Can we stay a new thread? I'm on a few higher education threads but these seem to have people starting this term and I'd really appreciate support and advice specific to applications for starting next September.

Can I join please ? DS applying for Maths and UCAS form is in with Exeter and Bath, just in case Exeter decide to do any early offers. TMUA next week so he’ll decide on the rest once he gets the results for that.

Think predicted grades are A*AA but not quite sure.

DrunkenUnicorn · 28/10/2021 15:31

@Fruitygal I did try and persuade DS to do an EPQ when he had the chance in y12 and he wasn’t having it!

We’ll see how hull goes this weekend and then try and make plans to knock it down to 5.

Piggywaspushed · 28/10/2021 17:05

Aber and Hull are AMAZING for politics unicorn. We went to offer holder days for both and they were so welcoming.

Piggywaspushed · 28/10/2021 17:07

Aberystwyth is one hell of a journey, though....

DrunkenUnicorn · 28/10/2021 18:23

That’s so encouraging to know, @Piggywaspushed Hull is his favourite (second Cardiff) just from the website/prospectuses.

Yes, I’ve heard great things about aber…. But it’s nigh on 5 hours… Confused We are currently signed up to their open day on the 6th.

DrunkenUnicorn · 28/10/2021 18:25

Where did your DC choose to go, if you don’t mind my asking, @Piggywaspushed?

Piggywaspushed · 28/10/2021 18:28

He is at Lincoln. Had offer from Aber but he didn't like the town or the journey. Hull's offer was too high for him really and he got an unconditional from Lincoln so chose that. Lovely accommodation at Hull and excellent value for money!

Fruitygal · 28/10/2021 19:29

We lloved Lincoln uni on an open day (plus I loved all the independent shops on the hill @Piggywaspushed I’m so jealous) but DS2 potential course did not tick the boxes for him so went elsewhere 😢but 4 of DS1 friends went there for computing based courses and loved it did really well and all got great jobs on graduation. @DrunkenUnicornDS1 reminds me his school friend went and did astrophysics at Hull and loved it! My DS1 loved Cardiff (and so did we) for geology 🪨 but they didn’t offer 😢 (it was a little aspirational for him). I’m a bit sad we have finished with open days after 3 DCs …. Still hopefully have an offer day or two ….

Benjispruce4 · 29/10/2021 16:23

Just on way back from a couple of days in York. Loved the uni tour by app. Sociology is at Heslington West @Piggywaspushed and DD liked the feel of the place. Was mainly outside but were allowed in some seminar buildings. Was good to see it with the students about as opposed to usual open days.

Benjispruce4 · 29/10/2021 16:26

We hope to get to Bath at some point too. Interesting that Bath wants AAB and York AAB given that York is Russell group.

Benjispruce4 · 29/10/2021 16:26

York ABB rather.

Fruitygal · 29/10/2021 19:03

@Benjispruce4 Bath uni is one of the top unis in the league tables and like Lancaster and other non RG top performers can request some stretching grade offers. Much depends on a unis specialities in terms of teaching so some York courses require AAA but most are AAB or ABB. We loved York and new accommodation being built so DD was excited about modern self catered colleges on East. Where else is DD looking?

Benjispruce4 · 29/10/2021 19:16

Hi @Fruitygal thanks for your reply. I had always thought Bath was RG as DD1 was interested at one point. DD2 is also considering Manchester and Lancaster and Exeter.

Tagcurious · 29/10/2021 19:53

I don’t under why Hull isn’t more popular with students. It’s a great university. I think they suffer from competing with big cities like Manchester and Leeds but I have only ever heard brilliant things about it.

Benjispruce4 · 29/10/2021 20:14

Hull-0 London-4 is what comes to mind. Must be my age but I loved The Housemartins! Not considered Hull uni. Off to investigate.

OrangeBlossom28 · 29/10/2021 20:17

We're off to Reading Uni for the second open day there after going in the summer and DD2 really liking it. Tomorrow we can go to a course talk and see the accommodation.

Fruitygal · 29/10/2021 20:20

@Benjispruce4 nice selection of unis ! We have Lancaster as well as York and Exeter Penryn on the form. Loved the Housemartins reference ! Never got to Hull with DS1 when it was on the long list as serious family accident got in the way - maybe one day !

Benjispruce4 · 29/10/2021 20:38

@OrangeBlossom28 a friend’s DD just graduated from Reading (Biology) and she loved it.

beenrumbled · 29/10/2021 20:38

DD1 has settled on Lancaster and Sheffield. Both want AAB for her course so she is looking at insurance options. Manchester only wants ABB but she feels this is not enough of a drop to be a true insurance so she is looking around. She is doing an EPQ so that may help as she really wants Lancaster.

OrangeBlossom28 · 29/10/2021 20:41

When DD1 was looking at universities, Hull was offering a £100 incentive to attend an open day of you lived over 100 miles from there! We didn't go as she preferred other places for Geography.

Hello!
DD Year 13
Early entry in to Oxford for classics. Predicted AAA*
Has offers in already from Birmingham ABB (though if gets an A in EPQ and firms her offer then BB)
Also Cardiff ABB and Exeter BBB

Though obviously waiting on HAT and interview at Oxford before thinking further!

OrangeBlossom28 · 30/10/2021 17:19

We've had a great day today at Reading's open day. The course director was great and the modules are really interesting to DD2.
We looked inside some of the accommodation and had another walk around, then went to the city centre to get a feel for Reading.
Hopefully it will be her firm choice, offer dependent.

Stillgoings · 30/10/2021 17:59

Hi, joining in, my son is in year 13 he is predicted AAA* and is wanting to do maths and computer science at York, Liverpool, Leeds or Heriot Watt. He has just finished his personal statement and we are off to look round (the outside of) Liverpool tomorrow. He did an epq but not in a related subject and got a C so we have decided not to mention it

Piggywaspushed · 30/10/2021 18:09

Well, I am all for someone who can spell Heriot!! Keep biting my tongue...
