Can we stay a new thread? I'm on a few higher education threads but these seem to have people starting this term and I'd really appreciate support and advice specific to applications for starting next September.

Hi OP I'm in. Ds currently year 13 and preparing his personal statement. He would like to study mathematics and astrophysics. On target to get straight As not A*s in maths physics and economics. Thinking about deferring to 2023 because he /we don't feel ready Hmm ( Summer born and struggled through lockdown etc)

Dnadoon · 26/09/2021 20:30

I personally would like him to go in Sept 2022 I think. Confused

pinkmeeple · 26/09/2021 20:40

Evening. My dd is in year 13, planning to apply for Maths for September 2022. It feels very close all of sudden!

nodtik · 26/09/2021 20:49

Child in year 13

Looking for September 2022

Geography

Predicted AAB

A achieved in EPQ this summer

It's come around very quickly!

NCTDN · 27/09/2021 07:23

DD hasn't got her predicted grades yet!

OP posts:
NCTDN · 27/09/2021 07:24

Do you know if colleges predict A* or do they just say A?

OP posts:
Gizmo98765 · 27/09/2021 07:36

Following on the format of @nodtik

DS in year 13

Looking for September 2022

Keen on Nat Science/Physics/Maths

Predicted AAA*A

A* in EPQ.

Interested in Cambridge, Durham and unsure of other choices.

Says he will finalise his Personal statement this week. Although still hasn’t submitted his DOE bronze info yet!!

beenrumbled · 27/09/2021 07:49

DD applying too. It's come round so quickly, especially as DS1 has just started his degree this year - he took a gap year.

Wants Sheffield or Lancaster for English Language & Linguistics. Needs AAB. So may be under a bit of pressure as her Maths is struggling (her whole class are).

She loved both Universities on Open day this month, but on balance prefers Lancaster I think.

Manchester may be an insurance - ABB

She is doing an EPQ this year too.

Champagnecharleyismyname · 27/09/2021 07:50

DD is looking to do Biology after deciding medicine not for her. She's doing Biology, Chemistry and English at A level.

Currently narrowing down her 5 choices and doing her personal statement.

nodtik · 27/09/2021 08:26

Universities for consideration currently;

Birmingham
Portsmouth
Leeds
Leicester
Royal Holloway

pinkmeeple · 27/09/2021 09:04

Dd hasn't had any predicted grades yet either. She did really well in some recent mocks though, she got A* in all of the Maths papers she did and in the Psychology paper she's had the mark for. Still waiting for another Psychology result and English language (her poorest subject and she may actually drop it after she gets her uni offers if they aren't dependent on it). They're not doing mocks in Further Maths until after Christmas I think.

University wise her current choices are looking to be
St Andrews (but we're being realistic about her chances)
Lancaster
then probably
Edinburgh
Stirling
and one other yet to be decided.

We've only visited St Andrews and Lancaster, neither were official open days but she loved both.

She's planning to do some work on her personal statement this week.

Linneasweet · 27/09/2021 21:53

Hi all, DD in year 13 here, want to sociology & political sciences in either York, Southampton, Belfast or Bath. I got to say it's all a bit of a minefield: I have now accepted that our finances will take a major hit (earning total of 70k a year but renting in London which eats the majority of that up!) But it's the fact that due to that one of the unis don't open their application process until January and therefore she can't apply for any of them which gets me: surely the kids are stressed enough like it is without having to worry about uni applications while studying for their A-levels?it just seems such a waste to me.

MarchingFrogs · 28/09/2021 07:06

@Linneasweet, why does also applying to a university with a different application process prevent your DD from applying to the other four through UCAS now?

Therunecaster · 28/09/2021 07:25

Daughter year 13 doing psychology, Biology and Geography. Predictiated AAA wants to to Psychology degree at Durham, Newcastle or Northumbria.

RampantIvy · 28/09/2021 07:32

@Linneasweet your DD can apply to the four universities that accept applications now, and the fifth one when applications open. She doesn't have to apply to all five at the same time.

ErgonomicallyUnsound · 28/09/2021 11:43

Can I join? DS predicted AAB. Probs interested in management.

How many choices should he pick that are AAB? Seeing so much conflicting advice.

Given that there are 34,000 places on business / mgmt courses in 2022, and many lower grade entry ones in clearing I'm thinking more AAB choices but then reading about unis being worried about inflated grades again will they make offers to those who are predicted "only" the entry requirements?

NCTDN · 28/09/2021 17:53

@ErgonomicallyUnsound how do you know how many places there are altogether? I'd love that information.

OP posts:
ErgonomicallyUnsound · 28/09/2021 17:54

It said in the Times university guide 2022 under business and management.

Lennybenny · 28/09/2021 17:55

Oooh I like this! Ds is also Y13 and planning Uni next year. I have no idea what I'm doing!

ErgonomicallyUnsound · 28/09/2021 17:57

Should read 334,000!!!!

GetItDone78 · 29/09/2021 10:42

Hello,

I have a DS in Year 13 wanting to study Classical Studies or Archaeology. We did a few open days during the summer and current favourites are:
UCL
Kings
Royal Holloway
Kent
Hoping to visit Bristol too at some point.

Still ploughing through the PS. Currently feel as though I’m a lot more invested in the application process than he is 😕

DonegalGhirl · 29/09/2021 14:34

Hi, can I join please?

DD in 6th year (Scotland), already has A passes in Maths, English, Chemistry, Italian & Graphic Communication. Sitting another 3 Highers & an Advanced Higher this year.

She would like to study Architecture so with 5 A’s in the bag she’s met the course requirements, she also attends a LEAPS school (increases progression for students who are traditionally under represented), so will have additional UCAS points added, so it’ll all come down to her Personal Statement. Thankfully she’ll get plenty help with this from the fantastic teachers in her school as I wouldn’t know where to start with it.

Preferred Uni’s are either Edinburgh or Strathclyde, but will also apply to Dundee, Robert Gordon & Bath Hmm. The latter is just to see if she gets an offer but has no intention of accepting it, she must study at a Scottish University to qualify for free tuition.

Fingers crossed it all works out & good luck to everyone else who has kids applying for Uni places in 2022 Smile.

tryingmybest13 · 29/09/2021 14:54

Hi all

DS in year 13. No predicted grades as yet - had Covid last Xmas and that, plus other stuff, meant really low attendance. Did great at GCSE level, so awaiting predictions. He is doing Maths, Physics and Politics (did Spanish, and now dropped). He is keen on Archaeology. he is starting to look at unis: likes Cardiff and Bangor, thus far

I teach at a uni, so fairly relaxed about it all.

doubleshotcappuccino · 29/09/2021 17:01

Lovely thanks ! - just what I need .. I've been lurking on the this years Uni pages but keen to be int be right place . DD Yr13 - the pressure is slowly mounting like cranking up the side of a roller coaster ..
