Can we stay a new thread? I'm on a few higher education threads but these seem to have people starting this term and I'd really appreciate support and advice specific to applications for starting next September.

@Benjispruce4 what's your dd studying at Durham?

Benjispruce4 · 21/10/2021 21:46

Hi, she’s studying Anthropology.

Tagcurious · 21/10/2021 22:22

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango DS also didn’t feel Durham was for him, both in terms of the course and the city.

Piggywaspushed · 22/10/2021 06:53

Hi benji . Hope you are well!

DS2 wants to do social policy or a combined degree including sociology and does v similar A Levels.

We have York too, and Birmingham (and Cambridge as v long shot) , discounted Bristol . Still undecided about others but have looked at Exeter (probably too far), Glasgow, and Edinburgh (sadly, ditto) and are visiting Sheffield and Bath this week. Struggling a bit with anywhere below ABB ballpark tbh! Have you considered Sheffield or Bath? Both very good for social sciences.

We ruled out Durham , too. Its sociology course is OK, but nothing exciting, and its combined social sciences is at same grades as Cambridge.

Piggywaspushed · 22/10/2021 06:54

Oh, and also Leeds keeps going in and out of the mix. It did an awful virtual open day which rather affected its chances!

Piggywaspushed · 22/10/2021 07:39

Oh, also benji, Lancaster is good for sociology.

stoneysongs · 22/10/2021 09:06

Hello, I'd like to join - DS looking at neuroscience. Favourite is currently Nottingham with Exeter and possibly QMUL and Sussex (visiting those next week). Fifth choice probably Warwick, Birmingham or Bristol. Wading through treacle at the moment with the UCAS form but I'm sure it will be submitted eventually!

I am biased but York has a longstanding reputation for politics (and is closer than Bath to you!)

But free tuition...

motherstongue · 22/10/2021 09:54

@Eightytwenty. My DS is currently at Warwick doing his Masters (we are also in Scotland) and he read History and Politics as an undergrad there too. He loved/loves it so much. He ultimately preferred the History department over Politics which came as a surprise as he has loved Politics since a 12 year old! Anyway, he would strongly recommend the course. He also had an extremely busy social life. 😁

Hi @Piggywaspushed! Thanks.Apparently it’s York, Manchester , Exeter and ??. We looked at Exeter for DD1 and liked the city but it’s so far. Bath was on the list but she’s not sure if Bath is too quiet as a city. Will look at Lancaster. A teacher colleague went there and loved it though that was a couple of decades ago!

Benjispruce4 · 22/10/2021 18:17

DD tells me her predicted grades after October assessment are A, A, A now but mocks in January.

Benjispruce4 · 22/10/2021 18:19

Also, re York, do they apply for a college? Or is that later? Just a bit concerned that sociology is at East Campus which looks a bus ride away from the city. Perhaps DD1 was spoilt in Durham where everything is in walking distance.

Piggywaspushed · 22/10/2021 19:34

The college bit comes later.

We visited York a while back and I was surprised by how much further East Campus was form the original campus but it's not far to Fulford and onwards t town really. Nowhere is genuinely far in York, really.

I thought sociology was on West campus mind!

Benjispruce4 · 22/10/2021 20:38

Oh I may be mistaken. Thanks it’s good to know. We are taking a trip up this week.

Chewbecca · 23/10/2021 20:55

May I join? DH and I didn’t go to Uni so it’s a bit new but I have read loads! DS is working on his PS over half term, planning to submit to school after then.

DS is doing Economics, English Lit and Biology A levels and predicted A*, A, B. Bit disappointed at the B predication, he was hoping for an A but they are non negotiable apparently.

He applying for BAs in Economics at St Andrews, Loughborough, Manchester and Birmingham and Politics and Economics and Nottingham.

The St A app is ambitious and he knows he is likely get a straight reject, but he really liked it there when we went for a look around, he doesn’t really have a ‘safe’ option but is basically saying he will fish for offers at top Unis and rely on clearing if he misses his grades.

I’m especially interested to find out how quickly people receive their offers.

Fruitygal · 23/10/2021 23:29

@Chewbecca Hi! My DD looking to go this year but we’ve had DS1 and DS2 already through the process so it really helps. In terms of when offers come in. Birmingham/Nottingham often offer quickly but I believe offers maybe later some even in March. With economics make sure he’s checked the GCSE maths requirements and that he’s made the grade. Some ask for a 6 or 7 and if he has not met the grade instant rejection. Others may expect Maths A level and also will reject without this. Not sure about these unis. Read up on contextual offers my DS1 got two unis who reduced offers due to postcode of sixth form. Does he have a uni as a favourite other than st Andrews?

Fruitygal · 23/10/2021 23:36

@Chewbecca not sure if you’ve found Discover Uni on your reading travels. Love it as it shows you what students actually got A levels wise who got a place on the courses. Sent you the link here discoveruni.gov.uk/course-details/10007803/USHFECNSECN/FullTime/

MarchingFrogs · 24/10/2021 07:07

@Eightytwenty, does your DS not fancy Edinburgh? Combines RG and no tuition fees.

@Chewbecca your ds may also be eligible for contextual offer on the basis that neither parent went to uni.

I've been looking at this and can't find any that offer contextual just for parents not attending Uni - it seems to sometimes however be combined with postcode etc though.

Given that c 30% of students these days have parents that didn't go to uni it's not so much a thing now.

readsalotgirl63 · 24/10/2021 09:09

Glasgow is also RG
