@chopc I've heard that too! Love that crate.

@Stillcrikey love that! Is he a keen organist? (Again not a euphemism Grin)

Successful haul from
IKEA today, still a few things on my list to get however. Hard to know how to ensure they have what they need without overpacking- will probably fail and send far too much stuff!!

Vargas · 13/08/2021 23:35

Hi all, have just skimmed thread, so pleased to hear everyone’s great results. Ds was a Cambridge redirection and thankfully has a place at his (post Oxbridge) first choice - Durham for Geography. He had been allocated Hatfield college, not his first choice, but looks like we’re waiting until next week to find out for sure…

I’m super keen to have a look at Durham but might not happen until drop off, does anyone know moving in dates yet? Sorry I’m a newbie at the whole UK uni scene!

Stillcrikey · 13/08/2021 23:36

He’s a jazz pianist (just got his grade 8, which we are mega chuffed about). But I’m happy he has something to take with him cos he really uses playing to relax when stressed. This ‘organ’ can be played silently with headphones so hopefully won’t annoy the neighbours.
Also, he reckons he can get a job playing in a swanky cocktail bar - he said he’d rather be able to earn money sitting down 🤣

Pumpkintopf · 13/08/2021 23:44

@Stillcrikey that would be fab wouldn't it? Congratulations to him on the grade 8!

@Vargas plenty of Durham parents on the thread who I'm sure can advise on moving dates.

chopc · 14/08/2021 07:20

I posted on the Durham thread and not here by mistake

@Pumpkintopf DH thinks the beer crate is a bit naff

I wouldn't worry about buying loads of stuff because Amazon for example delivers next day and there is always mybaggage.com

@Vargas was wondering how your DS got on. Durham freshers starts on 27th so i am assuming we drop off the weekend before and I am hoping there won't be a staggered drop off.

Vargas · 14/08/2021 08:33

Thanks @chopc! My DH is inconveniently planning a lads' holiday for September and trying to figure out when he is needed for ds' Uni drop off.... Hmm

@Vargas congratulations on joining the Durham parent crew. Term dates for the next several years are here so you can plan www.dur.ac.uk/dates/ and Freshers week starts Monday 27th September. I am assuming they move in the weekend of 25th/26th. Jack Edwards (previous Durham student who vlogged his life there) moved in on the Sunday but that was pre-covid.

This is the what to do before you come thing from Durham if needed www.dur.ac.uk/experience/welcome/arrive/

Once they know their college they can register with the GP there online. Check their vaccinations, they want MenC which they should have had in school in year 9 and the usual 2 dose MMR.

Ds showed me the "planner" from Durham which if you put your college and course in gives you some of the events for fresher's week and which day they matriculate on. [[www.dur.ac.uk/experience/welcome/planner/

We are waiting on shopping until Ds knows his college next week. Dh has taken lots of Fridays and Mondays off in August so he can have long weekends so he can come shopping too.

BigWoollyJumpers · 14/08/2021 09:55

Once they know their college they can register with the GP there online

For those that don't know, this means they are de-registered at their home GP. From personal experience, we will not be registering DD2 at the uni GP, but continue with our local one. Students always have access to medical centres anyway, and a lot can be done on-line now. DD1 had terrible trouble just getting her pills when she was back home, despite being at home for the majority of the year, they tried to insist she see her uni GP as that was were she was registered. They were always really huffy when she tried to see them whilst here. She has since gone to an on-line GP for all her prescriptions.

Vargas · 14/08/2021 10:45

@OnTheBenchOfDoom Thanks so much! That is all really useful. I am also planning to wait to do any shopping until we know which college. I have had a look and he had DTP + Meningitis ACWY in year 9 and has had two doses of MMR so that should be fine. I wonder if they will insist all the students have double Covid jabs? He can't have his second Covid vaccination until early September so that should be fine...

@BigWoollyJumpers A friend with an older ds who has a medical condition has kept her son registered at home GP for the same reason. It is something I need to look into a bit more, but thankfully my ds doesn't need to see a GP regularly. I am assuming if he gets a sports injury (most likely reason for him to need to see a GP!), he will be able to go to the Uni medical centre, whether he is registered there or not...

Vargas · 14/08/2021 10:54

Had to look up what 'matriculate' meant. Grin

Pumpkintopf · 14/08/2021 11:12

How do you look up their jabs to check what they've had? Am assuming DS has had Men as we always signed him up for whatever came home from school, but would like to be sure.

Peaseblossum22 · 14/08/2021 11:24

I really hope they can matriculate in person . It’s just a small thing but I remember it so well , that feeling of ‘I’m actually here’!

Ds favourite sixth form suit us blue , I assume that will be ok for matric , or does it need to be darker

chopc · 14/08/2021 11:46

@Pumpkintopf I suppose you no longer have his red book? Most should be there apart from the ones he had at school unless you have put it in yourself

I told DS to get the Men B jab as well. You need to have two a month apart and it can only be done privately. However as he will be so far away from home I will feel easier if he has it

OP posts:
chopc · 14/08/2021 11:47

@Peaseblossum22 no excuse for them not to have any of those essential things in person

Peaseblossum22 · 14/08/2021 12:01

I don’t know I think I would understand if they didn’t want 900 people inside the Cathedral all at once from different colleges and only just arrived from all over the country. I think I saw someone post that it might be done in smaller groups .

My dc used to love the story that dh and I were at opposite ends of the Cathedral on the same day and 30 years later here we are married with 3ds and one going to Durham as well.

Majaso12 · 14/08/2021 12:13

Dd had the meningitis ACWY vaccine in school in 2017. She had the meningitis B vaccine in 2019 I think it was, but we had to pay for that one as it’s not done routinely.

Pumpkintopf · 14/08/2021 12:27

Ah interesting. Thanks chopc I do have his red book but the school stuff won't be in there - I guess his GP will have the details on his medical records though. Didn't know there was an option to have Men B - might look into that then as still time for him to get it done given he's not leaving until 2nd October. He's got his second covid jab this week.

@Peaseblossum22 that's a lovely story 😊

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 14/08/2021 12:31

@Pumpkintopf MMR stuff is in their red health book, we had a letter from school in yr 9 confirming their jabs.

@Vargas if you haven't already watched it Jack Edwards on YouTube search his name and matriculation and it is his whole moving to Durham, Freshers, matriculation etc. You can see what they all wear. DS is planning to buy a dark blue suit for uni.

@BigWoollyJumpers sorry, I worked at the health authority so I just assume everyone knows about registering for GP surgeries. Yes you can only be registered with one. Your home GP surgery should have provided the medication for your DD but if it is for over 14 days they have to register as a temporary resident or permanent patient hence why they were possibly being an arse. By the same token of your surgery being an arse, Durham could be the same if you stay registered at your home address and require treatment longer than 14 days. It is always advised to register at the university as you are usually there more weeks in a year than home.

calculatorqueen · 14/08/2021 13:20

@Pumpkintopf Before eldest DS went off to Uni I asked the GP to provide me with a printout of all his vaccinations. None of his Men ACWY were on it. I naively presumed that any jabs given at school would be updated at the GP end but this is not always the case. There were also other errors on there. So we managed to get the GP list correctly updated using information that I had in his red book. It was far easier to get it sorted, whilst I was able to assist, rather than letting him sort it at uni. I know of other friends at Uni that the Uni GP insisted that they should have the ACWY at Uni when they had already had it. So best to get everything up to date before you go.

chopc · 14/08/2021 13:58

@Peaseblossum22 I love that story! In fact when DS was rejected from Cambridge I consoled myself that Durham has the highest rates of students meeting and marrying !

My twins who are older registered with the university Bristol GP but it was a nuisance as in holidays (the only time they had for appointments) they were not registered with the G at home and one of mine has just had to do a ton of paperwork having just left Bristol to get re-registered with our home GP and nearly didn't make it was they were trying to say the boundaries had changed.

Pumpkintopf · 14/08/2021 14:52

@calculatorqueen interesting!! I will definitely look into that, thank you!

Peaseblossum22 · 14/08/2021 15:20

I also just asked the GP got a print out .
