It depends on the university.

Longtimenewsee · 25/04/2021 09:01

Ah ok .,thanks @MarchingFrogs

Is anyone else still waiting to hear from St Andrews?
DD still hasn’t heard from them.
It would have been her top choice in the U.K.

She is going to commit to a college in the US so it doesn’t matter at this stage.

jano69 · 25/04/2021 14:42

Hello all, DD is still waiting to hear from St Andrews and Edinburgh @ChimneyPot for history. She'll insure with St Andrews if she gets an AAA offer.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 25/04/2021 15:30

Yes still waiting here for St Andrews. History & MFL.

321zyx · 26/04/2021 07:52

DS still waiting for St Andrews and Edinburgh.

bendmeoverbackwards · 26/04/2021 14:45

Gosh what a long wait for St Andrews, I thought Durham and LSE were bad enough! Fingers crossed offers come soon to those waiting.

quest1on · 26/04/2021 16:48

I can’t believe these Scottish unis are taking so long! Is it something to do with post Brexit quotas, or is it always like this?

I watched a student-filmed “Welcome to St John’s” video on YouTube the other day and can’t say I was impressed if the 4 or 5 boys who filmed this are representative of the college. Highlights included such “jolly japes” as visiting the library to take out books on porn and “interviewing” a girl while filming her breasts. These “hilarious” videos do Durham no favours. I’m trying to tell myself they can’t all be like this. Please!

Justanotherday3 · 26/04/2021 17:32

@quest1on

I certainly hope not....my DS would have no friends at all come September...☹️

@quest1on - there must be others from your DS's school going to Durham?

I think there are all kinds of people everywhere and each person will hopefully find their tribe .......

OP posts:
LoonvanBoon · 26/04/2021 20:23

I haven't watched the video but don't think there should be room for that kind of behaviour anywhere (filming a girl's breasts during an open day??). Definitely don't think it's an issue about finding your tribe; any tribes like that affect the experience of all young women in universities, for one thing.

I'm sure people like that must be a minority though. I hardly came across any men like that at Oxford in the late 1980s/early 90s - unless there's been a resurgence! And tbf my two have told me of casually misogynistic comments made by other boys at their comprehensive school, so I don't think it's just an elite universities issue either.

goodbyestranger · 26/04/2021 20:25

I know you're not being serious jano69 but honestly, I've just spent my supper cooking time with these St John's you tube videos on on the table in front of me and I dare you 40/50/60 somethings to say that if you looked back at yourself as a nineteen year old, you did nothing that wasn't cringy to your older self. Young people should be allowed to have a bit of fun without this stentorian censure. Lighten up people! Silly yes, cringy yes - but they're only kids having fun.

goodbyestranger · 26/04/2021 20:27
  • Caveat: I didn't get to any boob bit. What I did see what a bit silly but just basically a group of young people having fun making a video that they thought was fun. Probably not aimed at serious middle aged matrons.
goodbyestranger · 26/04/2021 20:34

jano69 I hope that MN will remove your post. I've reported it on that grounds that it seems pretty abhorrent to link to a young person's professional profile when his only crime appears to be making a fairly puerile video while at uni. Shame on you - I'm surprised.

LoonvanBoon · 26/04/2021 20:46

Maybe he should have removed his 'puerile' video if he didn't want it to reflect badly on his professional image? He hasn't exactly got a common name, so presumably anyone could make the link quite easily!

LoonvanBoon · 26/04/2021 20:53

And I haven't watched any of the video, so was just going on the description here. But if there is a bit where a young man is pretending to interview a young woman while filming her breasts, I suppose it's relevant whether or not she's in on the 'joke': if she is, that might qualify as just puerile. If she's not, then it sounds incredibly offensive and I don't think you have to be a 'serious middle aged matron' to take that view.

SeasonFinale · 26/04/2021 20:54

There are Edinburgh offers coming through this evening.

Please remember they were waiting for a funding decision which came through near the end of March and have indicated they hope to get offers through by the end of April ie. by Friday.

LoonvanBoon · 26/04/2021 20:55

I really don't want to have to watch the video to find out ...

goodbyestranger · 26/04/2021 21:04

LoonvanBoon I'll go back and watch it to examine Boobgate forensically. I'm prepared to bet the girl was fully consenting and that we have a case of over solicitous matronly censure here.

When I was in the City in the Eighties I contended daily with words and actions which today be censured in that way. The perpetrators are now the fathers and grandfathers of these young aspirational men at Durham and other top unis, so it might be worth giving pause for thought since plenty of women on MN will be of the generation where their husbands will have been as louche as could be, in their high flying City jobs two or three decades ago.

jano69 · 26/04/2021 21:04

I wasn't being in the slightest bit serious!

It wasn't a disastrous you tube video by any means although I can safely say it wasn't a Durham approved open day video.

I guess I was slightly amused that someone who came across quite childish 9 years ago is clearly doing very well in his chosen career.

Thanks @SeasonFinale - DD is waiting for news from Edinburgh so I'll let her know.

quest1on · 26/04/2021 21:05

goodbye - you can refer to me as a “matron” all you like, but this is not about me.

DS’ school, like many others, has recently been in the press for exactly this kind of male, entitled behaviour. Yes, it’s only a minority but, very unfortunately for everyone else, it’s a loud minority.

If that boy didn’t want that video linked to his profile then he should have taken it down himself. I have no time for this type of entitled moron at any age.

goodbyestranger · 26/04/2021 21:06
  • I use the term perpetrators lightly, in the same way the I treated these men very lightly.
goodbyestranger · 26/04/2021 21:09

quest1on it is about you (in that you brought the video up, and censured it, which is why I watched it) and indeed about your intolerance for youth. I hope that your DH has covered himself with glory at all points of his life in terms of his attitude to women, and never faltered once. I can only assume that he has.
