Quite Jano69. A handful. Exactly my point. The national statistics show how rare straight 9s are and while those students will overwhelmingly be concentrated in particular schools, there's not a single school in the country where 'nearly all' students get straight 9s.

I'm aware I'm being very precise, but quest1on did say nearly all/ straight 9s. And that's wrong.

Anyhow, hurry up those History people in Oxford!

quest1on · 01/12/2020 12:19

Sure, but if they’re getting 85% 9 grades then a majority of students are coming out with straight 9s and some may have the odd 8. Last year SPGS got 87% 9s, 97% 9-8 and 100% 9-7. But even in a year with exams and no CAGs, the results are very similar. People seem to have heard about SPGS which is why I bring that one up, but there’s lots of schools where the results aren’t a million miles away, through I can only speak for London.

Revengeofthepangolins You have put us to shame. We thought we were being adventurous this year by stringing a few extra lights up a fir tree.

In other random news, Waitrose have sold out of turkeys and xmas desserts - first world problem I know, but I had a slot for ages, but not filled the basket yet..... now nothing to fill the basket with - Sad. Bloody hell.

@AFingerofFudge

Not Maths, but Engineering Science. Seems to me that Maths, Physics and Engineering seem to be among the last to appear at the moment, but they are starting to trickle out now. Have you seen the spreadsheet on The Student Room that students are updating when they get an invite (or rejection)?

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12mmjGO_emQL6K_yBnjrAwgyFLha9ZV4NH1H2C4fANgE/htmlview?pru=AAABdj30Z7k*vj3VYSfJH4aDrIN5_VjSVA

"Straight 9s" covers a range of achievements really.

Some schools have their pupils take less GCSEs so straight 9s can mean 9 (or possibly 8 ?).

Some schools push their top students to take 10+ GCSEs and there's a table somewhere showing the student numbers achieving 9s in 10/11/12/13 GSCEs. They numbers are naturally fairly low for 13 grade 9s.

Our school suggested my youngest commence GCSE courses towards ending up taking 13. We've settled on less as I know my dc and that's just too many for them to spread their time across and would mean sacrificing extra curricular stuff at some point.

goodbyestranger · 01/12/2020 12:26

quest1on it's a niche interest I know, so I'll be quiet after this (and puddings already sold out? Shock) but in fact the SPGS results are slightly muddied by the fact of having clocked them up doing a whole raft of IGCSEs, but this is not the thread to go into that. Anyhow, all a bit purist (on my part)!

LaundryFairy · 01/12/2020 12:31

Just catching up - fingers crossed for you Bend and Pangolins ! Surely you should hear soon.

pourmeanotherglass · 01/12/2020 12:34

@AFingerofFudge DD is still waiting for Maths and Philosophy at Worcester.

quest1on · 01/12/2020 12:35

Also in Waitrose at the mo and half the fridges are closed.

Anyway, as far as GCSEs go, I’ve one down three to go and the tricky one is next summer...

SATSmadness · 01/12/2020 12:49

TES Aug'19

"New GCSE grading system
It is higher than the legacy A* grade, and is only awarded to the top 20 per cent of those achieving grade 7/A and above.

According to figures released today, of the 837 students who achieved straight grade 9s this year, 556 – 66.4 per cent – were girls, and 281 – 33.6 per cent – were boys.

That means a higher proportion of clean sweep successes were girls this year – in 2018, the figure was 62 per cent.

The number of students with straight 9s in 12 subjects has doubled this year to 10."

sandybayley · 01/12/2020 12:51

To be clear 85% 9s doesn't mean 85% of girls got straight 9s at SPGS. Straight 9s in the London selective independents do happen but in DD's year of about 100 there were 6 girls I think. Plenty of 9s and 8s scattered throughout the year but not many with a clean sweep and certainly not the majority.

Revengeofthepangolins · 01/12/2020 12:53

@Baaaahhhhh Many thanks - a quality tip. Have leapt onto Waitrose and ordered my goose. Loads of pick up times available, but I agree, very little to buy. Luckily we have niche tastes for Christmas roasts.

Sorry, back on the rails now.

AFingerofFudge · 01/12/2020 13:22

Thanks @kitnkaboodle I will look at the Student room.

Majaso12 · 01/12/2020 13:26

My dd heard from her college last Tuesday and then Thursday said they’d be in touch with her interview times as soon as timetabling has been completed. Thought she’d hear something yesterday as interviews for her subject starts on the 7th. Still nothing. It doesn’t mention anything about another college interviewing her, just that they’ll be in contact with exact interview times. Not sure if she should have heard from another college by now if she’s having 2 interviews which she should be.

ChimneyPot · 01/12/2020 13:52

I put 2500 fairy lights in the back garden at the weekend. I could be tempted to 7000 though.

DD has her interview times.
She realised last night that she had received an email from the college she was reallocated to back on Thursday but had thought it was spam and hadn’t read it! Thankfully she wasn’t too late to accept.
It was only when she hadn’t received anything by yesterday that she did a search by the college name and found it.

She had registered at an open day for US colleges in Europe a while back and has been getting vast amounts of college related spam since then but she will be checking it more carefully and frequently in future!

Revengeofthepangolins · 01/12/2020 14:06

@ChimneyPot Phew!

olliepolly · 01/12/2020 15:08

Oxford physics is what we are waiting for .

quest1on · 01/12/2020 15:54

Hope today brings some good news to those still waiting.

Is there anyone on here with DC who have also applied to LSE, or who might know when they start to send offers?

CeliaCanth · 01/12/2020 16:04

DS has his interview times for law at Peterhouse...Monday 14 December. Offers will be sent out on 25 January according to the blurb.

bendmeoverbackwards · 01/12/2020 16:47

Finally good news!

Dd has an interview, she is over the moon. But I could have killed her. All the while I was stressing on here, refreshing the spreadsheet etc....she received her email around 10am this morning but didn't tell us because she wanted to 'tell us in person' when she got home!

Good luck to everyone else still waiting, fingers crossed.

SATSmadness · 01/12/2020 16:52

Congrats to your DD @bendmeoverbackwards

You're now out of the running for the longest wait crown.

quest1on · 01/12/2020 16:53

Congratulations bend’s DD!

bendmeoverbackwards · 01/12/2020 16:54

Thank you. Of course this has made dd even more keen to get a place even though I know it's still very tough from here on.

Baaaahhhhh · 01/12/2020 16:58

bendmeoverbackwards That's such good news. You obviously hadn't properly explained that you needed to update your MN friends!

Pumpkintopf · 01/12/2020 16:59
