Here is the new thread

Dd says that on the UCAS website Bristol's History course is showing as 'places available'. I don't know if that means they have sent out all their offers and not everyone has accepted, or if there are still applicants waiting to hear.

PresentingPercy · 03/04/2021 14:45

That’s very unusual for History at Bristol. The catered halls there have a collegiate feel. Wills and Churchill especially. Both in Stoke Bishop.

Bigfatsquirrel · 03/04/2021 20:17

@quest1on I have a DS at Bath (currently in his placement year). PM me if you have any questions.

321zyx · 03/04/2021 20:28

@quest1on as someone who went to Bath more years ago than I care to admit (!) I'm not sure you can compare Bath and LSE in terms of the student experience....it's so, so much more than the actual course. My final choice was to spend 3 years in Leeds or 3 years in Bath - no insult intended to the residents of Leeds but for me (not a party animal but enjoy a good pub) Bath won hands down Grin.

Happy Easter to all those celebrating!

Is it strange that I feel that some of you are "friends" albeit virtually and we don't even know each other's names? 🤔

Happy Easter to you too.

If our kids can have virtual friends, we can too!

quest1on · 04/04/2021 11:16

Happy Easter everyone!

Has anyone who hasn’t been able to visit a particular uni tour tried going on YouTube and searching for “walking tour of ...,, (insert city)? Yesterday, we watched a 25 min one of Bath which looks stunning (I was amazed how beautiful it is) and also one of Durham which also looks beautiful in a different way. I felt like I’d been on a mini- break afterwards (obviously need to get out of London more) Grin

Yes it is weird! But lovely though, I really appreciate the support on this thread.

Happy Easter everyone 🐣

MarchingFrogs · 04/04/2021 11:29

@quest1on, there are a couple of good ones of 'Cardiac Hill' in Exeter, complete with the video maker's increasingly laboured breathingGrin.

LoonvanBoon · 04/04/2021 11:52

Happy Easter everyone!

Pumpkintopf · 04/04/2021 21:27

Happy Easter everyone. I agree, I feel you are all friends although we haven't met - this thread has been a supportive lifeline. Hope everyone is having a lovely long weekend. 🐣

calculatorqueen · 05/04/2021 19:28

Hope everyone's had a lovely long weekend!

@quest1on DS has now applied for a campus tour at Bath, have you received the e mail? There are slots over the Easter hols but we're going at the end of May after the tests have finished. He says that he wants to go to uni but isn't showing a great deal of enthusiasm. He's had all his offers since the beginning of November, so the whole thing seems to have lost momentum. Still nothing from Exeter after they cancelled the campus tours for April, unless anyone else has heard anything, so it looks like that will be a DIY tour.

chopc · 05/04/2021 19:34

I was so exhausted when I finished work on Wed that I wish I had taken the time away from work to actually rest. Instead we have had many socials in the garden - as nice as they were, they have left me drained as I supposed trying to keep warm albeit fire pit/ patio heater and chimnea, take a lot of energy

Back to work tomorrow happy to have had a lovely break but still tired 🙈

OP posts:
Longtimenewsee · 05/04/2021 19:42

I know how you feel @chopc. We haven’t had any socials but have been trying to make the best of the sunshine and doing lots. Back to work tomorrow but feel like I could do with a few more days off!

quest1on · 05/04/2021 20:22

Hi calculator - Yes, he hadn’t told me anything about Bath dates, but I’m assuming he would also want to go in May when the tests are finished.

Bugfatsquirrel - thanks for the offer. I may welll have questions, but it’s all a bit up in the air.

We may also go to visit Durham potentially.

At the moment he has UCL (AAA Geog with international placement year); Durham (A*AA) and Bath (reduced offer of ABB for International Development and Economics with international placement year). If he was to get LSE that would be AAA.

All such different uni experiences it’s impossible to compare Confused.

chopc · 05/04/2021 20:51

@quest1on isn't the Bath offer for a different subject to Geography?

I think Durham also offers international placement year?

In order of ranking for Geography it is Durham, LSE, UCL but you would know that already.

I think ultimately if he is unsure of staying in London or going to either Durham or Bath, a visit certainly sounds like a great idea. I would personally encourage him to go to where he thinks he will enjoy living for three years as he will no doubt do well in his degree irrespective of which one he picks.

OP posts:
quest1on · 05/04/2021 21:40

Hi chopc - Bath don’t offer Geography, but that degree is basically human Geog with economics thrown in which he would do anyway (or take those sort of modules).

Is Durham higher ranked for Geog? I’m not sure. In the QS international rankings, LSE and UCL are higher (I think).

I get the impression UCL and LSE are more ‘international brands,’ Where Durham has a strong reputation in the U.K., I’m not sure so many are aware of it internationally? That could be just me though (listening to too many relatives in India and the US)!

fiveoldteddies · 05/04/2021 22:02

Seem here, relatives abroad Europe, know LSE and UCL but not Durham.

chopc · 05/04/2021 22:12

Agree with both. Our non British friends also think the same. However as DS plans to work in UK initially I don't think it matters because after they get a job, it doesn't matter what university you went to?

I was looking at the complete university guide rankings but yes in the QS rankings Durham not even in top 50 there in general university section

OP posts:
MidLifeCrisis007 · 06/04/2021 07:32

Gosh Warwick were good in University Challenge weren't they? And the deserved winners.

Rout excelled in all rounds, but it's possibly because they were such a balanced team, with all contestants contributing, that they did so well.

I shall really miss it on Monday evenings!

Longtimenewsee · 06/04/2021 07:50

Agree .. Warwick were a great team.

PresentingPercy · 06/04/2021 11:12

Well MC Cambridge had one team member who virtually answered nothing in the whole series. You cannot win with poor team selection. The questions were hugely science based - where was the Theology? The other outstanding team this year was Imperial. I think it was Kohn who was exceptional.

I'm missing Only Connect too!

When my DD was at boarding school, she always said the international students (and importantly parents) only recognised London universities and Oxbridge. I can rarely think of an international girl who did not go to a London university. I remember one of DD's friends from Singpaore did go to Durham, another did medicine at Sheffield and another Law at Bristol. The vast majority wanted London. So I really think it depends who does the rankings and what criteria they look at. I think that very many studfents get their first jobs here and then move aborad when established means the QS rankings mean less to initial employers if they are based here.

PresentingPercy · 06/04/2021 11:17

And this is a ranking where Leeds, Southampton, Sheffield and Birmingham all outrank St Andrews. And Edinburgh outranks nearly everywhere.

bendmeoverbackwards · 06/04/2021 12:13

Was it the final of UC?

I’m missing Unforgotten, anyone watch it? I’m re-watching season 1 on Netflix.

PresentingPercy · 06/04/2021 13:24

Yes. I'm not sure I miss it. Into Line of Duty now.
