Best of luck to all interviewing next week.

Shock and excitement here tonight. DD got an early, unexpected acceptance to her first choice college in the US. Being the US it is an unconditional acceptance rather than an offer. Takes the pressure off waiting for a decision from Oxford.

chopc · 13/12/2020 23:26

That's amazing @ChimneyPot ! Congratulations to her. How will she decide between the US Uni and Oxford?

ChimneyPot · 13/12/2020 23:34

I don’t know.
If it were an option I would much rather she was in Oxford but we can have those discussions if she is lucky enough to get an Oxford offer.

Summer15coming · 14/12/2020 00:34

Congratulations to @Chocomel and @ChimneyPot's DCs! Great news.

Chocomel · 14/12/2020 06:43

@ChimneyPot - wonderful news. Congratulations to her. When is the deadline for the reply to her US offer?

SATSmadness · 14/12/2020 07:25

Wow @ChimneyPot

Fantastic news. How does the US college thing work , is it one pf those fully funded scholarships ?

WarmAndco3y · 14/12/2020 08:25

@ChimneyPot , that’s excellent news, well done to your DD. Is she doing A’levels or IB?

@Chocomel, great news!

IrmaFayLear · 14/12/2020 08:33

Gosh, that’s exciting, ChimneyPot. I’d love to have gone to a New England college and worn kilts and a scarf and woolly hat (Ally McGraw-style)...

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/12/2020 09:12

Wow well done to your dd @ChimneyPot how exciting!

Revengeofthepangolins · 14/12/2020 09:32

Congrats to little chimney.

The timing of US early application results is very kind isn’t it - just before Christmas and a huge pressure lift (within reason and subject to character clauses - they do invoke those sometimes so no stupidity on social media ) for A level results.

A chum’s DC who is also applying for Oxford for the same subject as DS1 has likewise just got an American yes, and I suspect a key early pleasure was realising that he didn’t have to finish his five other incomplete US applications - no more “how would you describe yourself to your new room mate” or “tell us about an event that shaped your characters” essays to churn out!

I do wonder how American schools keep order towards the end of spring once lots of people (I am thinking boys here) have their offers so are no longer pursuing grades.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/12/2020 10:19

@Revengeofthepangolins taking my knowledge from a reliable source (Judy Blume books I read in the 80s Grin), it's very difficult for students to focus in the last few months of the year. They just mark time till Graduation!

LaundryFairy · 14/12/2020 10:39

@BigWoollyJumpers - DS got his second interview offer directly from the different college that will be interviewing him.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/12/2020 10:55

Anyone else waiting to hear today if they have been reallocated?

Dd's Oxford college said she would be informed today. If we don't hear anything it's either a yes or a no. Seems like a long wait till 12th Jan!

BigWoollyJumpers · 14/12/2020 11:25

No further emails for DD - so that's it until January, and breathe!

BigWoollyJumpers · 14/12/2020 11:31

Meant to add - a further good luck to all others with first/second/third interviews this week. Let us know how DC's get on, and then we can all settle down for xmas Grin.

All going on in the WoollyJumpers house today. DD now on holiday, downstairs loo being redone, finally gave up trying to hold everything together with string, and BigWoolly thinks she has a broken little toe having caught it on a doorframe yesterday, bloody hurts! Get's me out of shopping though Grin.

Stitchintimesaves9 · 14/12/2020 11:34

It was pretty stressful waiting for the decision about a second interview! Even after the deadline passed I wasn’t convinced that was it! But DD not heard anything and deadline was last Thursday, so I guess that’s it.

Summer15coming · 14/12/2020 11:42

DD's first interview in 20 minutes. She's like a cat on a hot tin roof. She's just done a 'dance warm up' (kitchen bop) which has helped a little! She barely slept though, fell asleep at 5am. Hope tonight is better as she has two tomorrow!

WarmAndco3y · 14/12/2020 11:58

Big hugs to your DD @Summer15coming

Wishing everyone with interviews today, the very best.

ChimneyPot · 14/12/2020 12:03

Thanks for the good wishes.
To answer some questions.
No it is not a full scholarship. That have a very generous means tested financial aid package. It will still cost us substantially more than Oxford would but manageable.

She has plenty of time to decide. There is a small deposit due next May.
She is doing Irish Leaving Cert not A levels or IB. This offer was based on a transcript of all her school grades for the last 4 years, an ACT test, essays and an interview.
And she is delighted not to have to finish the 12 US college applications she was going to do over Christmas. There is one she thinks she might still finish and send in as it would have been her joint favourite.

I would prefer her to go to Oxford but she says isn’t even going to think about which she would chose unless Oxford actually give her an offer which is statistically unlikely. If she is in the position of having to chose she will be very fortunate.

Good luck to all still interviewing or waiting to find out about extra interviews.

Vargas · 14/12/2020 12:30

Wishing everyone good luck this week!

Including DS' mate who is doing an Engineering interview at O tomorrow. Crossing all fingers and toes.

Revengeofthepangolins · 14/12/2020 12:33

Twenty minutes before deadline DS got an interview call for a second college, for history. Here we go again

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/12/2020 13:00

I haven't heard anything from dd about reallocation so I suppose that's it for us too until January.

Unless she's playing her 'I waited to tell you in person' trick! I have no idea what time the deadline is, just that it's today.

@Summer15coming good luck to your dd and hope she manages to sleep better tonight.

Well done to your ds @Revengeofthepangolins when's the interview? Is he happy with the college?

SATSmadness · 14/12/2020 13:40

@ChimneyPot

We didn't look into the USA option even though school actually held a presentation about it as part of the "Thinking of an early entry application ?" evening session, which seems soo long ago now. DD decided she wanted to go ahead with Medicine, which she was told wasn't really an option for USA scholarships to be applicable and then she added Oxbridge in to the situation too.

Hats off to your DD, who must be a star to get an unconditional place with her first application. Hooray for her not now having to plough on with all the others unless she fancies it.

DD interviewing this week and things are getting tense.

Once it's done, it's done, nothing more can be achieved by worrying about the outcome so hopefully we can all relax a little over the Christmas break which looks like it might arrive sooner than planned for many of our DC.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/12/2020 13:49

Well a turn up for the books here. Dd has just messaged me to say she has been reallocated to another college and has 2 interviews tomorrow!

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/12/2020 13:50

I asked her about the new college, she said it's a bit further out of town (bad) but has a feminist background (good)!
