while looking round castle. So positive vibe but DD will not be happy without meeting the staff and seeing the department. She needs to get a feel yes or no from the visit.

Fruitygal · 01/02/2022 19:59

@mich101 DD wants SC as loves to cook (saw inside of John Snow and South in the summer) both great and friends son went to JOBO across the road also good - DH would like her to pick one of the Harry Potter catered places but she is really not fussed.

NCTDN · 01/02/2022 20:00

I've just had an interesting conversation with dd. She was really keen on Warwick and their online open day was very impressive. We went for the day to visit and it was totally different to what she expected.
It shows that they really do need to visit in person to get a feel for the place.

realynotfair · 01/02/2022 20:07

My DS didn't get good grades last year in 2 x Alevels and a BTEC. He stayed onto college for another year and is predicted distinction in another BTEC that he wants to study at uni. He has 3 offers lower than predicted grades and an unconditional offer at his first choice.

Maybe it's not all about A's but passion for the course. He's very happy!

SJ1975 · 01/02/2022 20:07

@Fruitygal and @NCTDN. Completely agree about getting a feel for a place. We attended an offer holder day at York last weekend and, although there were many positive things about the course and campus, DS just didn't feel it was the right place for him. In contrast, he loved Sheffield, both at the general open day and offer holders day. This will be his first choice if Durham don't offer (or if he simply gives up on them!)

Fruitygal · 01/02/2022 20:13

@SJ1975 Snap! DD went to york last weekend - same feeling 😂 and going to offer holder day at Sheffield in a fortnight but loved open day in October - so it would be Durham if offered and then Sheffield !
