Either way, exciting - and a big old confidence boost ahead of the Oxford interview.

Tenpastseven · 21/11/2020 09:14

Morning all. Congrats to @Jano69 and @Summer15coming on the Durham offers.

No word from UCL here either.

DS’s friend got an interview for Law (is there an a international Law degree? In which case it’s that one) for Oxford yesterday.

DS has decided he’d better start practicing for his at interview assessment even though he hasn’t heard if he’ll be invited to sit it.

Jalfrezi · 21/11/2020 09:55

Fab news on all the offers/interviews and many many congratulations 👏. It's all getting very exciting. But OMG - a history offer from Durham!!! I almost want to go wake up my DD and make her check too but then she really would think I was beyond weird 😆.

summerlovinn · 21/11/2020 10:55

Well done on the Durham offers! Very impressive (and a relief!) to get them this early. DD’s subject have announced that they’ve shortlisted and are in the process of timetabling everyone in, we will hear next week- ahhhh! She had a mock interview/session recently and DD asked if school would help with tablet/stylus provision;they was surprisingly cagey, even though all the teachers use iPads and the school bought ~60 webcams so that all the medics could do the BMAT proctoredConfused

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/11/2020 11:21

@Jano69 well done to your dd, great news! We are also waiting for Durham here (Ancient and Modern History), dd was sure she would have to wait till January. Hopefully it will be soon.

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/11/2020 11:25

@quest1on

What seems odd to me about London uni accommodation is these “multi collegiate halls.” There’s a huge one (can’t remember what it’s called but I think it’s on Russell Square). So you could be, for instance, a medic from Imperial, sharing with a load of economists from LSE? Is that how it works? Or do different unis have their own sections? Also there’s that huge glass orb building near London Bridge with beautiful rooms and absolutely amazing views - but his much does that cost? It looks like executive accommodation!
I was at an intercollegiate hall in the early 90s. Everyone was mixed so I met people from all over the place! My hall was called Hughes Parry (nicknamed Huge Party!) and it was in Cartright Gardens just off the Euston Road. 10 min walk to my department and it was fully catered which was nice after a tiring day.

This is making me nostalgic!

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/11/2020 11:26

@chopc where did you live when you were at UCL?

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/11/2020 11:28

Ahh the memories are coming back now. We would all watch Neighbours and Home and Away in the TV room (!) then go down for dinner at 6pm. Happy days Smile

Pumpkintopf · 21/11/2020 11:29

@Jano69 and @Summer15coming brilliant news for both your dc, congratulations!

DahliaMacNamara · 21/11/2020 11:29

A friend of DD's has had an invitation to interview for Cambridge. Not sure which subject but it'll be on the maths-y side. Possibly computer science? DD herself has suddenly had a crisis of confidence about her own (Oxford) interview prospects, so it's a great comfort to have some good offers in the bag at this stage. She hasn't had a chance to fall seriously in love with any particular place, so it's only her competitive streak that's getting a battering for now. Only!

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/11/2020 11:30

@321zyx waiting for Durham here too. Good luck to your ds, it's horrible waiting isn't it?

Summer15coming · 21/11/2020 11:42

Thanks for the messages, everyone!

What's interesting is that my DD's letter tells her that her college will be confirmed in February. I'm not sure if that's the case with others? Certainly, many moons ago (so maybe not relevant), my college was confirmed at the time of offer, and the same with my son more recently. I'm guessing it's just because of the timing of the offer, but things do seem to be different all round this year...

mikeandike · 21/11/2020 11:55

@Summer15coming DD received a Durham offer for Law on Tuesday and her email also says that college allocation will take place in Feb.

Beetlesand · 21/11/2020 12:51

Dc’s Chemistry offer from Durham also stated that college allocation would be Feb

chopc · 21/11/2020 13:53

@bendmeoverbackwards I stayed a mixture of university accommodations, private hostel, private rental in Kings Cross

chopc · 21/11/2020 13:54

The difficulty was as most of my friends were in London they didn't want to live outside walking distance but didn't have to budget to stay within walking distance. So it was indeed a challenge to find group accommodation

Hoghgyni · 21/11/2020 14:14

The Durham College allocations are by a system involving a ballot. There is no guarantee that you will receive anything close to your College request or you may strike it lucky. Last year DD requested catered and was given self catered, despite being in the first batch allocated. You have absolutely no guarantee of receiving your allocated college if taking up an insurance place either.

Summer15coming · 21/11/2020 15:56

That's good to know, @mikeandike @Beetlesand And congratulations to your DCs on their offers!

Your link made interesting reading, @Hoghgyni

RunnersTipple · 21/11/2020 19:35

DS just got interview date through for Manchester (physics). Was not expecting that on a Saturday night!

DeRigueurMortis · 21/11/2020 22:27

@RunnersTipple many Congratulations 🥳

Chocomel · 21/11/2020 22:53

I've just found this thread. Hello everyone.

Quick question - has anyone heard of Oxford interview invitations being issued yet? DS submitted his written work on with the 10th Nov deadline and we've not heard anything back yet. Online interviews are potentially 7th or 8th if December....

Pumpkintopf · 22/11/2020 00:17

That's great @RunnersTipple - agree it's strange timing on a Saturday night, they're obviously working hard to get these out!

IrmaFayLear · 22/11/2020 09:22

It depends on the subject and college, Chocomel. I believe some Law invitations have been trickling out, but most invitations will probably be at the end of this coming week or possibly early the next. Also those subjects with an entrance test to mark (eg English, History) always bring up the rear.

This may be a load of rubbish for this year - just basing it on ds’s past experience; he received an interview invite on the 28th Nov I think.

Chocomel · 22/11/2020 09:53

@IrmaFayLear thanks for the reply. It's appreciated. I think I'm stressing because DS has put all his eggs in the Oxford basket. He's the last one to go off to uni and I really hope he gets an interview. X

Knotanothername · 22/11/2020 10:25

Congratulations everyone on the interviews:)
DS went through this last year and his interview confirmation was 27th Nov . But some were later still, it seems very college dependent.
