University Offers for 2022 Start

I've heard universities are being more cautious this year, with some stating that they are not going to make most offers until the January deadline, when they can see a clearer picture - because of the over-subscription that happened for last year's students.

I thought it might be interesting to see which universities are making offers for which subjects.

We've only heard from York so far, for Computer Science. York University do seem to be making early offers.

Anyone else heard from any universities? Think it would be good to know what is happening out there :)

Has she been to / planned offer holder days in York and Reading?
Which course makes her most excited?

I mean, on the face of it, York would seem to be a much nicer city than Reading but that’s superficially.

OrangeBlossom28 · 30/01/2022 12:15

@Chewbecca
We've visited Reading twice for open days and York twice for our own tours! Offer holder days booked for both during half term. Both courses on paper are exactly right for her! York offer is AAB and Reading ABB and she got A star, A in her recent mocks. Still waiting for third subject grade but should be a B.
When we go again hopefully she can decide which feels right.

Went to York for 2nd time yesterday (1st time was us over the summer obviously no real access to anything) and we had previously done the online open day which was strong - mmmmm. Students were friendly but it was super cold and a tad disorganised in places.

Lunch bags were underwhelming (DDs review) No fruit or biscuits :(

DD went off for a couple of hrs of sessions and made friends quickly and this cheered her as had been worried how easy it would be to make new friends at uni.

Q and A session by staff for parents and kids over lunch was a little worrying as they avoided or were vague on the answers relating to field trips and face to face contact not quite PMQs but made DH and I both uneasy (not expressed to DD) but when we were sent off for the 2hrs as soon as got out of the building, we had both been concerned by the lack of clarity.

Meet students doing other courses like International relations, Drama and History. Those doing politics and /or international relations were positive and mainly already had graduate jobs for next summer which was super positive.

Friendly, nice accommodation on East campus and quick walk to get to West, very windy and differences in return to face to face between courses so worth asking.

BTW accommodation portal opens on Monday.

How did you find out about the offer holder days?

DS has offers from Lancaster and York, still waiting for the other three. It would be good to go and have a look before deciding.

OrangeBlossom28 · 31/01/2022 19:01

Uni websites or emails to the student are usually the ways to see when they are. If it's Business Management at York I've heard there are no slots left for this on the offer holder days.

Fruitygal · 31/01/2022 19:21

@JemimaMuddledUp when you get an offer from York they send you an email to set up a profile and password then once you are all set up you can access a portal and see the offer days and book in. DD booked for January session back in late November/early december.

We have a lancaster offer but she is not interested so haven't looked into it.

JemimaMuddledUp · 31/01/2022 19:28

Thanks. DS has only had the offers today so perhaps he's had or will soon have an email.

He has applied to study History.

Neither York nor Lancaster are his favourites, the top choice is Durham. It would still be good to visit the others though as he obviously has to decide on an insurance if/when he does get an offer from Durham.

Linneasweet · 01/02/2022 07:53

My DD applied to 5 unis in November, got offers from 4 of them within a week but still waiting for Bath (4th choice) for sociology. In the meantime her 1st choice, York, want a deposit for accommodation if she firm it up. Problem is that she can't firm it up until she had answer from Bath! Can someone please advice us on this, as it sounds ridiculous that she may loose out on her preferred accommodation in York just through waiting for a answer from a uni that's not even her insurance choice?

bonnieliesovertheocean · 01/02/2022 08:24

Apparently she can withdraw the choice she has not had an offer for on ucas and then can go ahead and firm her top choice. I just looked at ucas faq and saw that - am no expert as I am a uni mum first timer. Hope that helps (and is correct).

Citygirl2019 · 01/02/2022 08:29

@Linneasweet she can remove the bath application from her UCAS and firm York and her insurance.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/02/2022 08:32

Yes, remove the bath application and firm york

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 08:49

DS has been rejected from his first choice Uni and has received offers from his 4th and 5th choice (both are reputable and popular Uni choices and one of which is likely to be his insurance option and one of these have opened up applications for accommodation today on a first come first served basis)!!! But DS is still waiting to hear from his 2nd and 3rd choice (Durham and St. Andrews neither of who have a reputation for offering early or timely). So do we just have to wait and end up with the dregs of accommodation at the back of beyond for all our choices?

bonnieliesovertheocean · 01/02/2022 09:26

It's so stressful isn't it? All these offer holder days being booked up and accommodation application deadlines while still waiting for some.Confused

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 09:57

Yes @bonnieliesovertheocean surely they should all offer by X date and accommodation shouldn’t only open on Y date. The same for all DC. As the poor DC have enough on with school work and mocks let alone with waiting for this (different people hearing at different times and us pestering them asking if they have received any emails etc) especially if you are so laid back that everything would surely be gone by the time they get their bums in gear and decide to mention something.

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 09:57

Should not shouldn’t.

TequilaShot · 01/02/2022 10:15

@NinaProudman2022 That would be the sensible thing to do. Getting stressed here too as for DS's first choice we are still waiting and his second choice has offered but haven't confirmed his fee status so also in limbo.

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 11:56

It really is a pain. I am one of the last of my friends to have children. I had no idea how stressful year 13 could be for them the whole system looks like a total fiasco especially as many of DS’s choices such as Durham, St Andrews and York were over subscribed last year so not only were first years not guaranteed rooms in halls in first year they weren’t even guaranteed rooms in the University town or city they had applied to. With York using Leeds and Hull and St Andrews using Cupar and somewhere else and I can’t remember where some Durham students ended up but think some were in private halls away from the main campus/college accommodation ….its crazy!!

Fruitygal · 01/02/2022 12:07

@NinaProudman2022 some of the Durham students were given money to delay until this year - not widely publicised but happened to a friends child and 2 of girls year above at DDs school

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 01/02/2022 12:52

My dd is in Year 13 and is receiving offers from the unis she applied to.

When does she have to book accommodation? Is there a website I can visit that will tell me this? Or just looking at the Uni website? Is there anything else I need to do as parent eg sort out money?

When will a Uni want to know how a student is being funded?

Thanks for any help.

I think the uni will send a email regarding applying for accommodation. We haven’t heard anything yet, just had one email about offer holder days at one uni. Dd is still waiting to hear from 2 of her choices.

I don’t understand why people need to apply for accommodation until a place is conformed?

I’m stressing about it as dd has mobility issues and dyspraxia so may need specific accommodation (no too many stairs and own bathroom f possible). I haven’t got a clue how we go about sorting accommodation 😬.

Linneasweet · 01/02/2022 13:21

We only had one uni so far telling us about the accommodation, York but I agree with you all: it's to much with mocks, stresses, applications and now this.

MarchingFrogs · 01/02/2022 13:29

Student finance info is here:
www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login

Applications are now open foe 2022/23 - the applicant (the student, it's their loan, not the parents') can start the application without having decided on the actual university, as no money is handed over to the institution or the student until their enrolment has been confirmed.

Re accommodation, how a specific university handles the process will be detailed on its website. Some ask only firm offer holders to book / register for accommodation, others (e.g.Sussex) ask both firm and insurance offer holders to do so.

Re the possible need for a specific type of accommodation, this would normally need to be declared in the accommodation application and the student should get in touch with the university's disability services team. I would assume that some kind of evidence would need to be provided

NinaProudman2022 · 01/02/2022 15:59

Yes, @Fruitygal I have heard about Durham and possibly other Uni’s offering last years students generous financial incentives to defer and they were still massively oversubscribed even with this. Thus, increasing the competition at top Uni’s again this year. I know of three students at DS’s school with excellent GCSE’s mostly 9’s, studying 4 A levels plus EPQ with 4 predicted A*’s and an A grade at A level and between them they have each received two rejections each this year. Admittedly one was Oxbridge for each of them and the other rejections were from Edinburgh and Warwick. So the competition at top Uni’s must be intense again this year and will have a knock on effect for other Uni’s too I would imagine.

DS really enjoying History at Durham, the quality of f2f & modules on offer have been great! He's having to work though!

My godchild has straight 9s at gcse and is predicted 3 a*s at A Level. She has excellent extra curricular activities, relevant work experience for her desired course and is head girl. 3 rejections so far..
