Can we stay a new thread? I'm on a few higher education threads but these seem to have people starting this term and I'd really appreciate support and advice specific to applications for starting next September.

the school agreed to significantly increase his predicted grades (beyond what he is likely to get) to give him the best chance of an offer

The school is just reducing its credibility- Unis won't trust their predictions in future years.

And the student may end up struggling at Uni.

Well, I’m glad I wrote this as it gave me the impetus to chat to DS this morning and suggest he had one more go.

He went to the teacher in question and he confirmed he would predict an A* if asked today. But didn’t have the power / admin ability to change it. Told him who to ask. Got passed on then to three different teachers who each said they weren’t able to do it, process-wise. Final teacher said Yes, I can do that if your teacher confirms it - wrote an email on the spot and said as soon as teacher confirms, it will be updated!

So persistence needed but hopefully he has achieved getting it changed and he will be submitting his app when (hopefully not if) it comes through.

So annoying that there was no quibble it was the right grade, purely an administrative/ process issue.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Afternoon. So the UCAS application has been submitted - eek! So the finance side begins.

  • When do you apply for loans?
Stupid question - can you still stay in student accommodation even if one of the uni’s chosen is local? DD would still like to give the ‘student life’ a go if she chose that one. And, the maintenance loan you can apply for - is that amount awarded for the whole three years or do you apply for it every year? Sorry I’m so clueless Blush
NCTDN · 19/11/2021 16:16

I wasn't thinking about finance until way into next year...

@MrsWicket normally you don’t apply until yourDCs have firmed their top two choices.

You can stay in accommodation if you live close to uni. Main things to consider at this stage are:

  1. is your student child getting a full loan for living or do you need to top it up? Details on student finance pages or Martin Lewis the money guy is quite good at going through it online.

  2. does your child need to apply for DSA - are they dyslexic etc

  3. When are you doing the IKEA shop ? Smile

The tuition fees everyone gets paid but the maintenance loan to pay for accommodation and expenses like food and going out is means tested - if your household income is above £58500 ish then you get the minimum. Which is about £3500-4500 per year. So parents are expected to top up to cover things.

If applying from a home address in England, studying outside London and living away from home (the details vary for the other home nations' systems / living and studying combinations), the household income threshold for the means tested portion of the maintenance loan is actually somewhere above £60 000 p.a. Playing around with the student loan calculator puts it somewhere between £62 000 and £62 500 for 2021/2022.

The calculator is here

So DD2 has paid and her school now need to do their bit and then we wait. Exciting! It doesn't seem two years since we were going through this with DD1. How time flies...so much has happened in this time it's crazy.

Chewbecca · 26/11/2021 18:33

Update on an earlier post I made - DS's predicted grade has finally been updated! Admin nightmare but no quibbling about the grade.
He will hit send on his application this weekend now (1 final read of the PS), then waiting begins.

Can anyone advise - will he know when school have added their bit and submitted it - will he get an email or something? I know he won't see the content.

OrangeBlossom28 · 26/11/2021 21:16

You get an email from UCAS track confirming your choices and saying that it's been sent to those unis.
