@NotSorry that's not good. I hope you get it cleaned ok.

Ds's house in Norwich is empty. They all left a month or so ago to get on with summer jobs from their home town. The landlord has been going in mending things and cleaning. Ds has been back 3 times to get stuff he's forgotten, like his passport needed to show at work and his old work trainers, the landlord was pottering about each time either in the garden or indoors. I expect he likes receiving full rent with no one in the house! They'll all move back third week sept.

NotSorry · 13/08/2021 14:45

We’re done. Did as much as we could and had to leave them to it and hope they finish it. Moving him into new house now

CointreauVersial · 18/08/2021 13:26

Hello UEA peeps.....I haven't been doing much on MN for a while, but am delighted to see that this thread is still ticking along.

DD1 is now in Oklahoma, for her study abroad year! She arrived on Monday night, and is not back until the Christmas break. All sorts of Covid-related shenanigans before she left - she tested positive the day her shared house tenancy ended, after they all shared it around at a 21st party, so then she couldn't take the necessary PCRs for flying to the US....well, we got there eventually..... UEA did bring forward the jabs for the travelling students, which was good, but she had to delay her second one until 28 days after her positive test, so they needn't have bothered.

She's currently trying to sort out her class enrolments, but it looks like she won't be doing much Psychology this year, as the courses are mostly full. Has diversified into Human Geography, Sociology and Pilates (yes, really....). UEA not much help now she's there.

I think she will have a ball in the US, but is really looking forward to "normal" Norwich life in 2022-3, as she barely set foot on campus this last year.

Anyway, good to hear your DCs are surviving, and good luck to those hitting their final year (already!) and new shared houses.

What with A level results for DD2 last week, and months of planning for DD1's departure I am now a limp rag, and need a holiday. Pheeew.

sluj · 18/08/2021 18:39

Lots of moving in and on here! Congratulations to all the DC getting the grades they wanted.
DS2 was in Norfolk Terrace for year 1 and absolutely loved it @NotSorry

NotSorry · 18/08/2021 19:00

thanks @sluj - still waiting for accommodation offer - they've said by next Tuesday but my DS's other friends have all had their offers. It's very frustrating

boys3 · 19/08/2021 19:38

DD1 is now in Oklahoma - oooh that's exciting @CointreauVersial, Have to admit I had to check google maps to see exactly where Oklahoma was - vague guess was somewhere in the middle. And I now know it is just above the Dallas end of Texas.

boys3 · 19/08/2021 19:42

and I'm fully familiar with Dallas from the drink along with Dallas evenings I used to enjoy as a student.

Now that was a long time ago

Fab for your DD that she's in Oklahoma @CointreauVersial. Hope she's settling in well?

@MarchingFrogs great for your DS to get his preferred choice accommodation at UEA.

Good luck to your DSs @NotSorry and @boys3. Don't envy you the long trip to Aberystwyth @boys3 but what a picturesque place to be student! I have two friends who did their degrees there and both really enjoyed themselves.

Thanks @NewModelArmyMayhem18

Accommodation finally sorted for DS3 long boring story of lost applications but we got there in the end.

DS2 going back on 12th September as he's already moved into his house - DS3 leaving on 19th September. My house will be very quiet with just me, DH and DD left

I hope everyones DDs and DSs going into year 3 have a better year than the last year (it can't be worse...?!)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/09/2021 11:50

I hope everyones DDs and DSs going into year 3 have a better year than the last year (it can't be worse...?!) Let's hope it's massively better (but that they're not so busy making up for lost socialising time that they neglect their studies!). DS seemed to think that uptake of the 'in person' sessions offered for his subject towards the end of Yr 2 was patchy at best. It will be interesting to see how quickly the students readjust to going back on campus regularly.

Ds1 is still home working full time. He will keep working until a few days before he needs to be at UEA. He's had the blended learning email, he is hoping to get some lab time. He's only really had practicals Oct/nov/dec year 1. He did get a couple in late last year too. So frustrating. I hope year 3 is better.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/09/2021 08:42

Good for your DS1 @icanbewhatIwant.

Is it your DS who has the landlord who is always pottering around the student let? In some ways annoying. BUT it probably means the LL keeps on top of repairs etc., and the students aren't landed with losing a lot of their deposits.

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 03/09/2021 09:36

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 yes the landlord lives close by and is always turning up. The house has been empty of students since the beginning of July as they all have summer jobs in their home town. Ds2 has had a few driving lessons in Norwich, as that is where he took his test, so we've been using ds1's student house as a base for pick up. We've only been 3 times but there have been vehicles in the drive each time, either the land lord, cleaners or work men. Last time I went there were 4 vehicles. So he's been busy, I know it's been cleaned anyway and some rooms re decorated. I suppose he's liking getting full rent for an empty house.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/09/2021 09:45

It's kind of money for old rope, isn't it? The system is all wrong really when students are shoe-horned into year-long lets when they actually (mostly) would prefer 42 week ones (unless they're doing HCP type courses).

Don't envy you the long trip to Aberystwyth Grin Grin It certainly is quite a trek; we're not particularly near to Norwich but I could drive to Norwich and back, and a good way back again in the time it takes to get to Aber. On the upside accommodation there is really quite cheap, which is good as hotel or airbnb costs now need to be factored in for drop offs, visits etc. And the local hoteliers have certainly cottoned on to when the key term dates are.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 06/09/2021 07:24

And the local hoteliers have certainly cottoned on to when the key term dates are. Yes, I guess they're fine-tuned to make the most out of 'captive' parents. I saw on WIWIKAU page that someone had booked a B&B thinking it was close to Exeter (for a university drop-off) stay-over but it was actually in Wales!

Quite a contrast between the Welsh and East Anglian countryside too!

Our daughter got her grades and is off to UEA in a couple of weeks to study Economics and staying in Nelson Court.
Very exciting!

sluj · 07/09/2021 14:29

@allfurcoatandnoknickers
Congratulations to your daughter, she will love it !!

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 07/09/2021 14:40

That's great to hear - we've had lots of positive words about UEA and our son's gf has just finished there and loved it. She showed us round and sold it to our daughter!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/09/2021 14:41

@Allfurcoatandnoknickers congratulations to your DD.

boys3 · 07/09/2021 20:18

well done to yor DD @Allfurcoatandnoknickers

From what I gather at least three of DS3's friends off to UEA.

Meanwhile DS2 back to Norwich this weekend.

sluj · 08/09/2021 08:30

Dropped DS2 off at his 3rd year house at the weekend. The others had arrived earlier and it was already a tip but I have learnt not to over think that 😆
We didn't go on to the campus but I must admit I felt a pang as we passed the driveway to think this was our last year of UEA. Its 5 years since we dropped DS1 off there and I have loved visiting.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/09/2021 18:59

It's frightening how quickly time flies @sluj.
